Apple comes up with their own Wiimote

Apple apparently has a Wiimote-like remote in the works for their Apple TV. At least, that's our best guess regarding this patent from November of 2006, as we can't imagine what else Apple would have this planned for. Apple's version of the Wiimote even has an accelerometer, as well as a rather specific purpose detailed that relates to gaming.

Of course, it's only just a patent. We've no idea about the possibility of this device actually becoming a product on retail shelves.

The most divisive question about the Wiimote answered

Forget the appropriateness of motion controls for varying genres, or the difficulty in modeling representative movement. Will it blend? The Wii Remote has become such a cultural phenomenon that it can now be used to market other products, like the Blendtec Total Blender.

Citing his disdain with his Uncle Floyd's un-wrist-strapped Wiimote tossing, and being the host of a series of web videos called "Will It Blend," Blendtec's Tom Dickson tossed two Wiimotes into a Total Blender for science. As you would expect from pretty much any piece of electronics put inside a blender, the two remotes waggled themselves into a fine mist inside the pitcher.

Oh, sorry, we shouldn't have given away the ending.

Iwata on Microsoft's rumored Wiimote rival: 'Pft.'

Speculation that Microsoft may be about to launch a rival to the Wii Remote started early last month, yet Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's thoughts on the matter have only publicly emerged now. His verdict? A resounding, distinctly unimpressed "Meh."

Well, we're paraphrasing a bit there, but it's more or less what he meant. "We are not concerned about what other companies may do," Iwata told an audience of investors. "[We're] rather more concerned with presenting [...] new ideas to our customers based on the prospect that our existing customers will surely get tired of [gameplay] enabled by the Wii Remote if we do not try to improve the experience."

Rather than fret over what Microsoft and Sony get up to, Iwata says he'd prefer that Nintendo concentrated on producing more "new surprises" for consumers. Or, to put it another way, keep one step ahead of the competition, and they'll never catch you.

Wiimote cufflinks, for the Wii owner who has everything

"For those times that you are away from your beloved gaming system, at least you can pretend to be fighting your evil nemesis, Gargamel."

Rather than referencing the arch-nemesis of the Smurfs, we presume the folks at Cufflinks.com actually meant to say Ganon. Still, we'll forgive them the odd error, because hey, these sterling silver Wiimote cufflinks are pretty much the dapperest accessories we've ever seen for Wii lovers. They're fully reversible thanks to the tiny silver nunchuk on the end, and are just about discreet enough for your next wedding/awards ceremony/court appearance.

But before you reach for your wallet, know this: at $150, they're not that much cheaper than a Wii itself.

WiiMan is a human Wiimote

While we're not adverse to posting completely kickass examples of cosplay, sometimes the hobby makes us speechless for all the wrong reasons. Take, for example, WiiMan -- the white fabric-clad manboy, with a Wiimote decal on the front of his costume. Oh, and let's not forget the cape.

One cool thing about Wiiman, though, is that the Wiimote on his costume is wired to work like an actual Wiimote. Of course, that's one of those things that sounds better in theory than in practice, because feeling up some guy in a superhero costume (or watching him feel up himself) while playing Wii is something we tend to avoid.

Still, we admire WiiMan's dedication. It's not everyday you see a man dressed as a functioning Wiimote, amirite?

(Note: We know some circles won't consider this as official cosplay, but it's close enough for our standards.)

Johnny Lee rocks the TED conference

The TED (Technology Entertainment Design) conference gives some of the brightest people in the world, across wildly divergent disciplines, a forum to share their brilliant ideas. This year's lineup of speakers included names like Stephen Hawking, Al Gore, and ... Johnny Lee.

In the midst of a bunch of Very Serious Discussions about Very Serious Topics, Johnny manages to totally make a highbrow crowd care about the Waggle Wand. He does this by being awesome. There aren't any new demonstrations here, but it's totally worth it to see an audience's reaction to what is pretty much magic for the first time.

Rumor: Microsoft working on Wiimote-style device

On the face of it, the latest rumor that Microsoft is planning a Wiimote-esque peripheral (purportedly developed by Rare) for the Xbox 360 carries all the hallmarks of a wind-up. There's the obligatory "anonymous source," the hastily drawn MS Paint sketch you see to the right, and plenty of disclaimers -- "if it is indeed released," "if the project comes to fruition" -- in the MTV Multiplayer blog post that broke the rumor.

