MadWorld finds a home online



A sparse official website has appeared for Platinum Games' MadWorld, along with the street-sign-through-cranium trailer the entire internet and its dog has seen by now, and three screenshots (which are also old, at least in internet terms).

What is new is the text that's on display, which consists largely of the MadWorld team explaining (in endearing Engrish) some of their stylistic choices, namely the black-and-white visuals (which are there to help convey "brutality") and the buckets of blood (included to create a sense of "exhilaration"). There's also confirmation of North American and European releases in Q1, 2009, and a brief discussion about "linking and layering moves," which (not for the first time) recalls the likes of God Hand. It's all a bit devoid of content otherwise, though worth keeping an eye on.

Mad World to make violence cheerful again



Are you sick to the back teeth of violence being so goddamn depressing? If so, Platinum Games, the developers formerly known as Clover, are right with you! In the latest edition of Famitsu, Platinum director Shigenori Nishikawa has declared that "cheerful violence" and "curb brawler" will be the themes of the company's first Wii title, Mad World. Echoes of God Hand, perhaps?

Mad World was unveiled yesterday through a shaky, grainy and spectacularly bloody video. Sporting heavily stylized black-and-white visuals, the only color to be found in the game was in the fountains of blood that regularly filled the screen. According to Famitsu, ultra-violence is very much the name of the game, which stars a troubled protagonist dedicated to committing his ultimate slaughter.

Suda and Wada behind bloodless No More Heroes



A recent announcement that Europe would be getting a bloodless version of No More Heroes didn't go down well with many of our bloodthirsty commenters. At the time, PAL publisher Rising Star Games refused to reveal what was behind the decision, but more light was shed on the omission earlier today, in a joint statement from director Suda51 and producer Yasuhiro Wada (pictured above unsuccessfully trying to give away free toilet roll and autographs on the streets of Akihabara).

Turns out that it was Suda and Wada themselves who decided to drop the outrageous levels of gore from the European version, citing the "broadly growing Wii market" in the region.

Not that this affects many of you, as the U.S. version still contains plenty of the crimson stuff. Buckets of it, in fact.

Rockstar's M-rated Wii console


My, is this Manhunt 2-themed Wii ever disgusting. If not for the fact that the Manhunt 2 logo is clearly visible, and the nominal stickering of the Nunchuk, it would look pretty much just like a blood-stained Wii. And Rockstar is betting that you'll find that cool enough to enter their Radio Rebellion Sweepstakes.

They're probably right, anyway. Limited-edition anything is a good way to get people's interest. Or free anything, for that matter. Did we mention you also get a 50" plasma TV?

While the Wii may not match our usual aesthetic, we still think it's a cool idea for a bizarre giveaway item, and another chance for Rockstar to capture some of the controversy they need to push copies of their game. Maybe later they'll release this as a skin for people who want the look, but already have a Wii. Or, we suppose, you could do it the old-fashioned way.

ABC News wants your Virtual Console questions

ABC News' "Be Seen Be Heard" is preparing a segment about the Wii, in which they'll be interviewing Amber McCollum, a product tester at Nintendo. In a very lazy Web 2.0 move, they're asking viewers to send in videos containing questions for Ms. McCollum.

So if you have any questions about the Virtual Console, please send them in! And if you happen to accidentally, you know, say the name of the site, we wouldn't object.

We personally want to know about the development process: are the games basically dumped ROMS or do they have to be reprogrammed for the Wii? If so, why? These are the best questions we can think of, because repeating "RONDO OF BLOOD" over and over again while staring intensely into a camera isn't a question.

Import VC games possible: Europe edition [update 1]

We recently brought you the news that Nintendo was still open to the possibility of bringing import Virtual Console games to the American Wii. In an interview with Eurogamer, a Nintendo UK spokesperson indicated that they're open to the possibility in PAL-land, as well. This possibility has added significance for European gamers, because it opens the door not only to Japanese and US games previously unreleased in Europe, but superior, faster NTSC versions of previously released games (PAL versions of which suffer from slowdown even now on the VC).

So, European Fanboys, what would you like to see on the Virtual Console? Rondo of Blood? How about Dracula X? Or maybe that Castlevania game that only got released in Japan on the PC Engine Super CD Rom? The possibilities are endless.

Red Steel to contain blood


According to a post on the IGN Insider boards, Ubisoft's Wii title Red Steel will feature blood spurting from enemies, yet to retain the T rating , no blood will stain the walls and floors in the environments. A similiar employment of the technique may be seen in Call of Duty 2 on the PC and Xbox 360. The post says:

"It's the same controls, I just believe they were a bit tighter as we were developing on the GC dev for, well, for a while. I can assure you that we have plenty of time to refine, tighten, and ensure that the controls are solid. In regards to the blood, there will be blood - just not in a grpahic way. I believe you can have blood spurt and then disappear and still not receive a teen rating. Regardless of that point, the game is all about the controller and it's movements - not so much about the graphics."
