Real console parts become virtual Virtual Console parts

This seems like an excellent use of a vintage PC: building a dedicated NES emulator. It's basically the same idea as the homemade MAME cabinet, but cheaper. dosman built a custom adapter (using a destroyed NES Four Score) that allowed him to attach NES controllers to vintage 486 PC, then connected a NES Satellite to the system. Now he can play archived NES games using a wireless controller! How novel!

We don't want to argue about the legality of emulation (we're not going to look into whether or not he owns the original cartridges, etc.) because we prefer to focus on how cool the whole project is. The 486 is just powerful enough to run Nesticle (itself a vintage program), and somebody finally figured out a reason for both the Four Score and the Satellite to exist.

Wii Warm Up: Through rose-tinted glasses

The appeal of the Virtual Console is obvious: nostalgia. The VC is jam-packed with memories from yesteryear, spilling over with wonderful software that defined our childhoods. But it isn't all lollipops and puppy dogs. Nostalgia can also be very misleading, and some of those packets of data you download from Nintendo's service can end up souring childhood memories.

Personally speaking -- and this will probably sound like heresy in some quarters, so brace yourselves -- I was left disappointed by Mega Man 2, a game I adored as an eleven-year-old, but one that now seems slightly dated, with its repeated leaps of faith and enemies that like to spawn directly beneath you. On the other hand, a game such as Super Mario Bros. 3 still feels like a breath of fresh air, almost two decades after it was released.

Thinking about this some more, we have three questions for you. One: which Virtual Console games don't hold the same magic for you as they once did? Two: have any titles aged better than you suspected they would? And three: have you ever held off from downloading a certain game, concerned that it may ruin one of those precious childhood memories?

NES coffee table is so much more

Kyle Downes' NES coffee table isn't just an awesome coffee table, oh no. Read up on the making of this beautiful piece of furniture on Kyle's blog, the appropriately named Ultra Awesome, and it's obvious that Downes' work is far more than a mere coffee table -- make the jump to see what else it can do.

NES gets digital plastic surgery

Before you fall to the ground from being stunned by such a beautiful NES, please note: it's a concept art, not a mod. We wish it were real, though, because we could definitely see ourselves clamoring to buy oldschool systems if they came in pretty packages like this. From the sleek shape, to the coloring, to the LEDs, to the controllers, the whole thing is just incredibly yummy. The best part is that it looks great without deviating too much from the original model -- kind of like Wii Fanboy's idea for a redesigned (and upgraded) Wii console.

Spanish digital artist Javier Segovia deserves the credit for this one. Nintendo, please take note. And be sure to check out some of the other retro mods we've featured here on the site in our gallery below!

The VC Advantage: How to Play Renegade

This week, during his VC Monday Madness video, Dave alluded to the fact that he had to enter a code to get past the first screen of Renegade. He was not exaggerating. Renegade is freaking impossible. Here's how Renegade works: three guys beat the crap out of you. Then you manage to get enough punches in between beatings to kill one of the guys, and another one walks out and beats the crap out of you.

Should you want to see the old ladies beating the crap out of you, or guys on motorcycles beating the crap out of you, you'll need to skip levels. Luckily, Technos included that functionality, presumably so people could experience the rest of their game. To skip levels, hold the down button on controller 2 and enter one of the following codes:
  • Stage 2: down, up, right, up, left, up, start
  • Stage 3: up, down, left, down, right, down, start
  • Stage 4: down, down, up, up, right, left, start
Now that you can see all of Renegade's content, the only thing left is figuring out why you would want to!

The VC Advantage is a weekly look at the secrets inside games -- not just cheat codes, but assorted trivia and oddities. We aim to bring back the feeling of the hint columns from game magazines, except when we do something else.

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 5/5/08

This week, we've got two titles on the Virtual Console tap. How are they? Well, we can't waste precious space here telling you about them. That's what the video above is for! And, if you can't check out our videos for some reason, head past the break for some screens and text.

VC Monday Madness: Renegade and Pokemon Puzzle League

This week, a pair of new titles are available on the Virtual Console system. For those of you paying attention, this comes as no surprise. As for the rest of you, we ask that you just pretend like we totally made Renegade happen. Like, it was all us.

This week's Virtual Console titles are:
  • Pokemon Puzzle League (N64, 1 - 2 players, 1,000 Wii Points
  • Renegade (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
As usual, these will be available for download after 9am PT (12pm for those of us on the east coast). Be sure to stop back and check out our video wrap-up, which should help gauge whether or not these games are worth your money.

