UK shoppers try to hunt down Wii Fit for this holiday

Online analyst Hitwise is reporting that folks in the UK who're searching online for the perfect gift are searching for Wii Fit. With Reggie saying there won't be that many on store shelves, we can't blame them for heading online to try and track one down for the holidays. As you can see, the second item that UK shoppers seek is the Wii. Two years in and it's still going strong. We're expecting North Americans are searching for the same two items right about now.

Are any of you trying to pick up Wii Fit or the Wii this holiday? Is it a gift for a friend, loved one, family member, or yourself?

EA posts profits loss, cuts jobs

It's no secret that EA has their hands in some interesting projects coming down the pipe. Skate It, Rock Band 2, and that horror game we're waiting for are just a few that immediately come to mind. Whether these will be a big success for the company or not, we will have to wait and see (well, you can pretty much guess the second game in that brief list will make them a bunch of cash).

They could use some success, though. The company is apparently at a loss for profits, as they're down during Q2 of this year, forcing the company to cut some jobs. Around 500 to 600 across all functions and locations, to be exact, as the company posted a loss of $310 million during Q2.

"Considering the slowdown at retail we've seen in October, we are cautious in the short term," said John Riccitiello. "Longer term, we are very bullish on the game sector overall and on EA in particular."

Reggie: 3 in 10 stores will have Wii Fit this holiday season, Wii console production up

Reggie recently sat down with the LA Times to discuss the Wii and the upcoming holiday shopping season. He says that about 3 in 10 stores will be carrying the Wii Fit bundle. For those of you still trying to track down the fitness package, those aren't the best odds.

As for production of Wii consoles, Reggie says that Nintendo is churning out 2.4 million units a month. Compared to 1.6 million last year, Nintendo is really trying their best to satisfy the demand consumers have for the console. Whether they actually will or not, we'll just have to wait and see.

Strong Yen could see lack of Wii bargains this holiday season in U.S.

Analysts think that due to the continuing decline of the U.S. dollar and the 13-year high for the Japanese Yen, you won't be seeing too many hot deals on Nintendo's Wii this holiday season. With the Yen being so high, it drives up the cost of Japanese goods for U.S. retailers. And, seeing as how the U.S. economy has been in such bad shape all year, merchants have discounted their goods to offset that fall to a point where they can't afford to lower prices to attract customers any more.

Wii Fit, one of the items analysts see as being a must-have this season, could be most affected. With the profit margin on it so small (same goes for the Wii console itself), retailers can't afford to cut prices. One positive thing to come out of this, however, is that the Euro has been on a decline, as well. This means that Nintendo should be shipping more to the U.S., whereas in the past, Nintendo focused on Europe first.

Wii Warm Up: Holiday wishes

Some among you may be gearing up for the holiday season, and even though no one has any damn money (thank you, catastrophic global economy), that's never stopped us from asking for things before. This year, it may be more hoping than expecting, but by golly, we're gonna ask for things. It never hurts to try.

Which leads us to ask: what's on your holiday wish list so far? Is there enough coming out to keep you satisfied, or will you be turning to other systems to get your game on?

Gamestop CEO: Wii shortages have no 'end in sight'

GameDaily recently sat down with GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo to discuss, well, things that a CEO of a huge company would discuss. What is of note to us Wii enthusiasts, however, is his grim outlook for the future. He doesn't see store shelves stocked full of Wii consoles anytime soon, unfortunately. "I don't see a near-term end in sight for Wii shortages, not unless they really ramp up supply," DeMatteo said. "I think they've ramped it up 20 percent or so, but Nintendo is fairly cautious by nature. They ramped it up 20 and it's still evaporating."

This is only one man's opinion, but based on how much money he probably makes each year, we're sure his estimate is better than ours. So, for you holiday shoppers that have someone on your list asking for Wii, better get to hunting one down now. In little over a month, we're sure they're going to be a lot harder to track down.

Top 5: Games for your Day Off

Gaming is a hobby, but sometimes it can feel like a job. As developers try to boost replayability, your gaming commitments can become anxiety-inducing. Just ask anyone who dared to attempt achieving 100% of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. At first, it's a fun and wonderful romp through a vivid world that's just oozing with life and character. By the end, you wish you'd never left Vice City. Did anyone here complete all of Super Smash Bros Brawl? I'm talking Classic Mode with every character, all of the Event matches, the target smashes, and every trophy and sticker available. At a certain point, some games can become an obligation rather than a means to entertainment.

Today being Labor Day in the US, let's take a break from completing every mission, collecting every star, and unlocking all bonus content. Sometime between your 11 AM rise from bed and your evening consumption of copious amounts of hot dogs at your family barbeque, take some time to truly enjoy gaming. Here's our Top 5 recommendations.