Look closer, however, and the speculation seems to gain credibility. As our sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy notes, Rare also happens to be developing The Fast and the Furriest for Xbox Live Arcade, which features "a wand type input device for gesture recognition." And it's no secret that Microsoft has spent the last few months jealously eyeing Nintendo's hold over the "casual" crowd -- but would the company be quite so brazen in ripping off Nintendo's gaming wand?

Details unleashed for Wii version of The Force Unleashed

GamePro had some time to check out the Wii version of upcoming Lucasarts game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. During their time with it, they managed to sink their teeth into the robust PVP aspect (called Duel Mode, it allows for one-on-one combat between 27 different characters from the Star Wars universe) of the game, as well as provide details on how the motion controls will work. They even took time to compare the two versions of the game graphically, showing the difference in character detail and textures between them. But, who cares about graphics? The controls are where it's at, right?

For the chart containing the game's controls on Wii, click here or head past the break.

Get your body into it: W_space

For us, music is little more than something that plays in the background during the massacre of endless enemies. It is a trumpet's call, heralding our arrival in a virtual world where we call the shots. Outside of those worlds resides the music of man, which we cannot attest you knowing that much about.

When you use an entire, custom-made outfit (which proudly sports eight Wiimotes) and your body to create and manipulate music in real time, however, then you deserve the lowly props that come from being featured on a video game blog read by a record seven mothers. They've seen this video and agreed: people need to watch this brilliant use of technology in action. So listen to them and hit up the above video already.

Wiimote 'extreme' LED mod is dazzling

When we hear the word "extreme" in the title of anything, we usually assume we'll hate it. (Note: This rule of thumb is especially important when the "ex" syllable is replaced by the letter "x".) We were therefore surprised to see how utterly freaking awesome SiebenDX's "Wiimote extreme LED mod" was.

It's not even just the Wiimotes, Nunchucks, and Classic Controllers modded with LED bling that make them worth checking out, but the video itself is entertaining. While "Through the Fire and the Flames" wouldn't be our first choice at accompanying music (well, maybe it would be someone's first choice), we enjoy how the LEDs coordinate with the music. It's like watching some sort of LED-mod-meets-Guitar Hero hybrid.

Then again, maybe we're just easily amused. Ooh, look at the pretty colors!

Wii Warm Up: Accessories

There are a lot of different Wii accessories out there. You've got recharge docks, light gun shells and wireless nunchuk adapters, just to name a few. There are plenty of accessories available for Wii gamers to plunk down cash for.

So what accessories do you have? Do you own a Classic Controller? Plan on loving the Wii Wheel or Balance Board when they release? Tell us about your accessories or what accessories you have an eye on!

Wii Fanboy poll: Best way to play Brawl?

So, you've had more than 24 hours to play Brawl. You've unlocked several characters, took the fight online and probably spent some time gawking at your trophies. But, the real question lurking in the back of many a fanboy's (and fangirl's) mind is: which control scheme is the best to go with?

When you get bored of controlling game characters, control real life

If there's one thing we hate, it's having to do stuff. While we pride ourselves on being in tip-top blogger shape (our knuckles are immaculate), the rest of our body is a mushy mess of undeveloped muscle. When you spend most of your time clacking away on a keyboard, you'll be surprised at how quickly your body becomes pretty useless.

That's why we're just totally in love with the above video. If the Wiimote can control some curtains, imagine what else it can do. Pour orange juice? Hang a spice rack? Take our grandpa for a walk? The possibilities are endless!

Video demo of Wiimote and TV playing nice

With the TV Guide Channel releasing in Japan today, many wondered exactly how the Wiimote would be used as a remote for the television, as well. Thanks to the video above, this important new features needs not reside only in the darkest corners of your imagination. And ... uh, it works just like you would expect. It changes channels and works the volume. It even looks really fun.

DIY Zapper made out of mystery material [update]

Update: Apparently, this was some sort of contest regarding homemade Zappers in Chile. You can see all of the entrants here.

Scotch tape? Newspaper? A combination of both?

Hey, we're all for the Zapper mods around here, but we don't like them so much when we have to figure out what they're exactly made of. On top of that, this thing is just ... well, it's ugly. Other DIY solutions at least had some semblance of being something you could actually look at. This just looks like a garbled mess of paper, scotch tape and cardboard. We'll give the folks responsible an "A" for effort, though. Anything to save twenty bucks, amirite?

If you have a DIY Zapper you created or stumbled upon while surfing the vast ocean of tubes that is the internet, drop us a line. We like to hear about these kinds of things.
