Wii Fanswag: And the Dragon Quest Swords winner is ...
Well, folks, our latest giveaway has come to an end and it's time we hooked someone up with our review copy of Dragon Quest Swords. Many have entered, but only one can be crowned victorious. Let's all congratulate:
Gossipy Dragon Quest Swords screens
The latest batch of screens of Square Enix's rail-RPG Dragon Quest Swords focuses entirely on everyone's favorite part of any RPG: talking to townspeople. We don't know about you, but we were afraid the game would be all about swordfighting!
Sometimes we rush through the tedious boss fights and story progression so we can get back to town and hear the single, repeated piece of information from every citizen. We just want to hear all about their lives. It reinvigorates us for more hours of grinding right outside of town!

Chocobo's Mysterious Trailer
Square Enix has released a new video of the Wii version of Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, and it looks a lot like its predecessors, in a good way! This series has a long history, and it's nice to see that this looks like it's going to be a real Mysterious Dungeon game and not some kind of dungeon-themed party minigame fest.
The best part of the whole trailer is how cozy the town looks: the little chocobo is seen walking down cobblestone streets, surrounded by butterflies, napping on a dock, playing on a swing set, and even having a nice cup of coffee at a cafe. Of course, this all serves to make it seem more cruel and horrible when he's trapped in a lava-filled dungeon. We laughed.

Wii Warm Up: All new (to you)
All this week, we're celebrating retro goodness here at Wii Fanboy -- call it an extension of Virtually Overlooked -- and we thought we'd start right here with a question that's perfect to ponder while you're having that morning coffee. With over 100 games now available on the Virtual Console, many of you have probably played something this time around that you never got around to before. As new experiences, how do these games hold up? Or are you unwilling to buy anything you didn't already love in a past life?So why is the ActRaiser box featured here? Because this blogger never played it back in the day, and after playing it now, pretty much considers the sixteen years without ActRaiser to be a mockery of life.
Square Enix mini game service
If the recent barrage of games from Square Enix hasn't sated your appetite for all things chocobo-related, you'll want to be signing up for Game Town, their new mini-game service. The site is currently in beta, with Japanese registration forms. Luckily, IGN has posted a guide on how to sign up with as little fuss as possible.
So far there's only a couple of chocobo games to play, but there are a whole bunch of 'coming soon' slots just waiting to be filled. We reckon there's a good chance we'll be seeing mini-games based on new Square Enix titles showing up here over the next few weeks.

FFCC: The Crystal Bearers trailer finally revealed [update 1]
After weeks of teasing us with screen captures from its Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers trailer, Square Enix made the 55-second video public early this morning. Though a third of it is taken up by an animated, spinning crystal, the movie still manages to pack in plenty of airship shots, city scenes, and even a tender, tearful moment with the RPG's blonde-haired protagonist. Jump past the post break for the clip and some skydiving action.
[Update 1: We mixed up our Ring of Fates with our Crystal Bearers, citing this trailer as belonging to The Ring Bearers. How embarassing.]

All NEW blurry shots from FFCC: Crystal Bearers
Well, 66% new, at least -- but that's more than we had a mere week ago. The good folks at Square Enix seem to make us want to suffer. They're teasing us with glimpses of this strange new Final Fantasy, the game that's not quite in keeping with the franchise's glorious RPG tradition. But exactly what do they have in store for us? At this rate, we'll find out sometime in late 2010.
Just let go, guys. Give us the Crystal Bearers trailer and let us see it in action. That one teaser just wasn't enough!
A blurry peek at the Crystal Bearers
It's been a while since we've seen anything from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers, but this single image popped up this week in the Japanese media in the aftermath of the Square Enix Party, and it's got us dying for more. Alas, even in recent interviews, they're not saying much about this action-oriented RPG .... Thank goodness we have all kinds of Final Fantasy fun to look forward to on the DS as well, or we'd be burning with anticipation.
[Thanks for all the e-mails on this one!]
Dragon Quest Swords slashes its way into the news
Dragon Quest Swords made an appearance at the Square Enix Party over the weekend, and now the official website is updated with new trailers, screens, and wallpapers for your perusal. IGN's Craig Harris got some hands-on time with the demo, and he detailed the combat system (or rather, the portion in the demo) pretty extensively. Harris reports that combat is fun, but maybe a little too simple, and exaggerated moves translate more clearly to on-screen attacks than do simple flicks of the wrist. With two months to go until the game's release in Japan, some of that may change. Check out the brand new trailer after the jump for your own (visual) impressions.

