The VC Advantage: How to win at selling lots of books

The VC Advantage is usually geared toward nostalgia -- specifically, evoking the memories of a time gone by, when we were denied resources such as GameFAQs, we had to look up codes in magazines, and we had to walk two miles uphill to school (both ways!). Help was available in other places besides magazines back then. Needed to know what to play and how to advance? You could turn to a book ... and we're not talking about glitzy Prima strategy guides packed with glossy photos, either.

Growing up, I didn't have much access to gaming magazines, and I'm not even sure why. I'm sure I was aware that Nintendo Power existed, and I know I read a few issues, but I wasn't a subscriber and rarely bought it (blasphemy!). I did, however, read many of Jeff Rovin's How to Win books cover to cover.

Play Umbrella Chronicles like a reviewer

In the spirit of generating hits for their new blog openness, Capcom has made their Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles reviewer's guide available on Flickr as a gallery. The 12-page document explains all the weapons in the game and how to use them, along with the game's controls. It also introduces the characters, in case the only Resident Evil character with whom you've familiarized yourself is "Zombie."

There aren't really any secrets revealed or anything; the reviewer's guide doesn't contain any helpful cheats or other tips to help reviewers fast-track through the game. But it's cool to see this kind of stuff that usually doesn't get released to the public. Also, the thing is nicely laid out.

Marathon guide-writing for Super Paper Mario

In an attempt to get a Super Paper Mario guide out as quickly as possible, the team at WiiGuideYou is burning through the game at warp speed and putting up a chapter a day of their guide. Chapter 1 is scheduled to go up the 10th, and each day will see a new chapter, until the series (and the game) concludes with Chapter 8. They're even attempting to get Chapter 1's guide up early.

If they accomplish this task, it means that either they worked day and night at getting through the game to provide a guide, or that the game is really, really easy. If you don't mind the extreme spoilers that are, in fact, the whole point of game guides, then check it out and cheer them on!
