VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 10/8/07

While normally we'd have some more coverage for you past the post break, we can't possibly do that for you. Sorry, but if you watched the above video, you'd understand why we couldn't play enough of each of the games to come to a determination as to whether they're worth downloading or not. Actually, as it stands right now, they aren't worth downloading until Nintendo has worked the kinks out.

Oh, how there are kinks ...

VC Monday Madness: All hail the NEOGEO

Finally, the NEOGEO makes a huge splash on the Virtual Console, offering up three different top notch titles to download. Wallets will be beaten to a pulp, their contents spilled all over the ground and quickly sucked up by Nintendo as each of these NEOGEO games will require a $9 entrance fee. And, with three different games available, that's a lot of scratch for some retro gaming goodness.

This week's games are:
  • Fatal Fury (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
  • World Heroes (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
  • Art of Fighting (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
As always, be sure to check back later for our video wrap-up of this week's offerings.

More Japanese VC updates: Fatal Fury, Thursday bonuses

Fatal Fury was released on the Japanese Virtual Console yesterday-- the release wasn't shown at the time we were writing the VC Tuesday update, so we missed it. We thought we'd give it a mention because it's the first Neo Geo game on the Virtual Console!

In addition to stuff that already came out that we didn't get to write about, Japan gets some bonus VC material tomorrow of the highest caliber. Super Metroid and Sin and Punishment are being released tomorrow, both of which should make up nicely for Super Thunder Blade.

Say, now that PAL regions have their Hanabi Festival and Japan has surprise Thursday games, you know what would be great? Some VC bonus stuff in America.

[Thanks for pointing out Fatal Fury, Almadi!]

Neo Geo launch on the VC delayed in Japan

If you like to follow Japan's Virtual Console releases, you may have noticed a severe lack of Fatal Fury in that list of games. As today was supposed to be the day the Wii's Virtual Console was to receive Neo Geo titles in Japan, many are wondering just what the deal is. And, with the complete lack of news from Nintendo or SNK regarding the matter, many are wondering if the launch of a new system will even be going down this week at all.

Any of our Japanese readers finding this news particularly upsetting?

Neo Geo games finally coming to the Virtual Console (in Japan)

This is something we've been looking forward to for a long time. World Heroes, Magician Lord, and Fatal Fury will be released at some time in September, at a cost of 900 Wii Points each. Well, we haven't been so much looking forward to World Heroes, and the Fatal Fury collection just came out on PS2 for $15. But, as usual, we're looking to the future! We're thinking about the time when we're able to download Mark of the Wolves and play it with our Hori Fighting Stick. We're also looking forward to whatever comes out that we haven't played.

September's not going to be all Neo Geo games. Check out what's on the way to the Japanese download service after the break. You'll be really jealous.

Virtually Overlooked Week: JC's picks

Virtually Overlooked has taken over Wii Fanboy! All this week, members of the staff will be outlining their personal picks for future Virtual Console releases.
Everyone can guess how my childhood was spent, since I talk about old games constantly. So, instead of relating a nostalgic anecdote for you, I'm going to use this intro space to tell you about the last week or so.

When I'm not personally advancing the cause of random old games on next-generation consoles, I'm a full-time grad student at the University of North Texas, working on a master's degree in library science. From last Thursday until yesterday, I was in the midst of my capstone-- a seven-day marathon paper-writing session meant to be the final test of my suitability as a librarian. My wife and I were also preparing to move from Texas to Washington, which happened this Saturday. Add my regular coursework and job responsibilities to that, and, as you can imagine, I've been a complete wreck. My Fanboy colleagues are probably rolling their eyes right now as I complain again about my workload, but I feel like it was a pretty significant experience, one I hope never to repeat.

I am now safely ensconced in a Washingtonian apartment, and I turned in my last essay in the early hours of Thursday morning. Getting a chance to write about a bunch of old games is like a vacation. I've been looking forward to this all week.

Since this is a VO special week, I'm taking the opportunity to talk about more mainstream games than I usually cover. So there's a better chance that you guys have played this stuff, and we can all share in some retro-euphoria.

SNK bringing Art of Fighting Anthology to Wii?

Our network of crow spies have reported to us that the mountain pass is blocked, enemy troops are amassing at our eastern border, and Art of Fighting Anthology for the Wii has been spotted on the ESRB's list of future releases. Eager to learn more about any possible wartime advantages, we've consigned a scout to gather more information on SNK's 2D fighter.

The Art of Fighting Anthology collects the entire Neo Geo trilogy of releases (Art of Fighting, Art of Fighting 2, and The Path of the Warrior: Art of Fighting 3). 33-characters strong, the anthology will feature series hallmarks like spirit gauges, desperation attacks, and a graphical-scaling camera system. It hasn't been revealed yet how the Wii's unique controls will be used, but we hope it won't turn out to be a debacle like Metal Slug Anthology's implementation.

With hints of a Wii port accompanying Art of Fighting Anthology's PS2 and PSP releases, could this also mean that SNK's Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Volume 1 might have a version for our fair console too? And how long will it be until we see some Neo Geo games like Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Neo Turf Masters on Nintendo's Shopping Channel? Jump past the post break for a showcase of super moves from Art of Fighting 2.