Japanese Dragon Quest Swords boxart

When anything at all happens related to a Dragon Quest game, we pay attention. Therefore, we felt that the newly-released Japanese boxart for Dragon Quest Swords was worth posting. Take an early look at something that's going to be in pretty much every Japanese home after July 12th!
The boxart looks pretty nice, actually. We appreciate it when publishers put actual hand-drawn art on the cover instead of action poses of the main character's 3D model. Especially when it's Akira Toriyama art, which we continue to like despite Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Quest Swords makes with the new gameplay screenshots, details
Some new screenshots for Dragon Quest Swords were recently posted on Famitsu. There're some gameplay shots, a companion select screen and a few bits of in-game scenery. It looks like the Wiimote is going to be fully integrated into the game; what looks like a pointer can be seen in the battle shots. The article promises that the game will detect the sword strokes made by the player, with the direction of swing apparently matching the players action.
How well the first person swordplay works could well be the critical factor in the success of this game.
The game's 3 companions are also pictured, choose from soldier Dean, fatherly Boudo, or monk Seteia, who appears to have skipped on the brown cloth tunic and gone straight for the traditional pink bodice and leather wrist strap. We know who we'd choose.
Dragon Quest Swords is penciled in for a July 12 release (Japan).

Wii Warm Up: Will Wii get Star Ocean?
According to the latest Famitsu, a new Star Ocean will be announced at the upcoming Square Enix party, but beyond that, we don't know anything else -- including which platform will have the honor of the title. With the Square Enix-Nintendo romance of late, we wouldn't be too surprised to see Star Ocean venture Wii-ward, but we're not ready to call this one for our camp just yet. As much as we might hope for it, it seems likely SE will throw some sort of bone to the other guys. Then again, it's Nintendo that's collecting all the Dragon Quest love, and that's a pretty big deal. Perhaps Star Ocean could be a nice fit on the Wii. Where do you see it going?New screens from Dragon Quest Swords
While what we really want are closer impressions of the intriguing character designs, we'll take whatever screenshots we can get from Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, because we eat RPGs like sweet, sweet candy. Behind the jump, we have loads of screens for you -- check 'em out!As an aside ... wtf, isn't that bridge in Lufaise Meadows? It looks like a place we may have lain, all corpsified and angry.
Square Enix on the Virtual Console
Time for more guessing games -- Square Enix has confirmed that they will be supporting the Wii's Virtual Console, but they're not giving up the goods on what games we might see. The possibilities, considering their long and storied catalogue, are vast. But with their sudden penchant for remaking games for the GBA and the DS, we might not see some of the most beloved titles, like Final Fantasy VI. Perhaps we'll see Chrono Trigger, hailed by many as one of the best RPGs of all time. Anything else you'd like to see from Square Enix? Let us know!Wii Virtual Console partners
When Nintendo first announced the Virtual Console service, it seemed as though Nintendo themselves would be just about the only ones releasing their past games. Of course, Nintendo's library is beyond incredible, but with the exception of Sega and Hudson, it just seemed as though companies weren't going to be taking advantage of the service.(insert clichéd "tides have turned" line here) Nintendo has announced Virtual Console partnerships with twenty-four separate publishers, the full listing of which can be seen after the break. The big boys are all on-board: Square-Enix, Konami, Bandai-Namco. A few of the companies don't seem to have much of a legacy at all, however, which implies that they may be working on some smaller-scale original games for the VC service.
In addition, it appears that the Virtual Console will now be supporting the MSX (pictured above), an older arcade system. Iwata-san also expressed in interest to bring even more consoles to the Wii: we here at the Fanboy pray to the rings of Saturn.
(Fun fact! Did you know that video game mega-franchises Dragon Quest and Metal Gear first appeared on the MSX?)
