E308: Animal Crossing to support keyboards, save fruit-picking time

All Animal Crossing games are wonderful, but that's not all they have in common: as it happens, each game in the series to date has featured an unwieldy, cumbersome user interface. Every tool and item can only be selected by opening a totally separate menu, you can't skip through any of the game's (oft-repeated) dialogue, and writing letters/entering text is a royal pain in the backside, thanks to the excruciatingly annoying on-screen keyboard.

This morning, JC's hands-on impressions of Animal Crossing: City Folk revealed that Nintendo had fixed the first problem, by allowing users to cycle through their inventory with the d-pad. And now the third issue has been resolved, for City Folk will let players hook a USB keyboard up to their Wiis -- superb news! Just give us the ability to skip instantly through Nook's natterings and Blathers' blather, and we'll be pleased as punch.

E308: Logitech unveils cordless Wii keyboard

Surfing the 'net on Nintendo's white box 'o joy just got a whole lot easier. Logitech has whipped the covers off of this sleek beast: a cordless Wii keyboard. This bad boy works from up to 30 feet (10 meters) from the console, and comes with dedicated buttons for "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out," "Forward" and "Back", "Quit," and "OK."

So there you go: no more painstakingly entering text with the Wiimote. Now, aside from surfing the 'net, what else do we think this might be used for? We'll find out soon enough!

[Thanks, Chris!]

Logic 3 opens preorders on keyboard peripheral for Wii

Our friends across the pond (and Chris) have a choice when it comes to keyboards for their Wii. No, we're not talking about the wide assortment of cheap USB keyboards that are out there and compatible with the console, we mean Logic 3's Wii keyboard above. Aside from its plain design, it features the normal QWERTY set-up and will cost you £14.99 (about $30). It will release on July 18th.

Surprise, again! MSX games support USB keyboards

D4 Enterprise just opened up a new area of their "Project MSX" website that provides information on the MSX game(s) available on the Japanese Virtual Console. This site, which is designed similarly to the VC sites operated by Sega and Hudson, is going to be an excellent resource for learning about obscure MSX games as they come out, with boxarts, screenshots and game descriptions.

The page for the sole MSX game currently available, Aleste, revealed surprising, previously unknown information about the Wii's MSX emulator: specifically, that Aleste supports the use of USB keyboards, in addition to the Wiimote, GameCube controller, and Classic Controller. It makes sense since the MSX is a computer, but this is the first new control option for a Virtual Console game since the service began.

Wii Warm Up: QWERTY

The Wii now has the rarely-discussed ability to receive input from USB keyboards. You can type in the Wii Message Board and (most importantly) the Internet Channel using the charmingly quaint "hitting buttons with pictures of the letters you want to put on the screen" method instead of the vastly superior, futuristic "pointing at the letters one at a time on your TV" method. But are you?

New hardware MEGATON: Logitech's Wii keyboard

Yesterday, after the update enabling USB keyboards in the web browser was released, Logitech mentioned that they'd be releasing a special Wii keyboard. We immediately got the crazy idea of a keyboard with a Wii pointer built in, so you can point and click by waving the keyboard around. It was a weirdly practical, and fun, idea.

But as always, reality is less awesome than our controller fantasies. Logitech announced that their "new" USB keyboard will be ... the Classic Keyboard 200. (pictured above). They added a blurb to the Japanese product page that mentions that it's been tested with the Wii browser and found to work. Which means that you can get the new Wii peripheral right now, because it's just their basic USB keyboard. It only seems to be available in white in Japan, however. Importing might be worth it for you, because in addition to the color, the logo will say "Logicool" (Logitech's Japanese name) which we find hilarious.

Nintendo mysteriously updates Everybody Votes, Opera throws the browser a keyboard bone

It was a big day for Nintendo fans. Not only did we get some great announcements out of a surprise conference in Japan, but we were greeted by the friendly blue glow when we were able to tear ourselves away from said news and actually look at our beloved consoles.

While exciting on the face, though, today's update ends up being less than thrilling. Much-needed keyboard functionality came to the Opera browser, but it's still limited, and the Wii remote must be used to navigate through text boxes. Take the average search form as an example; at the computer, most of the time, you can type in your search terms and hit enter -- or at the most, tab to the search button and then hit enter. No such luck with the Wii's browser. It's more like this:
  1. Navigate to text box with Wii remote
  2. Enter text on keyboard
  3. Navigate to enter/search button with Wii remote
  4. Profit. Very slow and awkward profit, but better than a poke in the eye with ye olde sharp stick.

Some USB keyboards working with Wii

We're not sure how someone decided to randomly plug in a keyboard after yesterday's update and test it, but bless the little buggers at NeoGAF who gave it a shot -- because it works! Before you start turning cartwheels, however, know this: keyboard support seems limited. We tried an older Micro Innovations keyboard we used to use with the PS2 first, and it was a no go -- but a newer Apple USB keyboard worked like a charm for messaging and in the Wii Shop channel (but apparently nowhere else). We can only guess the Wii wanted to match. We must say, however, the cord length required some moving-around of things on our cluttered game stand and typing in an uncomfortable standing position. Still, this update bodes well -- if a future update brings keyboard functionality to the Internet Channel, things could get very interesting indeed.

Nintendo looking into keyboard peripheral

With the news this week that Logitech is going to provide peripherals for Nintendo's Wii console, this latest tidbit of information coming from the May 2007 issue of Game Informer has a bit more credibility than we would normally give it. Found on page 18 under the Data File section, the news is welcomed by this blogger, who (probably much like yourself) finds navigating the web through the Wii's Opera browser a bit of a chore, unless they're bookmarked.

Given the news, what kind of price point would you like to see for a Nintendo keyboard? Would you want it USB or wireless bluetooth? Or maybe you want to see some kind of small keyboard that attaches to the Wiimote, kind of how Microsoft is doing it? Let's hope it's QWERTY, as well ...

Head past the break for a high-res image.

Wii Warm Up: USB Possibilities

zOMGUSBAs I completed a microprocessors lab on the wonders of RS-232, my mind flashed back to those two rather standard ports on the back of the Wii. Yes, the Wii still has two USB 2.0 slots on its behind, and yet not a single peep has come from Nintendo regarding their usage. Were we not promised external hard drive support? A keyboard would be lovely, too; typing with the Wiimote can get excessively tedious.

Besides the obvious, though, how could the Wii make good use of these ports? Is there nothing that the Wiimote's expansion port can't cover? Hmmmm.
