'Wii for Women' this Sunday at Best Buy

This Sunday, about 50 Best Buy stores will hold a "Wii for Women" event, offering game demos and drawings for Wiis, GPS units and spa visits. If you'd like to check out some Wii games and maybe win some stuff (and, we suppose, if you're a woman), head to one of these stores between 1 and 4 PM on March 30th.

Before you get all outraged at Best Buy for targeting women in such a clumsy and potentially insulting manner, we'd just like to say that we're almost 100% sure this is all Nintendo's doing. We would be extremely surprised if half or more of the demo units weren't devoted to Wii Fit. We're quite certain that this is a Wii Fit promo event, and that it represents part of Nintendo's increased promotional effort for the exergame.

Best Buy's Brawl gift card doesn't come cheap

The cheapest way we've found to get Super Smash Bros. Brawl so far is through Gamestop, but if you're not looking to trade in games, you can look to Best Buy instead. The retailer isn't cutting the price of the soon-to-be-beloved Nintendo fighter, but they're offering a $10 gift card when you buy Brawl and another game that's over $39.99.

That's still not as good as the Circuit City deal, which also will net you a $10 gift card, but without making you buy a second game. The deal at Circuit City, though, is for preorders only.

So, if you don't intend to preorder the latest Smash Bros., Best Buy may be your best bet. The offer lasts from 3/9-3/29 in stores only, and you must show them the promotional coupon (click the picture to the right).

Quest for Bargain Treasure [update]

Judging by its disappointing sales, very few of you went out and bought Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure when it hit stores lack October. Was it the god-awful title that turned you off? Or perhaps the kiddie colorful art direction? Surely it wasn't the price? Paying $40 for a AAA third-party title -- one developed by Capcom, no less -- seems more than reasonable!

Well, if it was in fact the $40, take note that Amazon has slightly marked down the price, temporarily listing Zack & Wiki for only $32.99 (free shipping). What more do you need to convince you into buying this critically-acclaimed adventure game?

[Update: Best Buy has the game on sale for $29.99! There's still the matter of shipping/handling, but you can probably still find the game at your nearest Best Buy location. Thanks, vidGuy!]

Wii looks like it isn't the violence-inciting gift of the holiday season

We're always happy to hear about someone getting in on the Wii experience for the first time. New adopters who might have been turned away from gaming at one point in the past or are in on the activity for the first time warm our heart, because it shows the impressive power of the console. But, what was that we said about hunting one down?

Columnist Mark Morford works for the the San Francisco Gate and recently did something he's never done before: got up at the crack of dawn to track down a Wii. He got in line at his local Best Buy to get a system and, sure enough, he got one. It wasn't just for him, but for his little sister. Such a selfless act can only make us appreciate the fellow more.

What was great about this particular story is that despite it being so close to Christmas, and the Wii's unavailability still, the line was full of friendly and calm people. There wasn't any of the crazy Black Friday stampeding or selfish shoving in line, but people who had come to experience something wonderful. Playing is believing, sure, but these stories make us believe in something else: humanity.

Have any of your experiences in hunting down a Wii been different?

Is Best Buy purposely holding their stock?

The Consumerist is reporting a very odd story. Apparently, some Best Buy out in New Jersey has been trying to pull the wool over the eyes of their patrons, with a single employee prowling the store, claiming to have the "very last Wii." Of course, someone snatched it up with the quickness, but not 30 minutes later, another employee was at it again, prowling the store looking for another customer to snatch the console from them. There was even an announcement on the PA system.

The tipster even said he overheard two manager types discussing the "sales technique," deciding on when they should send out the next Wii.
