Be a Cake Hero
Few cakes are so completely awesome that they earn the maker a marriage proposal, but then, not all cakes are a Guitar Hero homage. Charm White made this cake last fall for her then-boyfriend's birthday, but didn't manage to get around to talking much about it until recently, and talk she did -- by which we mean there's an entire step-by-step walkthrough on how she created the amazing cake. That doesn't mean we could actually pull it off (that probably takes patience and maybe some decorative talent), but knowing there's a how-to gives us a chance to pretend we could. Y'know. Kind of like Guitar Hero makes us feel like we could totally rock out for real.

Famicom leaves college and settles in to a secure office job
Time to get nostalgic, proud, and teary-eyed all at the same time. On this fifteenth day of July in the year 2008, the legendary Famicom turns 25 years young. Some of us (though not all of us) weren't even born when the Famicom was released in Japan in 1983, and that day marked the beginning of Nintendo's plot of world domination. They didn't get around to the United States until 1985 with the NES, but it's the thought that counts.A few committed folks at 1up have gone to extreme lengths marking this occasion, reminiscing about the life and times and significant games that made the little white box of fun so legendary. Is the Famicom dead? Hellz to the no -- in fact, you might say the Famicom legacy is just taking shape with new games and new ideas, all with origins dating back a quarter of a century.
As we begin today's E3 proceedings, spare a single thought for the console that changed the world for the better. Happy 25th birthday, Famicom!
Kart this cake to your wedding

It may seem strange, suggesting to your fiancee that the iconic wedding cake should have a Mario Kart theme -- but then again, everyone loves Mario Kart, so chances of success are pretty good.
This happy couple featured a stunning cake, which isn't just a replica of a particular object or character. This is the spirit of the entire Mario Kart world, baked and iced to picturesque perfection. Atop the many layers of goodness, each representing different courses and characters, is a kissing Mario and Peach figurine. So very sweet ... and tasty. Hit the jump for a few close-ups of this artistic achievement.

The best kind of celebration

Falcon cake goes great with a little Falcon punch
Reader Angela loves herself some Brawl. And, so do her friends. The gang got together to celebrate the game's release by making themselves a Smash Bros.-themed cake. If there's anything we'd like to replace Falcon's punch with, it's definitely cake. We like cake.
Angela, dear, nice job on including the DS in the picture. We have to ask, though. Why do you eat saltines with your cake? We usually go with the tried-and-true glass of milk.

Don't turn your back on this cake

Anywho, we had a lot of respect for James, up until he made one mistake: he ate the cake. We're not saying that delicious cakes (it was delicious, right?) shouldn't be eaten. We take every chance we get to eat delicious food. But something that is as skillfully crafted as this needs to be preserved and saved from consumption. Don't worry, though, we still love you James!
Check out his cake in our gallery below.
Who needs red potions when you have delicious cake?
If anything is going to restore our health out here in the real world, it's delicious food, not potions within reusable bottles (as sad as it is to say). But, then a huge problem pops up (for us at least) as we stare at this lovely cake that pays homage to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: can you eat something that looks so amazing? We imagine that cutting a cake like this, carving out a piece for ourselves then ingesting it would probably feel something like robbing the dead or stealing toys from orphans.
Seriously, we don't know if our stomach could take the guilt of consuming something so beautiful.

Don't look away! It's a Boo Mario cake!
We've managed to abstain from posting about video game-related cakes for a record seven weeks now -- mostly to avoid the hackneyed "The cake is a lie" comments that inevitably follow -- but we're breaking that streak today with this fondant-covered beauty. Chefs John Thai, Zack Ginies, and Lori Diaz baked this Boo Mario together, sprinkling the plate with 1UPs before sending him out to save his imprisoned brother. Isn't he adorable? Shake your Wii remote and float past the post break to see more photos of this haunting dessert. Make sure to avoid the swinging spotlights!
Man makes his own Martha Stewart Wii cake, appears on her show
Remember when Martha made that Wii cake? Well, Brian Walak from Massachusetts decided he would try to make his very own cake, one that is actually edible (yup, nobody could eat Martha's) and he succeeded, taking it to a bake sale. If you're interested in making your own, the ingredients are provided.

Wii and weddings, so happy together
We've all seen plenty of different kinds of cakes shaped as a Wii or its accessories, so this is nothing new to you or us. But, this whole Wii wedding craze is. Frankly, it's something we welcome with a big smile on our face, because nothing brightens our day more than Wii and love.
Actually, to us, the Wii is love. Love in console form.

Wii Warm Up: Wii flavor
So, we've seen quite a few Wii cakes, but only from the outside ... so we thought it necessary to ask you, dear readers, this very important question: what flavor should a Wii cake be? JC (who should apparently be beaten) suggested lemon. We heartily disagree (we love the flavor, but not with buttercream or vanilla icing) and would like to see a good ol' plain white cake, though we'd offer props if it were tinted blue. Chocolate might be a nice surprise -- and hey, it's dark in there. p.s. don't worry, vidGuy, we listened to your suggestion in the comments yesterday, but we have to take a day off from the heavy topics!
The tastiest console we've seen all week
Looks like flickr user rufus50 is taking a page from the Martha Stewart cookbook on this one -- though we hope it tastes better than her admittedly beautiful effort apparently did. Now we just need to add a classic controller cake and maybe some game-shaped cakes, and -- are we getting a little silly? It must be the sugar high.
For those who are interested in trying this one at home, alas ... no helpful how-to was included with the picture.

Martha Stewart bakes a cake worth hiding a file in
Has the time limit run out on Martha Stewart prison humor? We hope not, even though we know the 'baking a file into a cake' humor died out eons ago.
Martha appears on the cover of the August Wired magazine, promoting a feature inside on how to bake a Wii cake. It is amazingly cool to us that a mainstream magazine has not only the Wii on its cover, but a Wii cake. Gaming cakes seem so much like the exclusive domain of the Internet.

Wii classic controller birthday cake

We've seen plenty of cakes shaped into Wii remotes and even the Wii console itself before, but a classic controller cake? That's a new one for us! A thoughtful girlfriend treated her gamer paramour with this chocolate dessert for his 21st birthday. We're not sure if he will be able to actually play Virtual Console games with it, but he'll have to find a Wii remote cake to hook the controller onto first before we can find out!

Gamer cakes, from sleek to sloppy

Everyone loves cake. If you don't ... well, don't tell us, and we won't have to take you out back and beat you with green pipes. These cakes, however, are decadent creations that only a gamer could truly love, and Nintendo makes up almost half the entries on You Newb's list of ten game-themed cakes. What's up with the DS cake and Katamari, though? Katamari's got no love for us. We're sad.
But we'd still eat it. And your little Wii cake, too.
And hey, look -- our buddies at Engadget got featured on a cake, too. Does that make them sort of sugary celebrities?
