July NPD numbers show Nintendo Wii at the top

It just doesn't stop!

Nintendo rocks the house yet again, almost doubling its nearest competitors' consoles sold. Seriously, Nintendo did really well last month, so without further delay, let's hit up the numbers.

Hardware sales for July:
  • Nintendo Wii: 425K
  • Nintendo DS: 405K
  • Sony PlayStation 2: 222K
  • Sony PSP: 214K
  • Microsoft Xbox 360: 170K
  • Sony PlayStation 3: 159K
  • Nintendo GBA: 87K
Software sales for July:
  1. NCAA Football 08 (Xbox 360) -- 397K
  2. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80's (PS2) -- 339K
  3. Wii Play w/remote (Wii) -- 278K
  4. NCAA Football 08 (PS2) -- 236K
  5. Mario Party 8 (Wii) -- 177K
  6. NCAA Football 08 (PS3) -- 156K
  7. Pokémon Diamond (DS) -- 144K
  8. Transformers: The Game (PS2) -- 143K
  9. Guiitar Hero II w/guitar (PS2) -- 138K
  10. Guitar Hero II w/guitar (Xbox 360) -- 108K

Wii beats Xbox 360 in total consoles sold

Today is being marked as the official day that the Wii overtook the Xbox 360 in total console sales. As you can see above, the console is still losing in the U.S. market, however due to its popularity in Japan, was able to edge out the Xbox 360 and claim the top spot. With the console releasing last November, its continued shortages only make this feat that much more impressive.

Wii sells over 9 million, 1 million behind Xbox 360

According to the latest figures over at VG Chartz, the Wii has sold over 9 million worldwide. This puts it just shy of current top dog, the Xbox 360, by little over 1 million units and above the third place Sony PS3 by about 5 million. Unlike the Xbox 360, however, is the Wii's customer base, which shares healthy mix of Japanese and U.S. owners.

So, are we placing bets on when the Wii will surpass Microsoft's console?
