Best of the best: the first revolution

Everyone has an opinion about what makes a good game. You've got one, we've got one (or several, as there are several of us here), and the reviewers, they all have their own preferences, too. Sometimes, however, those opinions all just seem to coincide, and then we know a game is truly something special.

As part of our celebration of the first year of the Wii, we thought we would do a comparison of the best-reviewed games released for the system alongside our picks for the top games. Sometimes they overlap, but we slipped in a few extras that we feel just might be worth your time.

Wii Warm Up: Best of the 'Cube

Yesterday's discussion was just so damned good that we felt a need to continue it. For those of you who didn't have a GameCube (shame), by now you've had a chance to discover some of the system's real gems, like the game pictured in yesterday's post, Eternal Darkness. For those of you who held steady with Nintendo throughout the GameCube years, there was a lot to love, despite the system's occasional bad press. So tell us: what were some of your favorites? What do you still recommend to friends?

Wii Warm Up: Your top three

Now that we've comfortably settled into life with the Wii (almost a year!), surely three games at least stand out above the pack. The question is ... which three? Are you gonna toe the hardcore Nintendo line and call Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, and Metroid Prime 3 the stand-outs? Or are you gonna bang the drum for Zack & Wiki, maybe? What are the three best titles so far on the system, in your opinion?

Wii Warm Up: Metroid Prime 3 not included

Every week we discuss what we're playing, but that doesn't mean we're necessarily discussing the merits and flaws of particular games. Besides Metroid Prime 3, for those lucky enough to be in regions that already have it, how do you feel about the games you've played recently on the Wii? What's been the best about them, and what's been the worst? Let's compare notes.

Wii Warm Up: Has Metroid set the standard?

We're willing to go on record stating the Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is about the best thing we've slipped into our Wii so far. Wii Sports was a great introduction to the console, and certainly made great use of the motion controls, but we have to go with the richer, fuller experience the latest Metroid has to offer.

In fact, now that we've seen something so fantastic, our standards are likely to be a little higher. Are we alone in this? Fun is fun, certainly, so we'll still love anything that's a good time, but for anything that claims an epic experience, Corruption is setting the bar pretty high.

Wii Warm Up: E3 -- your thoughts

This year's E3 had a lot of ups and downs. First and foremost, of course, there was the changed format ... and second, Nintendo's presentation and news seems to be pretty polarizing among fans. Some people thought the show was a win, and others are less convinced. We're interested in knowing how you feel about the show over all, and your favorite news and video items from the coverage. Go ahead. Spill. After all, we showed you our ending thoughts.

Wii Warm Up: Best of the best

This should be a pretty easy one -- of everything released so far on the Virtual Console, what's been your favorite? What have you not minded spending money on? We've been talking about the VC all week, so of course this question just begs to be answered ... and we expect a hot debate. So let's get it on!

We fully expect to hear a lot about various Zelda titles and maybe a few Castlevanias (we better hear some Castlevania) and perhaps an F-Zero or two, but surely someone will make JC proud and name Ninja Spirit or something.

Best Buy whips out mad dealz

BlingggggSeriously. Best Buy is having a small-yet-appreciated discount on a few of the Wii launch titles. The following reductions should have already taken place:
  • Red Steel - $29.99 (formerly $49.99)
  • Super Swing Golf - $29.99 (formerly $49.99)
  • Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - $39.99 (formerly $49.99)
Perhaps not the finest of titles, but the significant price-cuts to RS and SMB might convince gamers who were on the fence to take the financial plunge. Any of you guys out there going to finally pick one of these titles up? Can we come to your house and play with you (we work for cookies and the occasional mixed drink here)?

The best and worst so far

We've had enough time now with the Wii to discover some real gems (how many hours have you put into just Wii Sports so far?) ... but like any system, there are also a few duds, particularly within the launch window. If you're looking to expand your collection, or if you're one of the Wii-less trying to figure out how to budget when your day comes, we're here to help you find the best and the worst of the Wii so far.

MASSIVE clearance at Best Buy starts today

If you're near a Best Buy store, gather up your $2 bills and get going, because they're in the midst of an epic videogame clearance, and you'll want to get there before the unscrupulous speculator types grab all the stuff to sacrifice to the ravenous eBay. You've got to be wily to get to the goods before the FatWalleters and the CAGs!

There aren't any Wii games on clearance, but there are plenty of Wii-compatible Gamecube games. We've got a list of all the Gamecube software on sale after the break. Don't expect to find all of it-- most of it has been out of stock for months or years at most stores, and the price changed to clear out remaining copies. But we hope you do find what you're looking for in abundance. And we hope we can make it to Best Buy soon enough to luck into our own copy of Chibi Robo.

[Thanks, ali emamdjomeh!]

Gamecube for Wii credit, and tomorrow's chaos

Sweet deal?
Perhaps some of you are reading this article via your smartphone, waiting in bitter cold weather because you're sick and tired of not having a precious Nintendo Wii. We understand. Tomorrow's deluge of Wii's, which should be occurring at many nation-wide outlets (Best Buy, Target, and Circuit City all seem to be proper candidates), may make many people quite happy. It may make many people really, really pissed off.

While you might be willing to spend whatever it takes, we have a bit of thrifty advice. First off, EB Games is taking your soon-to-be-completely-worthless Gamecube as fifty dollars of trade-in credit for a Wii. Normally, they only give twenty-five. While EBG and Gamestop have not been officially confirmed as having units available for tomorrow, it's worth a phone call (why would they advertise such a deal if it were impossible to use?). Also, it seems Tower Records is having a massive sale, with 25% off of pretty much everything, including games. Pick 'em up cheap! And good luck, troopers.

[Thanks, Dave and Vincent!]

Best Buy holding out until 12/17?

According to a scan of The Retail Insider (we assume it's an in-company newsletter, we never worked for Best Buy) available over at Go Nintendo, all the Best Buys are going to be holding all of their available Wii units to sell on the weekend of December 17th. You can read the reasons why above, however we're still chalking this up to be a rumor at this point due to the typo in the last bullet point.

What do you guys think?

Rumor: Wii kiosks in your local Best Buy in October [update 1]

Over at GWN, there is some speculation pointing towards Best Buys getting Wii kiosks set up on October 29th. The information suggests that the Wii area will have two Wiimotes, Wii Sports, and a Phillips 480i, standard definition television set hooked to surround sound. Sounds good to us, but we would've liked to see them sooner! I guess we're just selfish like that.

Check after the break for the images.

[Thanks Nushio!]

[Update 1: Turns out the second image is fake, as we initially thought. We're still holding out for the date though. Thanks Neko!]
