Wii Hulks out for charity

No, the Wii isn't getting bigger (unless you're buying a lot of peripherals!) -- the Hulk has taken it over! This hand-painted system is both random and spectacular; random because, well, we don't really think of the gigantic Hulk and Wii together that often, and spectacular because ... you did see it, right? At the moment, the modded Wii is bidless on eBay, but we expect that will change directly. A portion of the sale price will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, too, so you can feel good about Hulking out.

Oh, and, uh ... you get The Incredible Hulk game as a bonus. Y'know. In case you really just want that instead.

Not quite Mario Paint, but it'll have to do for now

Though the Wii seems like the perfect platform for a Mario Paint revival (as does the Nintendo DS), it's doubtful that you'll hear an announcement for that in the next year or so. In the meantime, if you have a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and are interested in the Wii homebrew scene, you can try out WiiPaint, a new program from Spanish programmer Kontakatilu.

So far, it looks like the version 1.0 application only lets you draw on the screen with a 28-color palette. While that doesn't seem like much functionality, it's a start! Pretty soon*, you'll be looping animations and composing Mega Man 2 themes!

*This probably won't happen "pretty soon."

Wii World 1-1: Super Mario Bros. mod

With Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and even Yoshi-themed Wii casemods already out in the wild, it was only a matter of time before someone personalized their console with everyone's favorite mascot, Mario. BeerBellyJoe sculpted the plumber's figure out of clay, affixing him to one of the Wii's side panels before painting the entire system. Interestingly, that cloud looks nothing like the bush!

It isn't visible in the image above, but there's a pipe on the other side that doubles as a Wii remote charger. The front of the decorated base also has an extra USB port and an LED mushroom that lights up when the port is in use. Hit the gallery below for more shots or click the "read" link to check out Joe's guide on how to make your own Mario Wii mod.

Take a shine to this custom NES

It's hard to argue against this modded, repainted NES in terms of looks, even if red and black isn't your thing. That sleek shine could put your eye out at twenty paces under the right lighting conditions, and the LEDs really set it off. But the best part? It works, and that's what really matters. We'd suffer even the most hideous NES so long as we could turn it on and have a chance to blow on a few old carts. In this case? Said old carts are Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. All that's missing is a Zapper so you can get your Duck Hunt on.

If you want to see this baby in its full, glossy glory, eBay seller metrosqurl provided a video, which you can scope out after the break.

When modding goes wrong

Well, you can't expect every Zelda mod to knock your pants off. In fact, you might want to put an extra pair of pants on to help shield your legs against the oh-god-this-is-awful rays emanating from this NES paint job. Consider the rest of your body tainted, your eyes suffering the worst of all.

What's that cone shape in the back? Does that paint look as sickening in real life as it does in this photo? And why is Link pouring glowing sludge out of his Gust Jar and into the Triforce?

Next to those offenses, the handwritten controller port numbers and "version" text are almost cute. We imagine the modder's thoughts behind those touches went like this: "Oh, it's nearly perfect ... I just need to write the word 'version' on it! Otherwise, people will think I just named this NES Zelda." Rumor has it that when you open the cartridge slot door, you can hear the system crying.

Jump past the break for a close-up of the Link figure dumping ooze onto this Teenage Mutant Nauseating Mod. Make sure to bring a friend -- it's dangerous to go alone!

The best Yoshi-emblazoned Wii we've seen today

Do you love Yoshi? Do all your friends know you as "The Yoshinator" because you're always talking about how awesome Yoshi is? Is your Yoshi vs. Robocop fanfic well-regarded? Have you somehow managed not to pick up a Wii yet, even though it's the future home of the Yoshi-fied Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

If so, you're probably already cracking open your Emergency Yoshi Gear Fund to bid on this custom-painted Wii. The only thing that would make this better would be the release of Kart Fighter for Virtual Console. An unofficial mod demands an unofficial game!

Painted and sprinkled with fairy dust

We were galled to hear that Tinker Bell isn't technically a noblewoman, excluding the Peter Pan pixie from taking part in Disney's Princess Games, but it looks like she'll be making an appearance on the Wii anyway, despite her common fairy blood. AcidMods administrator CyberPyrot stenciled Tink's outline onto his console and coated its shell with flip flop paint to add a touch of fay magic. Depending on what angle you're viewing it from, the casing's color can appear as blue, green, or purple.

There was an anxious moment, however, when a saboteur made a poisonous attempt to ruin the artwork. CyperPyrot held Tinker Bell's fading light in his trembling hands and turned to the audience, begging them to clap and yell out, "I do believe in fairies!" The viewers chanted the phrase over and over again, and wouldn't you know it, Tinker Bell was revived and cured! Think happy thoughts and take flight past the post break for more photos of the side panel project in-progress.

N64 gets a contemporary makeover

The classy white-with-blue light Wii theme can add a touch of awesome to any game console. We won't say anything to impugn the vaunted N64 in any way-- we think the white paint job makes it look damned cool. The paint is nice and smooth, too.

Color variations are nothing new for the N64, but Nintendo didn't release one in white. And they certainly didn't put LED's in it. What do you think about this mod? Can you think of any other consoles that would benefit from some white paint?

Wii Warm Up: Paint it Black

We were admiring this pair of Wiimote paint jobs, and thinking that in general we like the idea of making your Wiimote your own. There are other ways to do this, like writing your name on it with a Sharpie, or licking it, but we want to talk about painting.

Specifically, if you had a guarantee that your Wiimote would still work afterward, how would you paint yours? Would you go for the Atari or Van Halen motifs above? A NES controller theme? Authentic sprites? We know you are all delightfully creative, so come up with some weird Wiimote designs! Feeling bored? Get your MS Paint on! Then upload the result to Imageshack or your favorite image host and share it in the comments!

Pair of peripheral paint jobs pleases

Reader Paul probably has to fend a lot of people off his Wii; after all, he has the sweetest controllers around. While it takes a little artistic skill to pull this off, this is the kind of mod anyone with the courage to give it a shot could do, and that's why we can't resist showing it to you. Oh, if only we could manage to draw a straight line, much less paint one. We yearn for that extra dash of awesome.

The blue one looks like it should belong to someone who owns a Mini Cooper. You know, the kind with the Union Jack on the roof. Anyone else get that feeling? The red one just makes us think of Voldo, and now we want a Wii Soul Calibur that much more.

[Thanks, Paul!]

Rumor: Mario Paint 2 and Shiggy's new game

Got your grain of salt? Good, you're going to need it for this one.

Games Asylum is reporting that a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto in N Gamer magazine reveals a sequel to Mario Paint in Marionette. The site purports that this was a term that floated around back in the GameCube days. It was supposedly going to be an internet service for the console.

The site also states that Shigeru Miyamoto is working on a new Wii game that will utilize the Wiimote's speaker. The game is supposedly focused on 4-player action where the speaker in the Wiimote will call out the name of the player who has the next turn.

Again, all of this is just speculation at this moment as there is no evidence to back up these claims. Anyone care to check out the issue of N Gamer magazine this is supposed to come from?
