Tallyho, guv'na -- UK Smash Showdown at Gamestation

If you like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and you happen to live in the UK, then this announcement might have some kind of connection with you. Twenty Gamestation stores across the nation will each be hosting a 64-person Super Smash Bros. Showdown on June 28. This is no slouchy, bored-marketing-guy tournament either. Every winner from every store will take home a 40" Samsung LCD TV and a Samsung Home Theater System, with all the DVD and surround sound trimmings.

Tournaments are great and all, but this one is really something else. The prizes are actually extremely good, and you only need to win six matches to take home the grand prize. Only one Fanboy blogger lives in the UK, but fortunately he is awful at Brawl. In fact, he doesn't even own the game. Or pants.

Register for your local tournament at the official website -- it's probably going to fill up fast, so make like a tree and hurry.

Wii-based physical therapy not just for Americans any more

If you were someone not living in the confines of North America, you might have thought we were all going crazy over here, throwing the old physical therapy ways out the window and openly embracing new, Wii-based solutions that might not be totally tested. But hey, we're not complaining, if the people say it helps, then we're all for it.

Well, England is finally getting with the times, as the Wii is being used in physiotherapy for some in the south-east portion of the country. Specifically, at Queen Victoria NHS Foundation Trust in East Grinstead, where Maureen Adams, the head of therapy, comments that when "recovering from an operation, such as a skin graft, patients may need recover normal use of their hands and arms. Using the Wii is a way of significantly improving movement, while not seeing the activity as therapy, which helps motivate them. Wii can also be done at home, so patients are able to continue their own personal therapies."

Basically, they're using it for all the same reasons as other folk have been using it. And hey, any way to help these folks regain movement and rebuild their physical selves, we're down with it.

Illegal immigrants in the UK get to have fun with Wii before being shipped off

If any of you have seen that film Children of Men, you probably noticed the horrible treatment this imaginary England of the future imposed on illegal immigrants. Well, it just might be the opposite here in reality, as word hits that deportees in detainment get some play time with Nintendo's latest console before being shipped off.

These detainees are currently shacked up at Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre in Berkshire, where they enjoy a TV in every cell and some other amenities (we wonder if they're giving each other tats). This is, of course, questionable, as to whether these folk deserve such luxuries is obviously cause for debate. It's even being reported that some of the folks here are rapists and murderers.

Have a pint and a go at Wii Sports

Now, if we were combining beverage time with Wii time, the product would probably be what you see to your right there. We have horrible coordination and the combination of alcohol into the mix would mean that we'd either spill our drink into our Wii or fall on it. That's just how we're built.

You folks in England, however, have a bit more in the alcoholic coordination department, as playing the Wii has become the new "it" activity in the pub. It has inspired Team Europe, a company who manages Poker tournaments in pubs, to start up a similar tournament across pubs for the Wii. And, you can even find some tournaments going on right now, on a regular basis in London, should you be the type of person who enjoys immediate action. In fact, one such pub hosts a Wii tournament every Wednesday and enjoys a lot of support from the 30 or so players that show up for the event.

This is just another example of the wonderful social aspect of the console, if you ask us.

January sales ahoy! A trio of Wii bargains for Brits

Got your new Wii set up, UK gamers? Congrats! Now all you need to do is treat it correctly grab some games for the lil' guy, and with the January sales kicking off today, finding bargains shouldn't be too taxing. GAME has just announced the contents of its sale, and as usual it's a matter of carefully locating the gems lost in a vast ocean of crappy shovelware. We took some time out to sift through the trash and found three sparkling additions for your library:
Admittedly, thirty quid for the charming Eledees is still a little steep, but Mercury Meltdown Revolution for £17.99 is an absolute snip.

Japanese hardware sales, Jun. 4 - Jun. 10: Harry Potter edition

Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsThe final release of Harry Potter, one of the most widespread, wonderful literary series ever written, is coming to a close come July 21st. We'd like to take a moment and salute J. K. Rowling for reintroducing the better part of a world to the joys of reading, because hey, if no one read, we'd be out of our jobs. Pick up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as soon as you can, guys. Trust us.