Duck Hunt lamp will inspire thousands to hunt for cheap Zappers

One reason that the NES Zapper, even in orange, is superior to the Wii Zapper: it makes an attractive lamp. Craftster user fluffypants happened upon one of the clangy gun controllers and, somehow, saw the potential for a lamp. A real Duck Hunt cartridge would have been too small to function as a sturdy base, so she made an imitation NES cartridge from cardboard and affixed it to the Zapper lamp.

As if turning controllers into furniture didn't impress us enough, fluffypants turned a store-bought shade into a faithful 3D Duck Hunt scene with layers of cut foam. In fact, the shade is so awesomely Duck Hunt that the actual lamp seems a bit like overkill.

Virtually Overlooked: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

So far on the Virtual Console in North America, we've got Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, and Super Castlevania IV. Now, these fancy-schmancy Roman numerals may confuse the issue a bit, but it looks like something just might be missing from that list. Upon checking and re-checking, only one conclusion can be reached: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is, in fact, missing.

Okay, it's understood that every classic game can't appear immediately, as that would disrupt Nintendo's releases-every-week mojo, and we're only just now getting excellent titles like River City Ransom. But it almost seems as though someone at Nintendo had all the early NA Castlevania titles pasted to a dartboard, and a few drunken tosses determined which would be released and when. Where's Castlevania III? It's a mystery! You might as well tell us the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, or answer the question of just what a man is.

Man chats about his $15k NES game

James Baker collects games, but probably not in the same way that any of us collect games. Baker recently coughed up $15,000 for one of the 26 gold-colored NES carts that were originally manufactured for the Nintendo World Championships in 1990 (only twelve are still accounted for) -- in fact, we're fairly certain that his is the cart we posted about recently.

Speaking to Edge about his latest acquisition, Baker confesses that spending so much on a single videogame is "pretty crazy," but also says that he "doesn't really see it purely as a videogame."

Not only is the guy richer than us, he's also a lot braver -- when he received the cart, he popped it into his NES to give it a go! "I didn't even need to blow on the end of it to get it to work," he said, nonchalantly. You better believe that playing such a game would be the last thing on our minds. Instead, we'd be handling it very delicately, and then only after washing our hands several times over.

(Fun fact: $15,000 would cover the cost of 1.5m Wii Points, which in turn could be used to purchase the whole of the current U.S. Virtual Console line-up -- more than ten times over.)

Bulky peripheral offers NES gaming on the go

Now here's a neat idea! Gaming on the go! Why, we've never heard of such a thing!

In all seriousness, the FC Mobile doesn't look all that bad. Sure, anyone can enjoy their Game Boy Advance or DS on the subway, or even take Chrono Trigger through its paces while stuck in the car on the way to Grandma's house, but it takes a real pro to whip out something like this. Or someone who doesn't like to have multiple gaming platforms available on their handheld.

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 4/28/08

Now that we've finally gotten River City Ransom, Nintendo has saw fit to take a lazy week and only provide us with one new Virtual Console game to download. At least it's a good one though, as Double Dragon on the NES owns. Likely, many of you recall it doing just that as a child.

So hit up the video above, then head past the break for more.

VC Monday Madness: Double Dragon

This week sees a lone wolf of a release on the Virtual Console. And, to kill the sense of suspense as to what the game is (unless you like to, uh, read the title of posts), we already knew it was hitting today. That's not to say the game isn't good, though!

This week's Virtual Console release is:
  • Double Dragon (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)
As usual, be sure to stop by later for our video wrap-up of this week's releases, complete with commentary and direct-feed game footage. We hope to see you there!

VC Friday: Ninja Dragon Games

A trio of games this week on the PAL Virtual Console (all of which would be dead to us if "Ninja Dragon Games" actually existed), including one we totally want, one that will probably be undeservedly overlooked in favor of the one we totally want and, um, World Games (Commodore 64), which we're entirely unfamiliar with.

The former, obviously, is Double Dragon (NES), and although we plan to download Technos' landmark game with a quickness, we feel a bit bad for The Last Ninja (Commodore 64), which deserves some attention, if only for its amazing soundtrack. Check videos of all three out after the blue words, and marvel at how barrel jumping looks ... oddly compelling.
  • Double Dragon -- NES -- 500 Wii Points
  • World Games -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points*
  • The Last Ninja -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points*
* Only in Europe.

Virtually Overlooked: Kart Fighter

What if a bunch of Nintendo's world-famous franchise characters stopped adventuring and just got in a big fight? No doubt that would be an awesome game. You can just imagine the dollar (or appropriate currency) signs in the eyes of the person who came up with a surefire idea like that.

That was the idea behind Kart Fighter, created ... some time after Super Mario Kart was released, by an unknown Hong Kong developer. It's a 2D fighting game starring Mario and friends, in familiar settings based on the Mario games.

Nintendo totally ripped these guys off. Have they no respect for intellectual property?
