An elegant announcement for a more civilized age

This is yet another confirmation of what every gamer has been waiting for since the first time we saw the Wii controller. At the Hollywood & Games Summit, panel moderator N'Gai Croal asked LucasArts president Jim Ward about the possibility of a Wii lightsaber game.

Ward's response was very encouraging. "We're all over that, and internally we have already played a lightsaber game on the Wii. It's a lot of fun, and we'll get there." He went on to say that "some stuff" would be out this fall. Start practicing your blind Force-guided waggling now.

Mii Spotlight: The Force edition



A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, (or, last week in the Mii Spotlight) some pretenders rolled in here and tried to get everyone psyched about Star Trek. Please. We know what's better. We know that Star Wars is really where it's at -- especially when it comes to Miis. Does everyone have Spock on their Wii, ready to get his tennis on? We think not ... but there sure do seem to be a lot of Admiral Ackbars out there, ready to warn us of impending traps.

Star Wars game confirmed, lightsabers and all?

We'll call it "mostly confirmed," but according to this article on the Wii's financial success, George Lucas has said that a game that turns our trusty Wii remotes into lightsabers is on the horizon. Unfortunately, there's no quote to back up the assertion, so we remain partially skeptical, but it's one of those things that we just know is going to happen, whether we want it or not.

Anyone else just as interested, if not more so, in using the Wiimote and nunchuk for Force abilities in a Star Wars game? The upcoming sandbox-style Harry Potter includes motion controls that simply make us drool for similar applications in a Star Wars title ....

Fan cooks up Wii Star Wars simulation

Do you wile away the hours, dreaming of a Wii Star Wars game? Oh, the fun that could be had with your Wiimote lightsaber, swinging back and forth, stabbing and thrusting, and the beautiful sounds emanating from the controller. Maybe you don't spend Saturday afternoons that way, but one Go Nintendo reader did, and he decided to make his vision a reality ... or at least, a reality on YouTube. Unfortunately, we're without a Star Wars game at this time. Check out the fan-made notion of what could be after the jump.

Confirmed: lightsaber-on-lightsaber action for Wii

Oh yes, young padawan -- a LucasArts rep confirmed the development of a Star Wars game for Wii (and some other next-gen platforms, but who cares?). We were pretty sure this was coming (we figured someone at LucasArts had seen the Wiimote, after all), but it's always nice to be proven right.

The Wiire reports the good news breaking during a Q&A session at San Diego's Comic-Con, and the Wiimote was specifically mentioned, so it follows that the game will incorporate the controller in some sweet saber-swingin' action. Let's hope it's actually designed to work with the hypersensitive Wiimote and not just some lame patch they work up for Nintendo.

Now the real question is: will the Wiimote speaker churn out the zippy lightsaber sound effects? Anything less would be shenanigans.

EGM Rumor Mill: stolen support and Star Wars sabers

Obi Wii KenobiThe latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly has some interesting bits of information for us Wii fanatics. First, it seems as though several developers have actually turned from PS3 development over to the Wii, in reaction to Nintendo's strong E3 showing. Many appear to be frightened of the high cost of development and consumer price point of Sony's behemoth, and the Wii's familiar Gamecube-like architecture is surely a sight for sore programming eyes.

Secondly, LucasArts seem to have finally heard Nintendo fans' cries for a lightsaber game; word on the street is that they're already on their way with a new exclusive Star Wars game for the Wii, based heavily on lightsaber mechanics. Thank the Force.

Gaming professionals respond to Revo controller

My little green friend. In their Question of the Week feature, Gamasutra recently asked their audience what kinds of games would be most suited to the Revolution controller and which specific concepts they'd like to see using it in the future. The overall response?

"OMG the Lightsaberz0rz are teh rule!"

Not that there's anything wrong with prancing around the room and hacking off limbs with a beam of light, but we feel that the Revolution has a bit more potential than merely indulging us in our geeky Star Wars fantasies (though admittedly, that's an important feature of any console). Luckily, some of the other responses raised some more interesting issues.

"My big fear is that the Revolution is going to over-popularize shallow physical gaming such that everyone starts doing it and suddenly cooking simulators and orchestra-conducting games are going to be popping up on all formats," says Lionhead's impossibly named Tadhg Kelly. This is known as the Eyetoy phenomenon, where developers get stuck on gimmicky features and fail to take true advantage of the platform's capabilities. We have no doubt that several lazy developers will be satisfied with releasing shallow adventures in fishing, fly-swatting and carpentry--that's just the nature of this kind of technology. Fortunately, we won't be buying lame games like that. We'd rather go for intricate, first-person Harry Potter role-playing games.

"Imagine having to speak the spell you want to cast, and using different wand movements to create variations on the spell (maybe the closer you are to a 'correct' movement the more powerful it is, or maybe you can flick it in different directions to throw people about)." Ben Droste from Krome Studio sure makes a convincing pitch for the next Harry Potter film tie-in which, just like the previous entries, will be "the darkest one yet."

Finally, the prize for most spot-on comment goes to Johnnemann Nordhagen, who works for SCEA of all companies. "Trying to shoehorn existing genres into the controller concept is not the exciting part of the new system, although I don't doubt we'll see some excellent interpretations of things like RTS games. To me, the promise of the new controller is that it allows new types of games." If the Revolution hosts nothing but old genres with new controller schemes, it wouldn't exactly be living up to its namesake. The whole point of reinventing the controller is to allow for gameplay that couldn't possibly work on traditional controllers. You know, like lightsaber duels.
