Straps and stands: More preorder bonuses in Korea

Koreans really love free stuff! Then again, who doesn't?

This latest round of preorder incentives rewards gamers who've reserved Wii Sports with branded towels and Wii Remote cell phone straps. Unlike in the states, Wiis will not come bundled with Wii Sports when the console launches in South Korea on April 26th.

EA is also throwing in what looks like Brando's Crystal Cooler with every preorder for FIFA 08. The replacement base features a cooling fan and electric blue LEDs -- not too useful, but it's free, which automatically makes it a hundred times more awesome. Bring five bucks past the post break to get a look at the stand offer.

Golf With Style! (in Korea)

Publishers in South Korea are pulling out all the stops to make sure gamers pick up their launch titles when the Wii officially debuts in the country on April 26. Though these aren't as glamorous (or as scandalous) as the Zack & Wiki pearl necklaces, Tecmo is giving away free shirts featuring characters Kooh and Arin with preorders for Swing Golf Pangya 2nd Shot.

Interestingly, the golf title will be released in Korea four months after the game arrived in the states, despite being a console spin-off of a Korean MMO. At least they'll get free shirts to make up for the delay! And they're still getting it before Europe (July 4th)!

Capcom gives Koreans pearl necklaces (and mousepads)

When the Nintendo Wii launches in South Korea this April 26th, Zack & Wiki will be sitting pretty on store shelves, too, beckoning adventure gaming fans to pick up a copy to accompany their new consoles. Rather than rely on the critically-acclaimed game's looks to generate sales, Capcom is offering two gifts with each preorder -- a Zack & Wiki-decorated mousepad and a treasure box filled with what looks like candy.

If that isn't enough to motivate Korean gamers, one hundred of those treasure boxes will contain a real pearl necklace! What a strange but awesome incentive! We wish someone would offer to give us a pearl necklace. All we ever received when we picked up Zack & Wiki was a look of derision from the GameStop clerk and a dim-witted quip about kiddie graphics.

Wii hits South Korea on April 26

Almost eighteen months after the console made its worldwide debut in the U.S., South Korea has finally received news of its own Wii launch. Little wonder they all look so elated -- back in 2006, our reaction to Wii launch news was similar (if you take away the flag, the crowds, the being outside, and the baring of flesh).

Although South Korea has had to wait some time to get its Wii on, they're getting it fairly cheap when it does arrive on April 26th. The console itself is 220,000 won ($224), while the games range from 38,000 won ($39) to 48,000 won ($49). The launch line-up is dominated by third-parties, with Wii Sports, Wii Play (and a Wiimote), Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Zack & Wiki, FIFA 2008, Elebits, Namco Museum Remix, and Pangya Golf 2nd Shot available to first-day Wii owners, and Guitar Hero III scheduled for May.

Finally, the country gets its very own Virtual Console, with both a reduced number of consoles (only NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64) and reduced prices. Yep, you read that right: South Koreans will only have to pay 400 Wii Points for NES titles, 600 Points for SNES games, and 800 Points for N64 titles. Lucky blighters.

Wii to be demonstrated in South Korea next month

To drum up some more buzz for their console in South Korea, Nintendo has announced it will have a press conference lined up so folks can get their hands on the Wii. It's all going down on April 14th at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul. We're not sure if this thing will be invite-only or not, so Seoul Wii Fanboy readers, here's a protip: use the alley entrance on the northwest side.

Many are still looking to Children's Day as being the time when Nintendo will officially release the console to the region. No word from Nintendo, however, so we'll just have to wait and see if they say more come April 14th.

Wii in South Korea by May 5

After opening a branch in South Korea, Nintendo has quickly ushered the DS into the region and into the hands of eager gamers. The DS has been received with big, open arms by the public, so it's only natural that Nintendo would want to get the Wii in there, as well. That time may be during this May, apparently.

In a report recently published by The Korea Times, word hits that both Nintendo and Activision registered games with the Korean ratings board (their version of the ESRB). With the popular gift-giving holiday Children's Day coming May 5th, the consensus is that the system will launch then.

Regardless of when it's coming, the important thing is that it is arriving at all. We'll cross our fingers for you, fine Korean brothers and sisters, so that you may enjoy what has been the focus of our lives for quite some time.

Korea: Two Guitar Heroes enter, one Guitar Hero leaves

Korea is apparently the place to be when it comes to the integration of gaming and television, as the country doesn't have to put up with the insipid mess of G4 like those of us in the United States. Instead, they look at gaming as more of a competitive sport, showcasing contests between gamers (the example here being Guitar Hero). Sounds like win to us (unless we were to go up against this kid), as we all like to brag about our gaming achievements (34 stars in Super Mario Galaxy for this blogger, hells yeah).

Audition Online dev talks bringing something to the Wii

It's no surprise to anyone that Korea is one of the largest games markets around. Nintendo just found out that the region is worth the effort, as they officially opened up shop there during July of last year. It wasn't without its bumps, but the ride itself has been an overall pleasant one for Nintendo.

Now, the Korean developers behind Audition Online are in talks with Nintendo to bring something to the Wii. Yoo-Ra Kim, CMO and director of T3 Entertainment, commented "Luckily, yesterday, I met a Nintendo guy from here. He was interested in one of our titles, and next year, we're going to have a meeting. Soon, I can show you another Nintendo version!" Kim also goes on to say "We are very flexible, so unless they suggest too tough of conditions, we'd really love to do it. Some of our titles really fit for the Nintendo Wii. They really fit."

While we'd like to see Audition Online retooled for the Wii (gotta love those rhythm games), we're not quite sure that's the case here. Instead, we're of the mind that T3 could be looking to bring something new to the console.

Nintendo Korea site goes live

The website for Nintendo Korea has gone live, expectantly chock full of info on the DS Lite and its Brain Training games. They do a good job of introducing the DS and going over its many features. There's even a commerical or two for you to watch. Overall, the site is very easy to navigate, although barren of Wii-related items at the moment.

Nintendo of Korea not Nintendo of Korea

It's no mystery what Koreans enjoy doing. They enjoy gaming and have continually embraced the medium with open arms, creating a market big enough to rival the largest on the globe. Originally, Nintendo was distributed via Daiwon in the region. In July, Nintendo launched their own Korean branch to tap into the potential of the market. Turns out, that didn't really happen.

Upon visiting the "offices" of the new branch, which, according to the employees within, is not a part of Nintendo and things are still very much run by the ever-pleasant Daiwon, 4cr tells of a sad state of affairs. When asked whether these fine individuals were employed by Nintendo, one employee became particularly enraged, shouting "Did you see Nintendo written on this building?! We don't ****** care about that ****!"

So has Nintendo given up on the territory or are they taking their time to launch the Wii first before committing personnel?

Nintendo opens Korean branch

At today's general shareholder's meeting in Kyoto, Japan, Nintendo revealed that they will be opening a new office in Seoul, South Korea. This office, which is set to open on July 7th, is focused on the booming gaming populace of Korea, which has quickly become one of the largest gaming markets in a short time. The starting capitol for this office is close to £12,500,000 (or a little under 23 million US monies). This is a first for the company, who used third-party Daiwon to supply their games to the territory before.
