VC Monday Madness: Mario Golf and Shining Force II

There were lots of titles that released this week, both on store shelves and distributed through the Wii. On the Virtual Console, we've got two games. So, hit up the video above, then head past the break for the rest.

Wii releases this week: We Love Golf edition

This week's most notable release is surely Camelot's latest and greatest golf game, We Love Golf. We've been covering the title for quite some time and are glad to see it finally release. Will it offer up a better experience than other competition on the console, such as Super Swing Golf 2 and Tiger Woods 09? Only time will tell.
So, who is picking up what?

Camelot talks about why we should love We Love Golf

We Love Golf isn't the first golf title that Camelot has worked on. After pioneering the Hot Shots! franchise, they then worked on the Mario Golf games. Now, we're all awaiting the release of We Love Golf, which hits retail shelves in North America next week.

Siliconera recently got the chance to talk with Camelot's founding brothers, Hiroyuki and Shugo Takahashi, about the upcoming game. The two talk about many things, from the importance of motion-based controls, to how development on previous titles have aided them in creating wha they think is a very solid product. We don't know about you, but we're pretty pumped for We Love Golf.

We Love Tiny Golf Bags

... and Capcom totally knows it. That's why they're tempting prospective golfers with a fun-sized golf bag, which is actually meant to hold the Wii Remote that substitutes for clubs in We Love Golf. Clever, right? The golf bag accessory comes in a jaunty red and looks just big enough to carry one Wiimote around. Since there's rarely any call for just a well-protected Wiimote clipped to something else (at least in our personal experience), this is bound to end up proudly displayed among other preorder items.

GameStop is offering the accessory with copies of the game (shipping next month), as is Capcom's own perilous online store.

Summer is here (at least in the northern hemisphere), and the weather has been beautiful. It can almost be described as perfect golfing weather, only we can't golf (unless you're talking about the mini variety) and don't belong to any country clubs.

Thanks to Camelot and Capcom's We Love Golf, though, we can at least get a virtual golfing experience next month. Check out the new screens below to see the characters dressed in even more Capcom outfits, such as Chun-Li's, Ryu's, Jill Valentine's (pictured), and more.

We think we'll love We Love Golf

Camelot has always done a good job handling Nintendo sports, specifically those of the golf and tennis varieties, so We Love Golf is definitely on our watch list. This video also gives us a nice feeling about the title. Seeing some of our favorite Capcom characters in action is enticing, and we love the bright and cheery atmospheres. Most importantly, though, the gameplay looks spot-on. Now, all that remains to be seen is how well the Wiimote's motion controls work in the game.

If Camelot managed to get that down, though, all of these elements combined with online play promises a very irresistible package.

Zack loves golf, Wiki unavailable for comment

Well, it's not actually Zack. It's some We Love Golf-er in a Zack costume. That's why he looks so, you know, not like Zack at all. Capcom has just added a character likeness from their beloved Wii adventure to go with the other Capcom costumes found in the golf game. We enjoy silly costumes as much as we enjoy playing games online -- maybe more (we're weird)!

Our gallery has been refreshed with a bunch of lovely new images from Capcom's Digital Day press event. Check it out if you love golf (video game screenshots)!

We Love Golf even more now that it supports online play

Do you notice something missing from the Japanese boxart of We Love Golf? Perhaps, say, a little blue circle indicating online play?

Yes, it's true, the Japanese version of We Love Golf doesn't support Wi-Fi. But, fortunately for us, Camelot made some changes to the game.

Nintendo Power recently confirmed with the developer that online play was added to the American and European versions, making us even more excited for this title. If anything could top playing Wiimote golf as one of our favorite Capcom attorneys, it'd be adding an online experience on top of that.

Ken and Morrigan to love golf

Because it's now the law that all cartoony sports games must contain company mascots, Capcom recently asked fans who they'd most like to see make a cameo in the western release of Camelot's We Love Golf. A week and a half on, and the people have spoken, voting for Ken (from, duh, Street Fighter) and Morrigan (from the Darkstalker series).

