House of the Dead: Overkill gets Euro release date, Collector's Edition

Sega will release The House of the Dead: Overkill in Europe next February, and there'll be an optional bonus at "selected retailers" for fans who preorder: this rad Collector's Edition. Arriving in a fetching minimalist slipcase (loving the authentic scuff marks), this will come bundled with a graphic novel that tells the stories of Agent Washington and Varla Gunns, and the events that lead up to the game.

Here's the downside: this sweet package has so far only been announced for PAL regions -- apart from Germany, obviously. Sucks to be Germany, eh? Hit up our gallery for a closer look at the comic's cover and a sample page.

Down at the Ranch with Penny Arcade

Is gazing at your precious Pokemans in glorified Pokémon display cabinet My Pokémon Ranch just not enough for you? Do you get sick of their cloying, sweet little faces? Do you yearn to see the little so-and-sos endure the same painful, hard knock life that you had to endure? Do you wish that once -- just once -- they were exposed to a slice of cruel, heartless reality?

If so, know that Gabe of Penny Arcade fame is right with you! Hit the picture on the right for the latest strip -- it's a corker.

'Thank you, Mario! But my dignity is in another castle!'

The first thing we should tell you about this (linked) comic is that it may be a little unsafe for some conservative workplaces, and perhaps a lot unsafe for anyone who never, ever wanted to think about the Mario crew in any sort of a sexualized manner.

R.K. Milholland of Something Positive has often used video game references, and his cynical take on geek fetishes has cropped up more and more often since one of the main characters founded a phone sex line for geeks called Nerdrotica -- and it's that company's web cam chat that spawned this horrific look at a fetish we never, ever wanted to consider.

Ever.

Iron Man game will include movie voices

Should you want to bring Hollywood straight into your living rooms (or basements, or bedrooms, or wherever your game systems are set up), then Sega's got your back. The company announced today that their upcoming Iron Man game will include the same actors from the movie -- well, three of them, at least.

Everyone's favorite player ladies' man, Tony Stark (aka Iron Man's alter ego), will of course be voiced by Robert Downey Jr. The other two celebs involved in the game are Terrence Howard (Jim Rhodes) and Shaun Toub (Yin-Sen).

We haven't spent much time talking about Iron Man on NWF, even though the game isn't that far off (early May). Is anyone looking forward to it? And if so, do you plan on getting it for your Wii over another console?

Friday Video: Go west, young Luke

Even though we've seen his games for other platforms, we're not too familiar with Lucky Luke. Perhaps some of our European readers can fill us in on whether or not we should learn more? He's been popping up everywhere this week, since a new Wii game featuring the comic book hero is in the media spotlight. Considering that, we thought it might be okay to put him in our spotlight, as well. We've also got a few screenshots for your perusal, which you can check out in the gallery below.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Dweebs

Not a day passes without some poor sap's waggling image being posted on Flickr or YouTube, their awkwardness immortalized for the world to see. Today's Penny Arcade comic is a cautionary tale for all the gamers out there who lose themselves in the Wii's heightened brand of immersion, flapping their hands and dressing in costume for that authentic experience.

With Harry Potter mania being at an all time high -- several video games, a new movie, and the final book all within a few weeks' reach -- we're at our most vulnerable. Guarding ourselves against these embarrassing exposures should be priority one. Remember that the next time you start riding your mother's broom during a mock Quidditch match and notice a red light blinking in one of the room's air vents.

The plant has his time

We've played through enough Super Mario Bros. games to have learned that no pipe should be approached without caution. After a lifetime of suffering piranha plant attacks, always at the least opportune moments, we've trained ourselves to scrutinize every green tube before hopping over it. We'll sit there for up to two minutes, staking out the pipe to make sure there isn't a hidden fly trap hoping to dupe us with its delayed pattern. Sometimes, we'll even see their eyes poking out, anxious to see why we haven't jumped yet.

These guys seem to pop up everywhere! In addition to their appearances in almost every Mario-related title over the past two decades, the piranha plants extended their roots to Tetris Attack and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening! They've also been spotted in last Wednesday's Extra Life comic, illustrated by the always-awesome Scott Johnson. It's a predictable punchline, but no less hilarious because of it. We implore you to check it out!

Wii Warm Up: On power

Reader Sean tipped us on this hilarious comic, and as the giggles subsided, we realized there were a few topics worth discussing here -- which makes it perfect for a Monday morning! One of the things that makes this comic funny is that the Wii-injury-inspired beheading is a metaphor for everything that's powering the Wii to such vast mountains of profit. It's not like those other consoles, and why should it be? Should all the next-gen consoles be the same, with roughly the same options? After all, while it may not have the processing power of the PS3 or 360, the Wii has a different kind of power: versatility and widespread appeal. This console has the potential to be so many things, and to expand the market. Why fight over the same market share when you can have some of that, and then go forth and create more?

After all ... people said the DS was underpowered and a gimmick, and just look at it now.

[Thanks, Sean!]

Whopping Wii remote comic

We played the "What if?" game with our friends a lot during our younger years. Our school playground was a montessori arena for cartwheels and slow motion kicks as we acted out, "What if we were Power Rangers?" Tired from our recess shenanigans, we would brood over notes we passed in class, wondering, "What if it rained candy? Seriously, wouldn't that be rad?" We eventually put the childish pastime behind us, realizing that it wasn't appropriate to ask our best friends, "What if I was a guy who wanted to date your sister?"

Buzz Beamer from Sports Illustrated Kids hasn't given up on the "What if?" game yet. In the magazine's latest comic, Buzz ruminates over the possibilities of an over-sized Wii remote. He comes up with some entertaining ideas like Virtual Log Riding and Tossing the Caber. Our favorite is the one where he has a "realistic" wrestling match with the giant remote. That's way cooler than the Hulk Hogan pillow we used to grapple with when we were kids!

Wii Warm Up: Comics and games

For some crazy reason, the Wii has come up quite a bit in webcomics since the name was officially announced. Part of that is simply due to the fact that gaming is such a popular subject in online comics, and the rest ... well, we think it may have something to do with the name. Just a guess.

What are some of your favorite gaming comics? How've you felt about some of the Wii comics so far? Do you have any favorites to share?

Wii gets the comic treatment

Oh snap! A Wii-centric comic? And apparently all about the, ah, immersive aspects of the console. Raise your hand if you think this may be you in a few weeks?

As a side note, in no way do we encourage anyone to actually stab, choke, prod or cut family members or friends with any portion of the Nintendo Wii. Dude, you might get blood on it. Not at all cool. It stains.

[Thanks, Nikolai!]
