Sting to shred in Guitar Hero: World Tour

Along with Jimi Hendrix and Ozzy (and other notable classic rockers), Sting will have his likeness featured in the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour. The original story over at USAToday.com has since been pulled (all we've got is this image to go on), so we can't find exact details as to what capacity he'll be featured (Will he be playing The Police songs? His own tracks?), but the screen above tells us the man will be rocking the bass.

Any Sting fans out there? Like his old stuff, or his new stuff? Or both?

Activision Blizzard still 'reviewing' fate of Ghostbusters

For those of us who enjoyed unprecedented levels of excitement at the announcement of a Ghostbusters game, it's been a rocky ride ever since. First, we heard it was canceled, then the Terminal Reality boss said it would be published. Now, we just don't know what's up.

The recently-merged Activision Blizzard doesn't know what's up, either. That's why they're still considering what to do with the game and "reviewing its options regarding titles that it will not be publishing." This means that should the company decide not to publish the game, it could be sold off to another publisher. Either way, we just want to see it release.

Guitar Hero: World Tour's Australian pricing revealed

Australian gamers are, by now, either used to getting treated terribly by game companies, or really depressed. At this point, when a game comes out only a little late or somewhat overpriced compared to other regions, it must be a great relief.

Activision has disclosed the pricing scheme for the Australian release of Guitar Hero: World Tour. The prices differ by platform, with the Wii version consistently just a bit higher than the PS2 version and lower than the other next-gen versions. $79.95 ($66.61 US) pays for just the game, $159.95 ($133.27 US) gets a "Guitar Bundle," and the Super Bundle, containing the game, guitar, drums, and microphone, will cost $319.95. Compared to Rock Band, that seems like -- oh, right.

DragonForce talks Guitar Hero vs real guitar, future games may include their tracks

"People ask me about Guitar Hero every day, there's no way I can escape it."

DragonForce has gotten a lot of attention, thanks to their song "Through the Fire and Flames" being included in Guitar Hero 3. But, what about playing the game versus playing a real guitar? Well, they each require a lot of practice, so they have that in common, and they each have their benefits. Does one help with the other, though? It looks like we're not going to get that answer anytime soon.

The video does say that future Guitar Hero games may include DragonForce songs, but, sadly, the video isn't embeddable, so you'll have to head over to YouTube here to give it a watch.

Older artists re-record classics for World Tour, four new tracks confirmed

Guitar Hero: World Tour is going to be a big game. Not only because of all of the features included in the title, but also because it's making some of the most legendary of rockers come out of the woodwork to remaster their songs for the game. MC5's Wayne Kramer is one of these figures, as he went into the studio to re-record his band's hit song "Kick Out the Jams" just for this game. Along with Wayne, friends Jerry Cantrell of Alice and Chains and Gilby Clark formerly of Guns 'N' Roses joined in on the track. Also, it turns out that when The Sex Pistols re-recorded a track for Guitar Hero 3, they also did another track, "Pretty Vacant," which will be featured in the upcoming game. As if that wasn't enough, Motorhead also hit the studio and redid their song "Overkill."

On top of that, four new tracks were also confirmed for the game, albeit from more modern artists. These tracks are none other than:
  • The Living End -- "Prisoner of Society"
  • Los Lobos -- "La Bamba"
  • Bullet for My Valentine -- "Scream Aim Fire"
  • Lacuna Coil -- "Our Truth"
To check out the videos for these four songs, head past the break.

Guitar Hero: World Tour won't include 'No Fail' option

One of the new features in Rock Band 2 will be a "No Fail" mode, in which gamers can enjoy the song they're playing without fear of failing out because, well ... they're just not that talented a wannabe rocker. And it turns out this casual-focused feature will be absent from Guitar Hero: World Tour.

But, the real question is: does the game need it? Certainly, other rhythm-based games sold extremely well without it, including past Guitar Hero games and the original Rock Band. Does this lack of a "No Fail" option tick off any of you? Are you good enough that it doesn't even matter? Or are you going to be picking up Rock Band 2 and don't really care for this Guitar Hero: World Tour business?

New Smashing Pumpkins single to debut in Guitar Hero: World Tour

Actiblizzion has announced that '90s fixture the Smashing Pumpkins have recorded a new song, "G.L.O.W." specifically for release as a Guitar Hero: World Tour download, marking the first time a new song has debuted in a music game under those specific circumstances. The track, which will be included on an album later, will be released as part of a three-song DLC pack, along with "1979" and "The Everlasting Gaze." The first in-concert performance of the new song is above, thanks to some dude who took a camera to a Pumpkins show!

The deal isn't just for DLC, however: Billy Corgan will appear in-game -- and as a playable character in career mode, even -- and the wonderful "Today" will be included on the disc. We hope it introduces the Pumpkins to some of the youngsters who may be surprised to learn that a long time ago, guitars had strings on them and could be used to play any song.