Neither character exactly springs to mind when golf is mentioned, though we suppose that's precisely the point. Mind you, we fear Morrigan especially will struggle to fit in. Will that choice of hair color really fly with the stuffy golf establishment? And what of those demonic wings sprouting from the side of her head? She'll be a pariah within minutes of flapping into the clubhouse.

Capcom lets you choose who loves Golf

As the picture above demonstrates, Camelot's We Love Golf will allow us to play a round as Apollo Justice, while other characters confirmed for the title include Chun Li (Street Fighter), Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 3), and Arthur (Ghouls 'n Ghosts). We can't comprehend how anybody would not want to play golf as Apollo Justice, but if you're not a fan of the bequiffed lawyer (weirdo), then Capcom has set up a poll on its official blog to ask readers which characters they'd most like to see in the U.S and European versions of the game.

You can vote for one female and one male character, with Cammy (Street Fighter), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Rouge (Power Stone), Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), and Ashley Graham (Resident Evil) making up the female category.

Meanwhile, the male list consists of Frank West (Dead Rising), Balrog (Street Fighter), Guy (Final Fight), Ken (Street Fighter), Dhalsim (Street Fighter), and Captain Commando (from, uh, Captain Commando). And yes, we know of at least one person who will be sorely disappointed with the lack of Zangief in that selection.

Apollo Justice loves golf

Tecmo's Swing Golf Pangya! 2nd Shot isn't the only game in town when it comes to playing cartoony golf with an avatar dressed as a video game character-- as long as that town is in Japan, and also one week in the future. For their Camelot-developed golf game We Love Golf, Capcom has made some classic Capcom attire available to the player. No, not Mega Man (as far as we know.)

Players will be able to hit the links (that's a golf term, right? "Hit the links"?) as Resident Evil 3's Jill Valentine, Ghouls 'n Ghosts's Arthur (in armor), Chun-Li, and the red-suited protagonist of the DS's Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Now there's absolutely no reason to play as yourself! Want to see conclusive evidence of these characters? Check the court records after the break.

Miis Love Golf (and triple bogeys, too)

Mii integration in games is something we've not seen enough of, particularly in third-party titles. Camelot's forthcoming We Love Golf is looking to change that, however, with publisher Capcom confirming the title will fully support the blobby little people, allowing us to ruin a perfectly good walk play eighteen holes as a rounded, chubbier version of ourselves.

It also means we'll be treated to the bizarre sight of permanently grinning Miis looking thoroughly chuffed about that triple bogey putt they just sank. Odd.

Anyhow, there's a dozen new screens in the gallery below.

An animated Wiimote loves golf, too

Nobody knows better how to use a controller than the controller itself. At least, that seems to be the principle Camelot is operating under: a Wiimote mascot character, Remocon-kun, acts as your guide in We Love Golf, teaching you how to swing properly.

While we find the way the A button has been pressed into service as a de facto mouth a little weird, we can't deny the simple fact that the Wiimote is as good a mascot for the Wii as any, instantly recognizable and iconic for the whole system. In that respect, Camelot is on to something. Whether that means that sticking arms on the Wiimote and making it a character, specifically, is a good idea is a matter of interpretation.

Camelot backspins I Love Golf onto Wii

We haven't heard much from Camelot Software -- the developer behind various Shining Force, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis titles -- ever since the company announced that it would be putting aside its Nintendo projects to focus on its online golf title for the PC, I Love Golf. The latest issue of Famitsu, however, announces that the Japanese developer will be porting the game to the Wii, retitling it Wii Love Golf.

Interestingly, Capcom will handle publishing for Wii Love Golf, leaving those of us who were hoping for another Mario-themed Sports RPG a little disappointed. Perhaps we'll still see appearances from Capcom's franchises, much like how Tecmo filled the cast of Super Swing Golf with Dead or Alive characters? Rockman gets equipped with five iron? Check out the Famitsu pages after the post break.

Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for the next Golden Sun.
