Swords & Soldiers & Stick Figures

If Swords & Soldiers, the side-scrolling WiiWare RTS by Ronimo Games, didn't already have such an excellent style, we'd be calling for them to switch to the look used in this video explaining how the game works. But would that hew too closely to Defend Your Castle's DIY look?

As for the gameplay itself, it looks delightfully simple. You send soldiers and other units from your castle on one side of the screen to your opponent's castle on the other side, and they do their thing. Workers gather gold from the enemy castle, warriors hack up dudes with their axes, and so on. Rather than sitting helpless as your soldiers are mauled, you'll have access to spells, which you aim with the pointer.

Maybe we can compromise and convince Ronimo to keep the voice acting from this video.

An original RTS on Wii? It's Swords & Soldiers!

Click for the first screens

We don't want to go jumping the gun on this one, but if there's a title that could come anywhere near rivaling the excitement we have for another WiiWare title, Mega Man 9, then this is it. Developed by the students that created de Blob (the original, not the still-awesome-looking THQ game set to release on Wii), Swords & Soldiers is "a sidescrolling real time strategy game." It features three different factions, all "battling for the powers of the gods." The game will be comprised of a single-player campaign mode, as well as support for a splitscreen multiplayer mode (local only, though). It's also promised to include "several other game modes."

Look for Swords & Soldiers to hit WiiWare in all regions during Q4 of this year. Be sure to check out the first screens in our gallery below. The artistic style is amazing.

E308: This trailer tells the Little King's Story

We were sorely disappointed when we couldn't get our hands on Little King's Story, but Marvelous and XSEED managed to make up for it a little bit with this enchanting trailer. We just can't help but be lured in by the game's style -- check out the knight using a cow as a mount, for example.

It's too bad that we couldn't find out if the gameplay matched the rest of this title's charm, but them's the breaks. Either way, we're looking forward to trying out Little King's Story in the future.

Real-time strategy -- you know, for kids

We're often critical of some of the children's games released on the Wii (one reason being, perhaps, that we're not the target market, but mostly because just how many pet sims do we really need for one console?). Crave seems to be taking a different route this time, though -- one that we can actually respect -- by coming out with Defendin' De Penguin, a real-time strategy game for kids. You can see this idea realized in the trailer above.

In the title, you are trying to protect a penguin village from wolves and other vicious animals who keep eating the town's fish supply. The focus on cute penguins and (we assume) the difficulty are what makes this game "kiddie," but we still like the idea of a niche genre being developed for children. Considering that vein of thought, what other uncommon genres do you think should be made into kids game? Of course, we might like to see a few more RTS games geared toward us on the Wii, too, if that's not too much to ask.

As for Defendin' De Penguin, it releases later this month for both the Wii and DS.

Defendin' de Penguin would be easier with a gun

Everyone was quick to point out that the Wiimote might just do a reasonable job taking over from a mouse in real-time strategy games. Ditch those PCs if you must, but this latest announcement won't satisfy the hardcore C&C and Starcraft junkies.

Defendin' de Penguin
is an RTS geared towards gamers twelve and under. The hero is Little Blue, and you move his tiny penguin hide all over the icy landscape to go fishing and upgrade "towers." Exactly what these towers are remains to be seen, but we know you have to defend them from hungry invaders. Okay, so it won't be the deepest RTS ever made, but it might just fill a gap in the Wii library ... right?

Virtually Overlooked: North and South

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.

After exploring the offensive Spanish for Everyone over at DS Fanboy, we wracked our brains trying to think of another game that failed to adhere to the politically correct school of thought. The first title that came to mind was North and South, and if you've ever played this game, you'll probably understand why.

This 1989 NES (among others) game is a bit of an oddity. Not only was it one of the first real-time strategy titles in the industry, but it also included two platformer minigames that were all kinds of excellent.

Aside from its genre mixing, though, you're probably wondering what was so controversial about this title. To explain that, we might have to give you a brief history lesson first.

Project O teaser site launches

Marvelous Interactive, Townfactory, and CING recently announced that they had joined their development forces in hopes of producing a new game for the Wii titled Project O. Not much else was revealed except for a vague release date of sometime in 2008, but hearing that Hotel Dusk: Room 215 developers CING are involved was enough to hold our interest.

We didn't have to wait long for more hints on what the game could be, as Marvelous Interactive has already uploaded a Project O teaser site for our analysis. The concept art shows what looks like resource gathering, structure building, multiple units engaged in combat, and an overhead shot. Could this mystery title be an RTS game? We will keep you informed as more news develops!
