RIP: Smash Bros. Dojo

The Smash Bros. Dojo has been with us for so long, offering daily glimpses into one of the Wii's most anticipated titles, but as of yesterday, the blog is no longer updating. Where will we turn now for our daily fix? Oh, we could play the game, sure (at least, those of us not in Europe; sorry, folks), but Masahiro Sakurai's informative, enthusiastic posts gave us the tools we needed to succeed and grow as people (and, uh, players). It's like losing a friend.

In honor of our months with the dojo, the Wii Fanboy staff got together and prepared a gallery collecting some of our favorite reveals, so that we can relive the experience one last time. Can someone pass the tissue? We're having a moment here.

Additions to your Baroque flipbook

We've gotten a peek at so many screens from Baroque that we're ready to hijack someone's posh color printer and start making our own little flipbook. We hear that if you turn the pages at just the right speed, you can see Creepy Bastards and Emo Mummies in full motion. Sure, we could pick up the manga, but we're shooting for creativity here. Try not to stifle the process.

In other news, we have seen a gushing floodwater of media from this title. Go ahead -- check it out in the updated gallery.

New Baroque screens blazing forth

Atlus doesn't want you to forget about Baroque, and we don't, either. Clichés like amnesia and world-saving aside, the dark RPG sounds -- and looks -- really fascinating, and we can only hope it delivers. For now, however, we're delivering up some new screenshots, courtesy of Atlus, showing off some battle footage, as well as the support character, the Baroquemonger. Despite his onscreen discussion about customers, he does not ask, "What are you buying?" We're sad.

We've added a ton of character images for you to check out, too. The artistic design for Baroque is really setting a high standard -- we can't wait to see the final product!

Check out our new gallery system

Well folks, the improvement train has unloaded its wares at the Wii Fanboy station, providing us with a sweet new gallery system. If you read Joystiq, then this will be one of the oldest and dustiest hats you've ever seen (or worn, for that matter), as they've had this system in place for quite some time now. But hey, it's new to us and we're happy to dine on the scraps off Joystiq's plate!

So, what's new?
  • As you can see above, you may now comment on individual photos in the gallery
  • You may now view photos in two distinct flavors: low-res and hi-res, allowing those of you with teh 56K to cruise around in our galleries and not worry about your computer blowing up
  • We can now add captions on each individual photo in the gallery, allowing us to explain (when needed) what you're looking at and why it's interesting (to us, anyway)
  • The color design of the gallery has also changed to an all-black affair, so hopefully that's better on your eyes than the all-white approach our galleries took before
That about covers it. I've gone ahead and embedded a gallery below for you all to thumb through so you can see how the new gallery system plays out. Hopefully you'll all find it to be as much of an improvement over the last system as we have.

A few Baroque screens to darken your day

Baroque may have experienced a few delays, but it's still on the way, as evidenced by the screens in our spiffy new gallery. Or perhaps we should say new-ish, because we've seen a couple of them before in blurry, muddied forms, and now they're crisp, clean, and much more attractive. We're happy to be reminded of this title, and happier still that it was pushed back so as not to compete with Super Smash Bros. Brawl; after all, we want more RPGs on the Wii, not fewer, and if Baroque does well, it might help developers to realize that there are more than just casual gamers among the Wii's audience.

Where did you go, Samurai Warriors?

Koei's Samurai Warriors Katana released earlier this month in the U.S. to a distinct lack of fanfare, and next month, European gamers will get their shot at the action title. Last August, the game sure sounded like it had potential, so what happened between then and now that resulted in an average score of 53 on Metacritic? Apparently "fun" is as far as the concept went, and many other elements were left unpolished. Still, the reviews are not all bad, and the screens didn't make any of the staff at Wii Fanboy vomit on their shoes, so it might be worth keeping an eye out for the inevitable markdowns that are sure to come in a few weeks.

Relax with a little Bass Fishing

A few new screens from the upcoming Sega Bass Fishing have surfaced, showcasing this idyllic location, as well as something a little more important to gameplay: fish! Frankly, this whole thing has us hankering for a vacation. A picnic on that lawn, a little fishing, some leisurely walks around the grounds ... anyone else feeling it? You can sign on for this virtual vacation late next month.