Activision thinking of charging subscription fee for Guitar Hero?

There's an interesting tidbit over at IGN. At the bottom of one of their articles on the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour, you'll notice a little blurb with an asterisk. It reads: "*Online gameplay is only available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Wii and may require an additional subscription." Subscription?

Part of us thinks this ties into the whole music-sharing thing that was revealed during GC 2008. Remember, there Activision commented on paying for the ability to upload more of your own custom tracks. So, is this something to do with that? Or, are Wii owners going to need to pay a bit extra? We're thinking it'll have something to do with the music creation, but until we hear definitive word, this one's going to be left open for debate.

[Thanks, Robert!]

GC 2008: Activision demonstrates music creation in Guitar Hero: World Tour

To say that Guitar Hero: World Tour has a lot of content is now an understatement. The game is so ridiculously full of goodies, fans are likely going to explogasm when they watch the video above. It goes into incredible detail, showing off the music creation fun you can have in Activision's latest installment in its popular franchise. Whether you're mixing drum loops for your tracks or turning your guitar into a keyboard (could this confirm a keyboard peripheral is inbound?), it looks like you won't be bored with Guitar Hero: World Tour anytime soon after its release.

There's been a lot of Guitar Hero news lately. Like the confirmation that Miis will be included in the Wii game (as well as an explanation of how they'll be incorporated). Also, don't forget to check out which tracks have been confirmed for the game so far!

Quantum of Solace has Zapper support, online multiplayer

For those of you who've been tracking Quantum of Solace over at The Stiq, you know that most of the worthwhile things to discuss about the game have come from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Well, it would appear that Activision isn't leaving Wii owners out to dry, as some cool features are being utilized in the Wii version of the title.

For one, there will be multiple control schemes. Gamers can use the tried-and-true Wiimote and Nunchuk setup, or they can bust out their Zapper and play with that. On top of that, Activision has also confirmed the game will feature online multiplayer, as well as 4-player split-screen local multiplayer, which is exclusive to the Wii installment.

Activision is also hard at work to make sure the game is no graphical slouch. Seeing as how the engine behind the game is the same used in Call of Duty 4, we're sure Quantum of Solace will have some lovely visuals.

Call of Duty: World at War ships off this November

For those of you looking to get your hands (or your Zapper) dirty in the Pacific theater, know that the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: World at War will be hitting shelves this November, according to OnlytheGames. They're claiming an Activision PR rep divulged this info to them and we're inclined to believe it. November seems to be a good month to release games.

Joystiq managed to pry a statement from Activision: "we haven't made any announcement about date other than fall of 2008." Oddly enough, November falls right into that timeframe.

Rumor: New Guitar Hero peripheral coming?

G4 apparently has the "hot word," which we're assuming means "unfounded rumor", that Activision is looking to toss another peripheral into the Guitar Hero World Tour mix. They're reporting that Neversoft's Brian Bright spilled the beans, stating that he "wouldn't go into detail about what it will be," but that it's "specifically for the game's Studio mode." Hm, interesting ...

Our cruel overlords at Joystiq have contacted Activision for clarification on the whole issue. Popular opinion seems to be that it's a keyboard of some type, but we'd like to think the game will feature something a bit more old school, like the guy in the image above. We're just weird like that.

Guitar Hero's Mii Freestyle mode explained

Vicarious Visions has confirmed that Guitar Hero: World Tour on the Wii will have not only all of the content found in the other versions, including DLC, but it will also have an exclusive "Mii Freestyle" mode, which we first heard about yesterday. But it goes beyond just having Miis in the normal Guitar Hero game.

Mii Freestyle mode is actually an exclusive game mode in which players can create music on the fly using Guitar Hero guitars and drums -- or the Wiimote and Nunchuk as air drums, Wii Music-style, if they want to for some reason. The instruments lay down predetermined notes or sequences onto the familiar Guitar Hero note chart according to the style of music chosen. It's sort of a jamming version of the Music Studio found in the game. Vicarious Visions' David Nathanielsz calls the mode "a helpful bridge between the core game and the Music Studio in Guitar Hero: World Tour for Wii owners."

The Wii World Tour, then, has all of the features of the other versions, plus a new exclusive mode. The only thing the other systems have on it now is graphics, which matter very little in a music game. Barring accidental monaural sound output or something, the Wii version will now be the superior version. Take that, Rock Band!

Ozzy to rock Guitar Hero World Tour

Joining Jimi Hendrix, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne's likeness will be featured in the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour. Oh, and some of his songs will be in the game (joining many others), as well. Which tracks? None other than popular tunes "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley."

For those of you unaware of these songs, we've embedded some videos past the break. So head through and let your inner rocker out.
