Bionic Commando and the soundtrack you won't hear on the Wii

One of the many reasons we love Bionic Commando and want to see it on the Virtual Console so badly is for its awesome, 8-bit soundtrack. So, when Capcom released Simon Viklund's album for Bionic Commando Rearmed, which reworks the NES songs into a more modern-day sound, we had to have it.

We know that Rearmed isn't coming to the Wii, despite Wii gamers' pleas and petitions. Still, there's no denying the NES roots in Viklund's music, and just because we're not getting the actual game doesn't mean we should deprive ourselves of some great tunes, does it?

In fact, the folks at Capcom are releasing the soundtrack even though they think they'll lose money on it, simply because they love and believe in the music that much. After listening to it, we have to say that we can see why. If you're interested, you can get the full soundtrack on iTunes or at Sumthing Digital for $9.99 (or buy the tracks you like separately for $0.99).

Wherefore art thou, Mega Man?

When Capcom said that we wouldn't be seeing Bionic Commando on the Wii, that wasn't entirely true. What is true is that the decision is completely up to Nintendo -- but that goes for all Capcom games, not just the retrospectively controversial Hitler-killing ones.

According to Capcom's Public Relations Director Chris Kramer, the company licensed the rights to their games to Nintendo. It's therefore completely up to Nintendo whether and when Capcom titles get released on the Virtual Console -- Capcom no longer has any input in the decision.

That's all fine and good, but at the same time, it makes us a little uneasy. One question we have -- where is the Mega Man series on North American consoles? Why is it taking so long for Nintendo of America to release even one game of the beloved series? Nintendo obviously has plenty of games on their plate that they'd like to release in a timely fashion, but when that stops us from playing some of our favorite Capcom classics, we can't say we're too happy about it.

What about you? Are there any Capcom games that you wish Nintendo would just hurry up with?

Capcom confirms: Bionic Commando not coming to VC

When we heard about the original Bionic Commando coming to Xbox Live and PSN, we couldn't help but hope that an announcement for the game on the VC would be soon to follow. Fast forward to four months later, and Capcom's Ben Judd recently stated in an interview with IGN that putting the NES version on the VC "couldn't happen."

According to Christian Svensson, the Senior Director of Strategic Planning & Research for Capcom, this isn't the company's fault. Rather, Nintendo is the one to blame, as Capcom would like nothing more than to have the game on the Virtual Console.

We've already done our own speculating as to why this game would be roadblocked by Nintendo, but to hear it confirmed is rather heartbreaking.

Virtually Overlooked: Bionic Commando

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.

This is the second time that Bionic Commando has been the inspiration for a Virtually Overlooked column. And just like the last time, I'm not really going to talk much about Bionic Commando's gameplay! As well-known as this masterpiece is, I may as well be describing an obscure Russian game about making horizontal lines out of falling blocks. You've played Bionic Commando. Dude with metal arm swings around, shoots soldiers. Nerds get the heck out of the way.

Instead, I'm going to focus on the issue of its absence from the Virtual Console, and a possible (sensationalist) reason for that omission: A reason called Adolf Hitler.

Bionic Commando cleared for XBL & PSN, VC next?

Word has hit that Capcom's NES title Bionic Commando will be making its way onto the Xbox 360 and PS3 via the Xbox Live and PSN services, respectively. While this is favorable news for those that own those systems and like downloading retro titles, what about us Wii owners? Are we left out to dry?

For the moment, it would seem that is the case. This report mentions nothing about the Virtual Console receiving the game. However, with all of the attention the new game is receiving, along with Nintendo's promise to keep games relatively unaltered on the Virtual Console, we wouldn't be surprised if the game were available for download soon enough.

We'll keep an eye out for confirmation, so stay tuned to Wii Fanboy for further information as it is released.

Hope for those that want Bionic Commando

Our good pal RMC over at Go Nintendo has undertaken a difficult task. You see, following the news that someone at Capcom gave hope to those that would like to see their latest title, Bionic Commando, grace the Wii, he's decided to try and get the word spread. He wants the fans to be heard and we couldn't agree more. We want him to be heard!

So, be sure to head over to the post at Go Nintendo and read up on the situation. Then, head on over to the online petition and sign it.

Capcom: Bionic Commando on Wii possible, if demand is there

When the game was revealed, we quickly replied with a "meh," anticipating the title would not arrive on our beloved Wii system (Capcom loves that 360 thing). Sure enough, it was only going to arrive on the other current-gen systems. But, times change and apparently Capcom could be open to changing the game up a tad and fitting it for the Wii. That is, if you all want it.

And, after watching the game's hero whip things, we have come to the conclusion that we want the game. The reticle aiming and whipping action looks like it would be a perfect match for the Wii's control scheme. Of course, should the game turn out to be bad, we'll be kicking ourselves for making such a stink about the whole thing.

What do you all think? Would you play the game, or could you not care less?

Virtually Overlooked: Umihara Kawase

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.

The recent reveal of a new Bionic Commando game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 got us very excited. Not about the new game, which looks heartbreakingly bland, but about old grappling hook games. But we can't exactly detail the NES Bionic Commando here. You've all searched for Super Joe, accidentally fired off shots in neutral zones, and blown up Hitler Master D. And the arcade version isn't as awesome. But there's another grappling game, for the Super Nintendo, that is even more grappling-focused than Bionic Commando.