And then there were screens

When Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None was first adapted into an adventure game for the PC, reactions were all over the place. Some people hated the look, criticizing everything, whereas others found the environments detailed and suitable to the story and setting, while admitting the character models could use some work. Some loved the gameplay, puzzles, and voice acting, and others criticized those same elements. Reviews on Metacritic swing from 90 down to an embarrassing 31, and the user ratings vary even more wildly. However, one thing that was generally lauded was the immersive story, and that should be complete when the game hits the Wii next month, along with all-new motion controls for the port.

This blogger actually recently picked up the book after many recommendations, and must admit a small amount of interest in the budget title based on being about a third of the way into the novel. It seems like the sort of thing that might interest the wider Wii audience, certainly, but if the reaction is similar to the one the PC game garnered, there's no telling whether or not this game will disappear immediately. Until then, however, we'll just have to check out the screens, which we've got in the gallery below.

Pull in some Bass Fishing screens

We're often anti-port, but it's hard to dislike a port that offers loads of extra content (by way of several new locales), enhanced gameplay, and good, plain fun ... all of which it looks like we're going to get with Sega Bass Fishing. In case you're unconvinced, we've got some freshly scaled screens for you in our gallery below, and a heavy dose of nostalgia we're happy to share. We may not have the Dreamcast's fishing controller, but we have the memories.

Get in here and check out these Bully screens

What can we say? We like you too much to force you to check out these Wii-specific images from the upcoming Bully: Scholarship Edition, but we thought you might just enjoy them. If we had cookies, we'd give you one, but you'll just have to settle for the screenshots. Port or not, it's still somewhat exciting to see Rockstar taking a continued interest in the Wii. We can't wait to see what they do next.

Wii gamers need more common sense

If you were hoping to get a crack at Otona No Joushikiryoku Training DS, well, too bad. That's one DS training game that isn't yet on board for an English-language release, but it does seem to be headed toward the Wii ... at least, in Japan. The non-game focuses not on common sense as we often colloquially use the phrase, but more on "general knowledge." For example, in the above screen, players are asked to locate the Caribbean Sea. From some of the other screens (handily included in our gallery below), we can see that the title focuses on a variety of skills and knowledges that are useful, from tying a tie to cultural information.

Perhaps the Wii title will have a better chance of crossing the globe, considering the ever-expanding casual market, but for now, we'll have to settle for a little free translation training from the kanji-heavy screens.

The Wii version heads out to Japan in March.

Screens of the Dead return

Surely you know what House of the Dead looks like, right? If not, skedaddle into our gallery to see what you'll be shooting come March. If, like all sane people (we forgive the insane among you, because we're kind), you're totally familiar with the series and the forthcoming House of the Dead 2&3 Return, then just kick back and enjoy the screens. The undead don't have to be pretty. We just need a lot of them, and since we're getting two games for the price of one budget port, we're as happy as violent little lambs.

Dream a little dream of pinball

Sure, the kinds of things that usually come to mind when we think about the Wii's motion controls are shooting and fighting, or maybe dancing around like loons. But as soon as someone whispered, "hey, man, pinball," in our little ears, we thought .... well, yeah. We could do that. You could hold the remote and nunchuk just as though you were at a machine, and if there's nothing to kick, well, hire a friend to stand nearby or just move the table over for those moments of frustration.

These shots of Dream Pinball 3D aren't the best looking things we've ever seen, but what we're interested in now is seeing it in motion. The title promises great ball physics, and isn't that what really matters? We've played some pretty shady pinball machines in our day, all boobs and hobbits, and the backdrop only mattered so far as how it affected the game. We'll be keeping an eye on this one, because if done well, it could be worth a play or three.

Some more updates for No More Heroes

A mix of new and old screenshots from No More Heroes burst from the ether this week, and since we can't resist anything starring our favorite anti-hero, Travis Touchdown, we've updated our gallery. So many of the screens and video we've seen from this title have been small or short or marred with watermarks that our raving obsession with everything No More Heroes is a true testament to Suda's unique vision. Come drool with us -- the waiting is almost over.

New shots from The Young King and the Promised Land

The site for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Young King and the Promised Land seems to be doing frequent updates -- possibly every day, but we'll see how long that lasts -- and that means we've got new and tiny screenshots of the Wii Ware title that you can find in our gallery below. And speaking of titles, that one ain't getting any shorter. Geez.

In other news, there was a rumor in the recent issue of EGM about the fate of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, and it's sadly looking like there might be some truth to the notion that the game is "in trouble." There's a button on The Young King's site that leads to Ring of Fates news, but nothing about that other, lost title. We're sad. Mark us down as sad, like pandas what are sad. At least we have all this other Final Fantasy goodness to tide us over.
