Strong Bad freezing? Take your Wii out of widescreen display mode

We haven't heard much in the way of problems with Telltale's newest episodic game, Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. One of our incredibly handsome commenters had some other kind of issue, but it's nothing like what ThatVideoGameBlog is reporting.

Apparently, at the same spot in the episode, the whole game would freeze, locking up the console. Others over at the Telltale forums were reporting the same issue, yet they found a fix: take the console out of widescreen display mode and set it to standard (also suggested is turning off 480p and setting the system to 480i). This seems to correct the issue, yet means gamers will have to put up with some black bars on outside of the screen and none of that delicious progressive scan all the kids are crazy about. Until Telltale can patch the game, it looks like this is the only fix for those suffering from freezing.

Strong Bad's Game for Attractive People isn't the only notable WiiWare title. Capcom's upcoming Mega Man 9 has managed to turn a few heads (and might have even gotten other companies to think about retro revivals). There's also the upcoming Tetris Party and Alien Crush Returns, both from Hudson. Oh, and let's not forget Space Invaders Get Even!

Fatal Frame IV plagued with bugs

We've been riding the Fatal Frame IV hype train as enthusiastically as any other site in recent months. The Tecmo/Grasshopper Manufacture crossover has long looked beautiful, engrossing, and hiding-behind-the-sofa scary. Furthermore, it's being published by Nintendo, which more or less guarantees a good time, right?

Wrong.

The game released in Japan last Thursday, meaning early importers are just now getting their copies in, and already several new owners are complaining about a host of collision detection issues, unselectable menu options, a ghost database that doesn't record all ghosts, and -- far more depressingly -- a game-freezing bug. Nintendo is acknowledging the glitches, and has released a statement featuring advice on how to best cope with them. We'll just have to hope some of this mess is cleared up when (and if) the game comes to the west.

Friday Video: Character glitching in Mario Kart Wii

All of you out there getting their race on with Mario Kart Wii (hop online and play with us some time!), have you ever wanted to use a certain character, only to have your friend quickly select them like a dumb jerk? Well, now you both can be Princess Peach without starting a fight. Pulling off the glitch is incredibly easy, as you'll see in the video above.

Glitching with ghosts in Mario Kart Wii

Well, folks, the game we're all looking forward to might not be so perfect after all. Now, while the glitch itself works 100%, it seems that Nintendo is mindful of it and removing the faulty times from the leaderboards. So, at least the cheaters aren't getting the credit they so badly want.

Rumor: Brawl rewrites history

And no, not in the way you would expect Brawl to rewrite history. Instead, forum posters over at NSider2 have (allegedly) discovered an unusual glitch in replays of their fights, namely that said replays are showing totally different fights. While the characters and stage remain the same, the moves being executed and the eventual victor are often different.

To demonstrate this, NSider2 member Warchamp7 uploaded a video of the glitch in action (which he finds "very scary"), and the replays do seem to vary. Barmy stuff. So far, this has only occurred on a particular custom-made stage, and not on any of the game's default, Nintendo-themed levels.

Due to the wonders of video-editing and it being that time of year again, we're marking this down as a rumor, but has anyone here encountered similar issues?

Super Glitch Bros. Brawl

Well, that was fast.

Turns out, some have already found a pretty big glitch in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. While we'll say it involves a certain character (not the one pictured above) on a certain stage, we won't ruin anything else for you. Those looking to stay pure from all of the spoilers that are on the net for Super Smash Bros. Brawl might want to avoid the area past the break.

You've been warned.

The VC Advantage: Continuous Fight

The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.

Much like every other brawler that followed, Final Fight's bosses and large enemies (especially the Andore family) have total priority over all your player attacks. You can be mid-combo and those bastards just stop you cold and take you down -- which kind of defeats the purpose of combos. Luckily for expert Final Fight players (by which we mean people who are willing to exploit an unintentional glitch), Capcom provided the most boring of the three protagonists, Cody, with a failsafe, game-breaking advantage. Not that they meant to do so. Everyone probably already knows about this, but that's no reason not to celebrate it!

Activision to fix Guitar Hero sound issues with new disc

People who bought the Wii version of Guitar Hero III have been (justifiably) annoyed by the lack of stereo and surround sound in Activision's popular music game. However, Wii owners can at least take some comfort in knowing that the problem will soon be fixed.

Activision's customer support has replied to many irate users with an email stating that re-mastered discs should be available by early 2008. This means that customers who buy the game after the re-mastered version is available should get the fixed copies, while those who already own the game can get replacement discs at no charge.

The last time we announced a disc swap for a glitched Wii game, many of you expressed your desires to have a simple downloadable patch instead. While we agree that a patch would be more convenient, we're still glad that there will be a fix available in the near future.

