Iwata: Keep dreaming of a white console Christmas

Whether or not you've been able to find Wiis in stores as of late, the holiday season is a completely different beast. Even now, in July, company president Satoru Iwata can't promise that there will be enough Wiis stocked to meet demand this Christmastime. If Wiis are scarce, this will be the third holiday season in a row that people in the U.S. and UK have had difficulty locating the console.

Iwata promises that the company is doing everything in its power to avoid this situation, and is on schedule to develop 2.4 million units for 2008 by the end of the year.

We can imagine only that some other Nintendo stock (we're looking at you, Wii Fit) will be a nightmare to find this holiday season, too.

[Thanks, Thomas!]

Happy 4th from Wii Fanboy!

For those of us in the United States (a majority of our staff), today is Independence Day. We won't go telling you everything about the holiday, because the internet makes it easy to track down information for yourself. But, we will say that it's one of our biggest holidays, so expect us to be taking it kind of easy around here today.

We'll have posts lined up for you all throughout the day, but the space between them will be wider. So, if you find yourself in front of the computer today, check us out periodically, as we'll still have some great content for you. For those of you in the United States, have a great 4th. For the rest of the world, we hope you enjoy your day. Thanks for reading!

Mii Jesus advertises for Easter services

The Mii. At the rate it's going, we're sure it'll be Time's Person of the Year or something soon. And the church is starting to get that popularity, apparently, as a Jesus Mii is being used to advertise Easter Sunday services for the Mission Bay Community Church.

The church itself is located in the San Francisco area and, to our knowledge, the first of its kind to actually be hip to what the kids think is, well ... hip. Kudos to the church on finding a smart way to advertise their services.

For all of you celebrating Easter today, we hope you have a safe and happy holiday.

NiGHTS: Holidays of Dreams

While there's (currently) no Christmas-related expansion like there was on the Saturn, Sonic Team still managed to sneak some seasonal content into NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. No doubt some of you have figured this out already, as holidays have happened since the game's release. But new NiGHTS players or those who don't mess around in the "My Dream" mode won't have seen any of it yet!

There's a special celebration of some kind in My Dream every single month. The Nightopians shoot fireworks all day on New Year's Day. In July, they don bullfighting gear for the Running of the Bulls. You can access this content in the manner of a cheating jerk by disconnecting from the Internet and changing the system's date, or you can wait like a decent human being.

Wii Fanboy Poll: Are you and the family playing Wii today?

With today being a holiday, we wondered if you were bringing the Wii into the mix? The strategic thing would be to bust out the console and get your game on before stuffing yourself with mashed potatoes, turkey and cranberry sauce, though. We would never dare tell you how to live. But, that is if you in fact plan on actually playing the console with family and friends.

Are you and the family playing Wii today?

Happy Turkey Day from Wii Fanboy

To most of our readers, today is the holiday where buttons suddenly go missing and bellies expand to proportions only seen once a year. It's a day of turkey and pie and gathering with family and friends. If you're the fan of some crummy football team, it's also a day of sports. It's a day to reflect on what you're thankful for and to relax.

So, that's what we're doing. We'll be posting today, but at a limited capacity (we have families, too!). If you find yourself near a computer, stick around and check us out today, but be sure to give your family the time of day, also. Or, better yet, share the blog with them. They want to know what's going on in your life, anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving from Wii Fanboy and, as always, thanks for reading! We really appreciate it.

Wii Warm Up: Shortages

Nearly a year into the release of the Wii, the shortages continue. Some areas enjoyed a little short-lived respite, but with the holidays around the corner, it seems that once again -- for a variety of possible reasons -- getting your hands on a Wii is about as common as spying a leprechaun in the wild.

As a Nintendo fan, does the continued demand for the console surprise you? Certainly, during the holidays, it makes sense; during November and December, it can be difficult to find a toothpick, much less a hot commodity, but it's not like this is new. Did you expect things might taper off a little? Nintendo seemed to expect it, even if you didn't, at least now that we've all gotten over the initial shock that came with everyone demanding a Wii.

Gift services go live worldwide for holidays

Sure, maybe a lot of you don't find the idea itself terribly exciting, but we are definitely pleased to hear that the Wii Shop Channel's new gift feature will be live worldwide in time for the holidays. Now you'll be able to gift friends with awesome old games without having to track them down in physical form -- and without unloading a lot of cash, either. That's a win all around.

