E308: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 trailer is less than ultimate

We don't mind short trailers, and we don't mind teasers, but we were hoping to see a bit more from Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. We had a lot of fun with the first game, and we want to get hyped about the second, but it's hard when all we see is about nine seconds of non-action footage. Even less exciting, most of the characters featured in this trailer were already in the first game, so there's not even much new blood to enjoy.

This is E3: step up your game, Activision. However, since this short video did remind us that the game is, in fact, coming -- albeit in 2009 -- we suppose we can't be too sour.

Friday Video: Samus joins the Ultimate Alliance

For those of you who noticed the PS2 buttons make their way into the video, know that this does come from the PS2 build of the game. You see, Vicarious Visions, the developers behind Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the PS2, wanted to include both Samus and Link into the game and apparently did without Nintendo's consent. There's a lot of confusion surrounding it and, supposedly, when Nintendo was shown the characters were included in the PS2 version of the game, told Activision to cut them out. The rest is just a bunch of confusing history.

The Ultimate Alliance forms again in 2009

Fans of the latest Marvel dungeon crawler, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, know that a sequel to your beloved game is inbound, however it's going to take a bit longer than you might like. You see, the sequel to the first game isn't going to be on shelves until next year. Here, cry on our shoulder. Go ahead, let it all out!

Our cruel overlords at Joystiq seem to think that the new Spider-Man: Web of Shadows game could have something to do with the delay. As for us, well, we're not complaining if the time is put to good use. The first game was a boatload of fun, so we hope the sequel is just as good, if not better.

Iron Man game will include movie voices

Should you want to bring Hollywood straight into your living rooms (or basements, or bedrooms, or wherever your game systems are set up), then Sega's got your back. The company announced today that their upcoming Iron Man game will include the same actors from the movie -- well, three of them, at least.

Everyone's favorite player ladies' man, Tony Stark (aka Iron Man's alter ego), will of course be voiced by Robert Downey Jr. The other two celebs involved in the game are Terrence Howard (Jim Rhodes) and Shaun Toub (Yin-Sen).

We haven't spent much time talking about Iron Man on NWF, even though the game isn't that far off (early May). Is anyone looking forward to it? And if so, do you plan on getting it for your Wii over another console?

The Hulk bashes his way onto the Wii

And no, we're not talking about Hulk Hogan, but The Incredible Hulk.

When a big Hollywood movie involving a comic book character is in the works, it's often not long before a video game medium is announced. A movie based on the Hulk is coming to Hollywood for the second time in five years, so we weren't surprised when Sega announced they'd be bringing a game based on The Incredible Hulk movie to all current-gen consoles.

Marvel's less-than-jolly green giant will be hitting Wiis and other systems this June, to coincide with the movie's release. It will feature an open-world New York City environment, letting you unleash your destruction upon Manhattan, while of course saving Manhattan from destruction

If you ask us, the whole idea going on a rampage and destroying the city as a human-turned-monster reminds us of, well, Rampage.

The Wii makes its way into print comics

According to Marvel, even the bad guys enjoy the Wii. Sent in to us by reader Ken, who's apparently quite the comic fan, in issue #9 of Irredeemable Ant-Man, it's perfectly alright to break into someone's house, wait for them to come home and then engage them in some Nintendo Wii. It's not like it isn't anything we'd endorse.

[Thanks, Ken!]

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance ad

We welcome Nintendo's marketing blitz because it just means we get a lot of sweet video game footage disguised as ads. And we do like us some videos! But this ad for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance gets all the props for including Captain America's shield throw, since that's one of the first things we're all not-so-secretly dying to do.

Check out the video, embedded as always after the jump.

Target hooks us up yet again

One of our readers was visiting his local Seattle, WA area Target store recently and stumbled upon a DVD for sale at the low cost of only a penny. This DVD, which features game trailers for both Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for the Wii, is titled Living the Game with the Wii and Activision. With the combination of the Wii gift card, it seems like Target has caught the fever the rest of us are suffering from.

Anyone else see this in their local Target? Can anyone confirm how many trailers are on this disc?

[Thanks mykie!]

Behind the scenes: Wii game testers

Hyper-realistic graphicsWith the new, innovative control scheme presented by the Wii, no doubt game testers and QA folks are getting a work out. Not only are they now charged with pushing buttons, but must also add in the spectrum of movement with the Wiimote. How does a fast swipe react in-game compared to that of a slow, long swipe? How about thrusting? Clearly, it's a tough job that even rocket scientists request no part of.

In the behind the scenes article, associate designer Mike Chrzanowski commented that initially his game, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, had around 20 different gestures translating into in-game actions. This caused a lot more harm than help, however, which then dropped the 20 down to a more modest and manageable 5. Obviously, including more gesture-based gameplay leaves a larger possibility for error, so in cutting it down to 5 the player need not worry that when Spidey is supposed to do a web swing, he instead does another signature, albeit less-popular, maneuver in the patented getting beaten to death by multiple thugs move.

Details on Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Cap'n America enjoys choking robots and long walks on the beach.IGN confirmed during an interview with producer Evan Skolnick of Vicarious Visions that the Wii build of the game won't be totally lacking. The biggest let-down from the piece is that the game will offer no online support whatsoever, meaning that we will not see any WiiConnect 24 features utilized as well as no online co-op play.

On the bright side, however, is that the game will be a launch title and retail for $49.99 US. Evan also commented that the game's controls on the Wii will differ from the other console versions of the game, something we were horribly mislead to believe wasn't happening. Turns out that while in other console versions of the game you can only map two super powers to the controller at any given time, on the Wii the game will allow the player to use any power whenever they wish simply by performing a specific gesture with the Wiimote.

Screenshot explosion: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

When we found out that Marvel: Ultimate Alliance would not use the exciting and innovative control scheme that the Wii offers, many a Fanboy staffer cried, ever so softly, in the corner huddled in the fetal position, sobbing heard long into the night. Without a Wii controller in hand, their realistic interpretation of Spider-Man's web-slinging and Wolverine's claw-slashing would only make them look like a fool. With the controller in-hand, at least they could say they were playing a game.

OK, fine...that staffer was me.

Regardless, for those of you who have large amounts of sanity on tap, you may still be looking forward to this title. Surely, with such super-dudes as Ghost Rider, Blade, Spider-Man, The Thing, and Thor, there's plenty of reason for you to want to pick up the Wiimote and beat down a henchman or thirty. If that's the case, then go ahead and drool over the 39 new screenshots after the link.
