When Pong evolved, we got Breakout. When Breakout evolved, we got Arkanoid. Then, when Arkanoid evolved, we got ... Block Breaker Deluxe?
Not that we'd call Block Breaker Deluxe revolutionary in any way, even though it's fun to play. Take Breakout, slap on some tacky '80s visuals, then throw in '70s disco/porn music for good measure, and you pretty much know what to expect from Gameloft's WiiWare offering.
Not many pleasant things come to mind when someone says a word like Masteroids, so it's hard to think of any reason why anyone would want to name their game that. As it turns out, the Masteroids title sort of makes sense for this homebrew multiplayer clone of Asteroids.
Based on the classic Atari arcade game, Masteroids allows up to four players to jump into a game with their Wii remotes, Classic Controllers, or GameCube controllers. Settings are available to change the amount of lives each player starts with, the amount of bullets a player can fire, the amount of players, the game's difficulty, and whether team killing is allowed.
We were initially skeptical about whether or not the Wii could handle Asteroids' next-gen arcade graphics, but that extra GameCube must've made it possible!
Patents and trademarks -- who cares about 'em? Apparently not the people behind Vii, a Chinese Wii knock-off. The looks more like a papercraft Wii than the real thing (wait, that's an insult to brilliant papercraft perpetrators everywhere), but the controller is pretty similar. A French site spotted the Wii clone in a Chinese magazine and scanned the pages so that we could all shake our heads as one.