It might also be worth noting that Gamefront's headline on the announcement had the "Wii Gift Channel" in English, and since "das Gift" means "poison" in German, Google's autotranslator informed us that the Wii Poison Channel would be a go in December. We're not quite as excited about that one, frankly.

Wii Fanboy wishes everyone a happy Easter

Whether you believe in the lore associated with Easter or not is irrelevant; most of the country comes to a stop today, with shops closed and everyone home preparing for a nice ham dinner. We here at Wii Fanboy just wanted to take the time to wish those of you celebrating the holiday a happy one. For the rest of you, enjoy the time off and get some game time in. Maybe go see a movie? We heard that Grindhouse picture is supposed to be swell ...

So, what will you be doing today? Will you, like the fine folks over at The Tanooki, be crafting some Yoshi egg cookies of your own? Have your own holiday culinary concoction planned?

From all of us here at Wii Fanboy, have a safe and happy holiday. Thanks for reading!

Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption to be released in late '07?

So far away...Le sigh. There was a point, if we here at the Fanboy offices can remember correctly, that both Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption were both possible launch titles. Now, according to some whispers over at CVG, neither title will be released (along with the eternally delayed Zelda: Phantom Hourglass) until the holiday season of 2007.

Patience is a good thing, and we're more than willing to wait until both of these quadruple-A titles are as shiny as can be. Still, unless Super Smash Bros: Brawl can make it out either in summer or even earlier (something we highly doubt), Nintendo is going to be going quite some time without a big first-party title. Memories of the typical Gamecube release schedule are coming to mind, but alas ... at least we've got the Virtual Console to keep us busy...

Flickr hearts Wii

Flickr
has been infected with all sorts of shots of the Wii in action, and WiiNintendo gathered several of the best to show off the new console. Several of these look like they might be from family gatherings ... and we can't wait to pack up our Wii for the holiday family tour coming up this weekend. We may even have to share some on Flickr, since it seems that Wii action shots are the new cat pics. Hmm. Maybe we should encourage the cats to play with the Wiimotes. Cutting edge, here we come!

Looking for Nintendo

So, we already heard that Best Buy may be holding their in-stock Wiis until Sunday ... and a number of sources are reporting that GameStop is doing the same. What's more? All of our sneaky anonymous sources within the two retail giants are saying that the hold is absolutely true. December 17 is the new Wii day.

Expect a holiday frenzy if you're out shopping this weekend, and if you want to snag a Wii, get there early and cross your fingers. Anyone up for camping?

The Wii holiday buyer's guide part 2: the casual player

After our first part in an attempt to help you introduce someone else into the wonderful world of gaming, part 2 is aimed more at the casual type. Someone who already owns the system, maybe a game or two, and finds themself occupying a few hours each week gaming it up. This part in our 3 part guide is aimed at helping them expand that small fascination. Read on for some thoughtful ideas on what to get them this holiday season!

Top ten gift ideas for the Wii owner ... or not?

Oh boy -- it's that time of the year again when everyone and their brother gets on the recommended gift bandwagon (tip: ours will, of course, be way better), whether they know what they're on about or not. This latest list of recommend gifts for Wii owners was shaping up nicely until we got to the number one item. Then it became more of a top ten gifts for the apparently broke and trapped under a rock Nintendo fan. Why? Any list that declares Twilight Princess as the ultimate gift for people who already own the system is immediately suspect -- because those of us who love all things Zelda already rushed out and scored a copy. Some even grabbed multiples. Just, y'know, in case. And for the five who didn't, we're sorry, and we hope that support group is working out for you. It gets better with time.

It's not all bad. The SD card that comes in at number three makes a solid gift, and we're big fans of most of the recommended games. But when it comes to buying gifts for those who already own a Wii, don't go for the obvious -- go for the unusual.

[Thanks, Mike!]

Confirmed: EB Games/GameStop with fresh inventory for Friday

Remember that missing nunchuk? Here it is, Wednesday, and there's still no multiplayer beyond most of Wii Sports ... but after a few calls to the local store regarding the fact that it was supposed to be there Monday, suddenly they've "just received" a shipment. This looks very like confirmation of increased stock for Black Friday.

Of course, it just makes sense -- say what you will about GameStop (I've said a few things myself this past week ...), but they are too savvy to let America's biggest holiday shopping day pass without new inventory. We all expected new shipments of Wii-related goodies (and some for the other guys), but for those who are still sans Wii, it's nice to have confirmation. Happy camping!
