Wii Fanboy Review: Gyrostarr

High Voltage Software created the Saturn and PlayStation ports of Jeff Minter's Jaguar shooter Tempest 2000. This means, amusingly enough, that they have previous experience literally cloning Tempest. Based on its appearance, it would be tempting to call the company's WiiWare shooter Gyrostarr an application of this specialized knowledge. However, for a game about shooting spaceships in a chute, Gyrostarr has surprisingly little to do with the Tempest series. In fact, it diverges from the entire shooter genre in a few fundamental ways.

Get Fit with new Nintendo Channel videos

The most noteworthy new video added to the Nintendo Channel this week is the first installment of the new longform Wii Fit ad/exercise program "Get Wii Fit with Alyson." In this introductory video, a group of young Disney Channel-ready actors looks on as Alyson undergoes her first Wii Fit Body Test. If you've yet to pick up Wii Fit and would like to see it judging people, watch this. A new edition of "Get Fit with Alyson" is also available on the website.

Other new videos include promos for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Rock Band, footage of today's WiiWare game, and a bit about the new controls in NCAA Football '09. Step onto the Balance Board, do a stretch or two, and enjoy the videos on the Nintendo Channel!

Gyrostarr for WiiWare announced, no relation to Gyromite

The Conduit and Quantum3 middleware developer High Voltage Software has unveiled another Wii title in the works, Gyrostarr, this time for WiiWare. The "sci-fi" Tempest-esque shooter offers 50 procedurally-generated tracks, supporting traditional and motion-enabled controls with both Wii Remote and Wii Remote/Nunchuk options.

Gyrostarr allows up to four players to compete or work cooperatively attacking the tracks, depending on how they decide to play. Weapons and power-ups litter the stages, and each ship comes equipped with a grapple gun to snatch those bonuses before other players can grab them. Expect Gyrostarr to debut for only 700 Wii Points when the WiiWare service launches.
