EA Sports introduces kid-friendly waggle with "Family Play"

Never let it be said that EA can't innovate! Whatever we usually think of EA Sports, their new Family Play control system is really cool.

Madden '08, NBA Live '08,
and FIFA Soccer '08 will all include Wiimote-and-Nunchuk-based control schemes that will allow players to "take full control of the game"-- running, passing, kicking (not so much in NBA Live) and such. But they'll also include simplified Wiimote-only control schemes that reduce the games to Wii Sports-level . The controls become fully gestural, and the AI takes over some of the gameplay tasks that were previously yours.

The coolest part? You can switch back and forth on the fly, just by plugging in or unplugging the Nunchuk. Even the method of choosing controls is streamlined. We are quite impressed.

Wii hits an unofficial eight million sold

Start your engines, fanboys. According to vgchartz.com, which is where we go to hang out when we're bored, the Wii just yesterday surpassed eight million units sold since its November 19th launch in North America. That's fast. That's really fast. Check out this graph with the option "align launches" enabled; it's staggering.

So, here we go. By the end of year, Nintendo Wii sales will most likely have surpassed the Xbox 360's one-year head start to become the current generation leader, and heck, we might just "win" this thing. Who'd have thought such a turnaround was possible? And why the hell didn't we buy NTDOY stock? Dammit.

Bask in the glory, guys. Most likely, one of those eight million is yours.

Wii Warm Up: EA waggle

Agent Zero FTWSo, EA has thrown their support behind the Wii (after a categorical beatdown in sales). It's great to have the behemoth on our side, of course, but there seems to be this mystique in the air, one that enforces a rule: if a multi-platform game is coming to the Wii, it needs to use waggle.

Take, for instance, the upcoming version of NBA Live '08, featuring one hobbled Agent Zero (Gilbert Arenas) on the cover. Do we really want to have to dribble the ball using the Wiimote? Even something like passing could be wildly inaccurate if two players are in the same direction; the game might end up suffering as a result.

Do you feel as though multiplatform games tend to benefit from additional Wii controls, or suffer? What are some notable examples?

Nintendo of Japan press event: pseudo-live blogging [update 29]

Here we go...Unfortunately, none of the Wii Fanboy staff reside in or speak the language of Japan. As such, we've committed ourselves to hitting the refresh key a whole crapload of times and scouring numerous chatrooms until we find out what the hell is going on over there. Check back constantly for any new developments!

Wii looks to pump you up

These dudes are no girly men!According to IGN, Nintendo just might be trying to get you off of the couch and into a workout routine with the Wii, doing for your body what Brain Age on the DS did for your mind. They found this news via Bloomberg, which claims that Nintendo is in the process of making new diet-based software for the console.

This idea sounds about right, but in what way could they guarantee an actual fitness experience through use of the Wiimote? Would they try to market another peripheral for the console or would the player just jog in place, for instance? Sure, we could imagine the Wiimote playing a role in some kind of exercise routine where stretching was a major aspect or perhaps some kind of yoga variant, but we know that is in no way going to pump you up.