[Thanks, Langst!]

Fire Emblem transfer glitch to be fixed

One neat feature in the Wii's Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is that you can import a save file from the game's GameCube prequel, Path of Radiance. This will give some of your characters stat boosts, not to mention a few other nice perks.

For anyone who just rolled through PoR on easy mode in order to beat the game quickly and pump their characters full of bonus experience, however, Radiant Dawn will laugh at you and then slap you in the face for good measure. See, easy mode files don't transfer over to Radiant Dawn because (as you'll know if you've played the game), the word "easy" isn't in its vocabulary. Even if you try to transfer a normal or hard mode file while having any easy mode PoR files saved somewhere else on your card, Radiant Dawn will have none of that.

Christian from The Tanooki decided to contact Nintendo on the issue, and it seems that Nintendo will have a fix ready by mid-December. In order to get your disc repaired (or possibly get a completely new disc), you have to contact Nintendo about the issue, give them your name, address, and phone number, and then send your disc to them when prompted.

So, what lesson have we learned from all this? Well, that Fire Emblem is for badasses only, of course.

NoE finally doing something about busted Super Paper Mario

So, it's been a whole two months since Nintendo of Europe acknowledged that a special glitch existed in the PAL version of Super Paper Mario and what have they done about it? Bupkis, that's what. Today, however, changes things as the European arm of the seven-headed hydra that is Nintendo has offered a fix for the issue.

Details on getting a new, glitch-free disc are finally revealed, as they would like you to either send them an email at NintendoServiceCentre [at] codestorm [dawt] co [dawt] uk or hit them up via the telephone at 0870-6060-247. In doing so, they promise to rush you a new disc as soon as they can, however it isn't said how long that will take, exactly.

Going to get your new disc?

Super Mario Galaxy glitch forces you to reload game

Turns out, there might be a glitch in that copy of Super Mario Galaxy you've been playing. During an encounter with Bowser in the game, one person found that they could knock Bowser off of the planet they were engaging him on, freaking out the camera and causing the game to halt all progress. Hopefully, this won't happen to us, because reloading the game during a fight with Bowser would be all kinds of annoying.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

[Thanks, Martin B!]

Fix revealed for resolution issue on NeoGeo games

You know how we were having issues with the NeoGeo games on the Virtual Console? Well, someone on these fine internets figured out a fix, although it isn't as ideal as a system update from Nintendo would be. Still, it's not that difficult of a process and allows us to play our games. That's what's most important, after all.

Here's the fix:
  • Boot up your NeoGeo VC game of choice
  • When it loads with the squished screen, hit the Home button on your Wiimote
  • Head into the Operations Guide
  • Once inside, plug your nunchuk controller into your Wiimote, then simultaneously press A+Z+1
  • You should hear a sound, signaling that the Wii has been set to Interlace mode
  • Enjoy.
Now, once done, all of your NeoGeo games should run fine, meaning you won't have to do this for every game.

[Thanks, Jason!]

Europe gets special Glitch Edition of Super Paper Mario

Nintendo of Europe released a statement today acknowledging the existence of a game-freezing bug in the European release of Super Paper Mario. If you only play games for the excitement of seeing them fail, you're in luck. Everyone else: read where and how it happens, so you can avoid it.

The offending bug occurs in Chapter 2-2. A character named Mimi will speak to you and send you on your way. Before the next time you meet her, you should be able to find a key. If you speak to her again without first picking up the key, the game registers its disapproval with you. In other words, it freezes. This only occurs when playing the game in UK English, German, or Spanish.

Nintendo will have information soon about how to get a replacement copy, so you'll be able to talk to Mimi whenever you please. Until then, you know, don't do that.

Metroid Prime 3: Corrupted

Reader fatherb sent in this video of his sad encounter with one of the bosses in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Apparently, he isn't the only one experiencing this horrible glitch in the game, which we won't go into detail about for those of you who have yet to come into contact with this boss. In fact, since this is chock full of spoilers, we've gone ahead and tucked the video past the break.

Watch at your own risk.

Japanese gamers can throw back glitched Forever Blue for a fresh one

The happy vibes around Arika's Forever Blue were recently disrupted by news of a game-breaking glitch. Obviously, this means that you shouldn't import it yet. But don't worry! Nintendo is intent on restoring the collective mellow of the Japanese diving-game audience, and to do so, they'll start shipping out non-busted copies of the game on the 21st. They've set up a page for people to sign up for new copies to replace their glitched ones.

In the meantime, if you've got one of the tainted Forever Blues, keep the shinonomesakatazame (shark ray) out of your aquarium.
