Iwata: Friend codes aren't perfect (Us: Duh)

You know you hate them. No matter how much you love Nintendo, there's no way you can justify those vile things known as friend codes.

Nintendo (the company) might not despise them as much as we do (or at all), but at least some of the higher-ups are willing to acknowledge that they're not the best EVAR. In fact, you really don't get much higher up than President Satoru Iwata, who recently admitted in an interview with GameDaily that the friend code system isn't perfect. He then spouted the usual company line when he said, "However, if it's an online world where you can get access to anybody without any restrictions, I as a father do not feel like allowing my daughter be engaged in that kind of world."

Iwata said that the purpose of friend codes is to create a harassment-free environment for people less familiar with online video gaming, but we can't help but feel like friend codes are a different kind of harassment that tirelessly bothers those who are experienced online gamers. The prez also said that the company is working on improving the system, though, while keeping it safe.

Wii Fanboy presents: A curious lack of Game Night

With JC and Dave in LA for E3, and the rest of us scrambling about to pick up the pieces, this week's Game Night is a no go -- at least for us. However, the chat room is still there, just for you, in case you want to get together with some other fanfolk and play games (or perhaps discuss a few things).

Next week, everything should be back to normal!

Update: The staff has vacated the Game Night chat, but plenty of folks were still in there when we left, gaming it up. So, why not join them?

It's Thursday, which means that we've got some space on our calendar clear to get our game on. Whether it's online compatible Wii or DS games, we're going to kick back and enjoy our Nintendo systems with you, fine reader. Care to join us? It's easy!

Show up at the site around 7pm ET tonight. You'll see this post at the top of the front page, including a link into the chat where we all get together to hang out while playing. That's it! No muss, no fuss! So, can we count on you being there tonight?

Update 2: The staff have left Game Night now, but there are still plenty of people about, looking to get their game on. Access the chatroom here and join in!

Following last week's great turnout, we're expecting a lot of you folk to show up to Game Night tonight. Hey, what else are you going to do? Nothing better, we can assure you! Besides, if you live in the U.S., you're likely to have tomorrow off, which means you can spend a few hours gaming with us!

So, pop back in this post around 7pm tonight and you'll see a link to the Game Night chat. This post will then be at the top of the front page. If you don't have any games, that's fine. Just come chat with us anyway!

We figured it was time we whipped up another promo video showing what you're missing at Game Night. Last week, I played a bunch of Mario Kart Wii and used some clips from my play sessions to comprise the video above. Hopefully, you'll like it, and it'll get you to attend with us. How do you do that?

Update: The staff has left the Game Night chat, but even though the staff is not present, the readers game on without us. Head on in and give your games a little TLC!

It's Thursday! Why are we so excited for the day before Friday? Well, it's the one time a week we can get together with you, fine reader, and throw down in the best online-compatible games the Wii and DS libraries have to offer. Exciting, right? We think so!

Joining us is incredibly easy. All you have to do is show up at the site, here, at 7pm Eastern Time. If you see this post at the top of the page, you'll find a link in it that takes you to the Game Night chat. If you don't see this post at the top of the page, keep refreshing.

Ah, Thursday. You know what that means? It means we finally get a break from all of the work so that we may site down and enjoy some games with our friends in the community (that's you, the person reading this right now). What should we play tonight? The choices, there are so many!

If you're new to the whole thing, then get schooled. If you've attended Game Night in the past and decided to drop out, we ask you give it one more chance. If you never attended, it's easy! Update: The staff have gone and left the Game Night chat. But, that shouldn't stop you from checking on its status now. There might be people in there righting now, trying to play.

Oh boy, we're so giddy it's Thursday. Finally, we get to take a break from the usual and do what we love to do best: play some games! if this is all new to you, may we suggest hitting up our Game Night intro page? It's chock full of handy information on how to get involved with Game Night.

So, basically, just show up here at the site around 7pm ET tonight. You'll find this post at the top of the page (if it isn't at the top, keep refreshing the page). Within will be a link, to the chat, which you only need click. Once done, you're in. Simple, right?

Why, hello there! Are you ready to get your game on? It's Thursday, so you know how we like to get together and enjoy some of the wonderful online-enabled titles in Nintendo's roster. These games include Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and, of course, Mario Kart Wii. If you have a Wii game that can go online, odds are you will find someone to play with. And, hey, that someone could be one of us here on staff!

Update: The staff have left the Game Night chat, but when we did, things were kicking. Hop into the chat and see what's going down. You just might be able to get a game or two in.

It's Thursday, which can mean only one thing: Game Night is upon us. We hope you have some fresh batteries in your Wiimote, because we're ready to play! What about you? Willing to play a little Mario Kart Wii or Smash Bros. Brawl with us? We also like to rock the Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, if a FPS is more your style. No matter what you want to play, just show up!

Update: Nintendo's servers are being a pain again tonight, dropping everyone left and right. Sorry, but the staff has left the Game Night chat. We didn't want to, but the problematic servers caused us to. If you're around later, still give the chat a try, maybe some folks are lingering and the servers got back to operating status.

If you weren't here last week, you missed quite the amount of fun. For yours truly (and Chris), Mario Kart Wii was kicking it in full force. Sure, other people got their Brawl on, as well as the requisite Medal of Honor: Heroes 2. We were gaming it up like crazy!

So, why weren't you there? No matter, save your excuses, because you can make up for it by showing up tonight! That's right, just come back to the site at 7:01PM ET and you'll see this post at the top of the page. Then, it'll have a link to the Game Night chat. We hope to see you at Game Night tonight! Update: The staff has left the Game Night chat, however there were tons of folks still in there, getting their game on. Try your luck by entering the chat here.

Last week, those of you that showed up to Game Night shared in our dismay. Nintendo's servers were down and we were forced to just hang around and chat. Chatting is all well and good, but when you only get like an hour to play games during the week, you really look forward to that hour.

We're hoping that tonight is not a repeat performance and are fairly certain that everything should be in excellent operating condition. So come back here around 7pm ET tonight to get the link into the Game Night chat. After that, you should be brawling and racing with your fellow readers (and us!) in no time.

Update: Well, this is no fun. It seems that Wi-Fi is down right now. If you want, you can still join us in the chat for some fun conversation (and a game, if the servers get back up). Hopefully that won't take too long.

Update 2: Well, this is lame. The servers are still down and we have no idea how long it will be until they are back online. We would like to thank all the folks that showed up looking to game with us. We'll see you next week, where the servers will be working, hopefully!

Wait, what is this? Why, there's a video in a Game Night post?

Well, after last week's play session, the nameless, faceless robots that run people here at Wii Fanboy whipped up the above video to show some of the shy folks and those who might have had no clue about what Game Night is what they're missing. So go ahead and click play, we'll wait.

Okay, done? Good. Yes, it was kind of long, but we wanted to cram as much game footage in as possible. With Mario Kart Wii having just released this week, you can bet that many will be trying to rock that tonight. So, if you picked it up, join us.
