Revolutionary: Playing. Creating? Sharing!

Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

Custom level creation in console games has come a long way. It used to be, if you wanted to share a track that you built in Excitebike, you had to invite friends over to play your creation on your cartridge, until you powered off your NES and the track was lost forever. Nowadays our levels can be saved to internal storage, and shared by removable media, or across the internet to survive for posterity.

It's a feature that's fully supported by all consoles this generation, and big games are highlighting it amongst their bullet points. System sellers like Halo 3, LittleBigPlanet, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are trojan-horsing the concept of custom level creation into the consciousness of the console-consuming collective. Former Sony exec Phil Harrison popularized the term "Game 3.0," but we'll be taking a look at how it is playing out on Nintendo's platform.

Dojo update: Meowth returns [update 1]

Skipping making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Meowth is returning in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. As you might expect, his attack deals with showering the battlefield in precious, precious gold coins.

For such a greedy little guy, it's somewhat odd that he'd choose to part with some of his fortune just to put the hurting on your enemies. But, at least he has the good greed to never part with that coin on his head.

Are we happy to see him returning to the field of battle?

Update: Turns out, there was another update at the dojo we overlooked. The controls for using the Wiimote are also explained.

Dojo update: Donkey Kong and a trailer

The Dojo has updated again, this time providing us with a complete bio of Donkey Kong, along with a short gameplay video. The video, which lasts a too-short 15 seconds, shows off some of the characters' Final Smash maneuvers, as well as some of the stages already revealed. The bio on Donkey Kong is .. well, the usual bio thing we've seen for many character already.

As usual, be sure to hit up our gallery below for some new images.

Dojo update: Bumper returns

The dojo has updated, yet again, revealing an item from the first Super Smash Bros. game making its return. We recall many an occasion where the item was situated at the edge of a level, prohibiting us from getting back onto said level after we had been knocked far, far away. It's a pretty good weapon, we think, so we're glad to see its return.

Check out some images of it in action in our gallery below.

New E3 to not have playable Smash Bros. on display

According to the fine folks over at Game | Life, next week's E3 is going to be disappointing to fans of those brothers who make with the super smashing. Why? No playable version of the game will be available at the show. And, as much as we'd like to, we'll refrain from quoting that line about voices crying out and being suddenly silenced.

The Nintendo representative that confirmed all of this to Game | Life said that due to the nature of the new E3, Nintendo decided to go with a smaller roster of games. With several new titles that we've never seen before likely to pop up at the show, Nintendo undoubtedly wants to keep the focus on them. Can't blame them, but with Smash Bros. being the high-profile title it is, we can't say we would've made the same decision.

Dojo update: Zelda bio

It's been a long weekend, void of no new information regarding one of the three biggest titles to hit the Wii this year. As we come back to work, it's nice to see the Dojo has updated us with a new character bio. Aside from her updated design, nothing particularly new is revealed, but at least we have new screens to gawk at.

You can check them out in the gallery below.

Dojo update: Lylat Cruise stage revealed

While battling atop space ships in the Lylat system is nothing new to the Smash Bros. franchise, the revised stage looks a lot better. Now, the ship warps to different sectors, making its way through epic space battles and even the atmosphere of Corneria. Heck, maybe we won't be battling exclusively in Hyrule anymore, with such a promising looking stage as this.

Check out all of the new Lylat Cruise stage images in the gallery below.

Smash Bros. update: Fall recovery tactics

The Dojo updates yet again, this time highlighting fall recovery tactics in the game. We all know the drill, someone hits you with the baseball bat or maybe Samus blasts you with a charged shot from her arm cannon and you go flying off the side of the stage and you have to try to get back. So you perform your mid-air jump, followed by your Up special move to get back. Nothing new, right? Well, at least we get some more images of in-game action.

Wii Warm Up: SMAAAASH!

We've got a very simple question for you today: who's your favorite existing Super Smash Bros. character? Is it Ness, or one of the many inferior filler characters they put in so everyone wouldn't just pick Ness?

Wii Warm Up: The slow reveal of Smash Bros.

After a ton of buildup, the Super Smash Bros. Brawl website began updating this week, which is exciting in principle. The actual content of the updates, however ... well, let's just say we had already guessed that Mario and Link will be in the game. Today we get a small amount of news about a new item-- a Gooey Bomb that sticks to opponents.

The whole development cycle has been like this-- we've gotten very little information of any kind about this game except what we already know (for example, the rules of Smash Bros.) It's kind of a tease. Of course, this just serves to build up anticipation of the final product.

Would you rather get a huge blowout of info all at once, or do you enjoy letting the excitement build as you're fed tiny little morsels of information one by one? If you don't feel like talking about that, we suppose we could talk about the Gooey Bomb. One warning, though-- we've heard enough about banning items from "serious play" for one lifetime.

Super Gumby Bros. Brawl trailer

They haven't yet invented a number that accurately estimates how many times we've watched the Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer that debuted at last year's E3 event. 15 bazillion? 32 robillion? 299 karmakarmakarmakarmakarma-chamelion? Nay, these numbers do not even begin to scratch the surface!

Sgsugar's claymation remake of the trailer is more of a homemade project than a high-value production, but its stop-motion action is no less awesome. The misshapen models, amateurish sets, and inconsistent lighting only serve to increase the video's plasticine charm.

Solid Snake's absence is disappointing but easily forgotten when the two-minute clip is filled with scenes like Pit firing an oversized arrow from his malformed bow or Wario's flatulent send-off. Jump past the post break for Sgsugar's clay-animated adaptation and Nintendo's original Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets hand-drawn and hilarious

This fan-made video, which is available past the post break per our aggreement, is ... well .... it's just ... we're really having a hard time finding some adjectives to use. We like the video, don't get us wrong, it's good. It's just that, really, it's a sensory overload. All of the mental stimulation it provides, as well as the humor found within, make a potent cocktail. It's causing us to feel awfully inebriated ...

We will comment, however, that Shin Akuma would NEVAR lose to Pokemon in a fight.