Iwata: Keep dreaming of a white console Christmas

Whether or not you've been able to find Wiis in stores as of late, the holiday season is a completely different beast. Even now, in July, company president Satoru Iwata can't promise that there will be enough Wiis stocked to meet demand this Christmastime. If Wiis are scarce, this will be the third holiday season in a row that people in the U.S. and UK have had difficulty locating the console.

Iwata promises that the company is doing everything in its power to avoid this situation, and is on schedule to develop 2.4 million units for 2008 by the end of the year.

We can imagine only that some other Nintendo stock (we're looking at you, Wii Fit) will be a nightmare to find this holiday season, too.

[Thanks, Thomas!]

Happy 4th from Wii Fanboy!

For those of us in the United States (a majority of our staff), today is Independence Day. We won't go telling you everything about the holiday, because the internet makes it easy to track down information for yourself. But, we will say that it's one of our biggest holidays, so expect us to be taking it kind of easy around here today.

We'll have posts lined up for you all throughout the day, but the space between them will be wider. So, if you find yourself in front of the computer today, check us out periodically, as we'll still have some great content for you. For those of you in the United States, have a great 4th. For the rest of the world, we hope you enjoy your day. Thanks for reading!

Mii Jesus advertises for Easter services

The Mii. At the rate it's going, we're sure it'll be Time's Person of the Year or something soon. And the church is starting to get that popularity, apparently, as a Jesus Mii is being used to advertise Easter Sunday services for the Mission Bay Community Church.

The church itself is located in the San Francisco area and, to our knowledge, the first of its kind to actually be hip to what the kids think is, well ... hip. Kudos to the church on finding a smart way to advertise their services.

For all of you celebrating Easter today, we hope you have a safe and happy holiday.

NiGHTS: Holidays of Dreams

While there's (currently) no Christmas-related expansion like there was on the Saturn, Sonic Team still managed to sneak some seasonal content into NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. No doubt some of you have figured this out already, as holidays have happened since the game's release. But new NiGHTS players or those who don't mess around in the "My Dream" mode won't have seen any of it yet!

There's a special celebration of some kind in My Dream every single month. The Nightopians shoot fireworks all day on New Year's Day. In July, they don bullfighting gear for the Running of the Bulls. You can access this content in the manner of a cheating jerk by disconnecting from the Internet and changing the system's date, or you can wait like a decent human being.

Wii Fanboy Poll: Are you and the family playing Wii today?

With today being a holiday, we wondered if you were bringing the Wii into the mix? The strategic thing would be to bust out the console and get your game on before stuffing yourself with mashed potatoes, turkey and cranberry sauce, though. We would never dare tell you how to live. But, that is if you in fact plan on actually playing the console with family and friends.

Are you and the family playing Wii today?

Happy Turkey Day from Wii Fanboy

To most of our readers, today is the holiday where buttons suddenly go missing and bellies expand to proportions only seen once a year. It's a day of turkey and pie and gathering with family and friends. If you're the fan of some crummy football team, it's also a day of sports. It's a day to reflect on what you're thankful for and to relax.

So, that's what we're doing. We'll be posting today, but at a limited capacity (we have families, too!). If you find yourself near a computer, stick around and check us out today, but be sure to give your family the time of day, also. Or, better yet, share the blog with them. They want to know what's going on in your life, anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving from Wii Fanboy and, as always, thanks for reading! We really appreciate it.

Wii Warm Up: Shortages

Nearly a year into the release of the Wii, the shortages continue. Some areas enjoyed a little short-lived respite, but with the holidays around the corner, it seems that once again -- for a variety of possible reasons -- getting your hands on a Wii is about as common as spying a leprechaun in the wild.

As a Nintendo fan, does the continued demand for the console surprise you? Certainly, during the holidays, it makes sense; during November and December, it can be difficult to find a toothpick, much less a hot commodity, but it's not like this is new. Did you expect things might taper off a little? Nintendo seemed to expect it, even if you didn't, at least now that we've all gotten over the initial shock that came with everyone demanding a Wii.

Gift services go live worldwide for holidays

Sure, maybe a lot of you don't find the idea itself terribly exciting, but we are definitely pleased to hear that the Wii Shop Channel's new gift feature will be live worldwide in time for the holidays. Now you'll be able to gift friends with awesome old games without having to track them down in physical form -- and without unloading a lot of cash, either. That's a win all around.

It might also be worth noting that Gamefront's headline on the announcement had the "Wii Gift Channel" in English, and since "das Gift" means "poison" in German, Google's autotranslator informed us that the Wii Poison Channel would be a go in December. We're not quite as excited about that one, frankly.
