Virtual Console: Online features are for suckers

During the same conference call with Reggie, the notion for online features in Virtual Console games came up. And, like a huge megaton hammer, Reggie came crashing down on the notion with enough force as to completely shatter each and every dream we'd ever had, from ridiculous to surprisingly plausible. It's a shame, because it wouldn't be that hard to give us something so small as online leaderboards.

For those of you looking forward to updates to these past titles, much like the norm on the Xbox Live Arcade, grab a box of Kleenex and sit with us. It's just not going to happen. It's okay, cry. Let it out. We're here with you, doing the same.

Mii Spotlight: A look ahead

We're taking a break this week from our usual Mii Spotlight format to discuss the future of Miis, including the forthcoming Mii-focused channel, and what we would like to see in the way of updates to the Mii creation process. We hope you don't mind ... and anyway, we're short on Miis! We can only guess you guys were far too busy immersing yourselves bodily in E3 videos and news to create any new little people this week.

But no worries! Not only will we have new and interesting ways in which to wield our Miis in the near future, games like MySims seem to be running with the super-cute avatar idea, and soon we'll be able to expand our tiny armies of near-lookalikes to epic proportions. Miis even turn up in Wii Fit, though there it seems they must do battle with faceless VR mannequins who threaten to take over our exercise plans.

Actually, Miis v. Mannequins could be an excellent game inside Wii Fit. Too bad we're mostly sure it isn't included. We do love our cartoon violence ... perhaps a little too much.

Revolutionary: Introducing GlovePIE

Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

The Wii Remote is destined to go down in history as one of those revolutionary advancements that forever changed video gaming. But with the game industry being a business first and foremost, developers are often pigeonholed into sticking with what's proven to work and sell. In recent years, it has been primarily left to the small developers to deliver the big innovations and take the big risks, and homebrew communities are becoming a breeding ground for bucket-loads of innovative gaming experiences.

There is a growing community of hobbyists and weekend coders that are grabbing their Wiimotes and Nunchuks and working to virtually wring out every last drop of potential in these unique new interfacing devices. I'd like to welcome you into that community and give you the tools and resources to start enjoying the fruits of their labors, and even get involved in the creative process.

Wii round-up: then and now

The last two days have been nothing but an avalanche of Wii news. We got release dates, territory pricing, and some new features all dropped on our laps. We're full, stuffed to the brim from the delicious smorgasbord of news. We're going to have to undo our belt, if you don't mind...

So in all the excitement, has anyone ever checked past Nintendo promises in regard to the Wii to ensure that our beloved gaming company is providing us with truthful, accurate information? One blogger over at Joystiq, our good friend Ludwig, has done just that. The results show that Nintendo, like another gaming company who made a few promises, failed to deliver.

Our favorite burn from the article:

Then:
In March 2006, Satoru Iwata tells CNN all about the USB ports on the Wii and how "practically any storage method can be used" in lieu of SD cards and the 512MB of internal storage.
Now: Perrin Kaplan empties her Magnum into that idea, telling Wired News' Joel Johnson that only flash storage will be supported. Iwata's suggestion becomes relegated to something Nintendo "could" explore in the future. This "future" place we keep hearing about sounds fantastic.

Head on over and give it a read.