Harry Potter and the Japanese Hardware Sales

"Harry," said Ron, slightly out of breath, "Snape'll go nutters if we're late again. Remember what he did to Neville?"

"Yeah," replied Harry, throwing himself down a shifting staircase and sprinting through the corridors. Snape had used a particularly nasty hex on the frequently tardy Neville, turning his hands into N-Gages. Harry allowed himself a momentary shudder.

They rounded a corner and began the descent into Snape's dungeon of a classroom, Harry's least favorite place at Hogwarts. Even disregarding his immense dislike of Severus Snape, Harry had never had much of a knack for Potions; it was always his lowest grade of the term.

Suddenly, Ron stopped dead ahead of him. Harry slammed into his back, nearly toppling the two down the hard, stone stairs.

Wii storms the UK

Here's the news you're going to read everywhere this week: in the first 12 hours of Wiiday in the UK, Nintendo sold more than one console every second. Those are some really fast cashiers!

But as with everything, there's a downside. Preorders languish unfilled in the UK, and we still haven't seen firm numbers on how many units were shipped to that area, much less the rest of Europe, so we're unable to yet fully measure Nintendo's European coup. David Yarnton, Ninty's man on the ground in England, says that they are working hard to meet demand ... but if the shortages elsewhere are any indication, a lot of Brits will be waiting weeks Wii-free. We're guessing there's a lot of available overtime at a few factories these days ....

(Mostly) complete list of Wii tour stops in Europe

We know this is going to come as a big surprise to our friends in Europe, but you guys are getting something a little later than the United States. Try to pick your jaws up off the floor, guys. We know it's a shock. But hey, at least it isn't months later, right? And you guys get to miss out on the pain of Hawthorne Heights. That's right, you get an emo-free Wii Tour!

We only have dates for Western Europe -- Scotland, Ireland, England -- but if anyone knows about the Wii sweeping through the rest of the region, let us know. Full list of available dates after the jump.

Wii preorders flood UK's Play.com

According to the Guardian Unlimited, the UK site Play.com has been awash in Wii preorders -- 7000 in the first nine days, making it the "biggest and quickest launch ever on the site." With months to go yet until the console's release (December 8 in Europe), people are already jumping to reserve a Wii. In the vacuum left by Sony's decision to delay the PS3 in Europe, it looks like the Wii's going to be a little popular.

And, inadvertently, the Guardian reminds us why Wii Sports has been bundled with the console to push units outside gamer markets. In an attempt to explain what the Wii is and what can be done with it, they said, "you can play tennis, golf, or baseball, you can bowl or box or play something called Zelda Hands-on, which is a sword fighting game." The uh, emphasis would be ours. When you hit Play.com to reserve your Wii, don't forget Zelda Hands-on. We hear it's a real winner.

UK preorders are a go

PC World, the self-styled "Largest Computer Superstore" for the UK (we're impressed) has started taking preorders for the Wii -- and they're offering a nice bundle pack. We hope to see similar offerings on this side of the Atlantic, because this is just too good to pass up. The basic console weighs in at £179.99, and there's an option for a Wii with a second controller (but no nunchuk) for £199.99. For those not too savvy with the conversion of currency, don't let those seemingly low numbers fool you -- our pals in the UK are paying nearly $400 in US dollars for the privilege of a console and a second Wiimote.

And then there are the bundles. Super Monkey Ball seems to be the order of the day; it's included in two of the three bundle options on PC World's site. You can choose either Red Steel or Twilight Princess to offset your monkey mayhem, and both bundles include the second Wiimote, and all for £259.99, only sixty pounds more than the console plus extra controller. The third bundle includes Wario Ware: Smooth Moves and Need for Speed: Carbon, as well as the extra controller. PC World promises free delivery with any of these preorders (which is a nice bonus), but doesn't guarantee delivery at launch (which isn't nice at all). Keep us posted on other preorder packs and bonuses, and we'll compare and contrast.
