Eternity's Child will spend an eternity in America

Yeah, well, contrary to what we were saying earlier, it appears Eternity's Child will indeed be coming to the North American WiiWare service. Why? Well, it's hard to explain, but Alten8's CEO Paul Andrews spoke to WiiWare World and droned on about Luc Bernard, concepts, formats and the like.

The moral of the story is -- it's coming to America. After ratings are complete it will "go out as closely as possible in Europe and NA regions." That's about as far as details go, because it's being ported right now from the original PC version.

Is Luc Bernard the man? An army of now-happy WiiWare gamers will be the judge of that when the game finally hits the downloadable intertrons.

Born for Wii: Castlevania

For more than 20 years, gamers have been taking whip in hand to navigate Dracula's dark castle and defeat the villain and his minions again and again. Castlevania has evolved considerably over the past two decades, with recent games in the series largely adopting the incredibly popular Metroidvania style of gameplay that first showed up in 1997's Symphony of the Night. The older games typically offer a more classic platforming experience, although RPG elements such as a leveling system worked their way into the series even as early as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest in 1987.

Castlevania has also braved the world of (gasp!) three dimensions with mixed results over the years, but in general Konami has managed to retain the feel of the classic 2D Castlevania adventures on an expanded scale. Rumors of a Wii game titled Castlevania Judgment have been floating around the intertubes for quite awhile, but when the news finally broke -- a Wii Castlevania really was coming! -- it wasn't quite in the form people expected. The terms "3D fighting game" and "Castlevania" don't really go hand-in-hand. Even if the fighter is a success, Wii gamers deserve a true Castlevania experience, and that's why the series is this week's entry into the library of games that are Born for Wii.

Nancy Drew finds clues on the Wii

The fact that three PC-to-Wii adventure games were announced in one week is nothing short of crazy, but as adventure game junkies, we won't complain. The more that come along, the more likely at least one will be good and sate our thirst for point-and-click, right? Right?

This time Nancy Drew will be sleuthing her way onto the Wii in a port of The White Wolf of Icicle Creek. The same developer that handled the PC version (Her Interactive) will be porting this one, unlike the DS games which were made by Gorilla Systems. While the original didn't blow anyone's socks off their feet, it did get respectable reviews. Let's just hope for some refined point-and-click goodness with the Wiimote, and we should be all set.

Imabikisou's screenshots are slowly creeping up behind you



By themselves, these Imabikisou: Kaimei Hen screens barely register on the "scary scale" -- a highly advanced, experimental fear-measuring instrument that we purchased through eBay. When sorted into a collection, however, such as our massive gallery below, the images begin to grow a feeling of unease in your stomach as you peruse each shot.

Maybe it's the fact that none of the characters' faces are ever completely shown? Or perhaps it's the ambiguous, likely supernatural conflict that presumably connects all the images? We just hope that Sega decides to eventually bring this Chunsoft-developed visual novel, a port of a PlayStation 3 title (with two new chapters), to the States! Lock your doors, pull your curtains shut, and peek past the break for a creepy Imabikisou trailer.

Born for Wii: ChuChu Rocket!

In spite of its untimely demise, the Dreamcast still lives on in gamers' hearts due to a small library of now-classic titles, ranging from the grandiose, such as Shenmue, to the bizarre, like Space Channel 5. Falling closer to the latter on the weirdness scale is ChuChu Rocket!, a unique Dreamcast puzzler that's noteworthy for being one of the last great games to come out of Sega's Sonic Team (I mean, really -- Shadow the Hedgehog?), and for taking the Dreamcast online with four-player multiplayer -- no small feat in 2000. Just like Katamari Damacy, ChuChu Rocket! succeeds on the strengths of simple-but-addictive gameplay and irresistible charm.

ChuChu Rocket! makes no attempt to hide what it is -- a pure puzzler, free of all frivolities and unnecessary dead weight like a story. The concept is quite straightforward -- your only goal is to guide a group of mice (or, in some levels, just one mouse) into a rocket. In many cases, this involves avoiding cats who are roaming the puzzle terrain, waiting to make a mouse sandwich out of your little ChuChus. Both the mice and the cats move in the exact same fashion -- they head in a straight line until they hit a wall, which will cause them to turn right. It's a little like watching a group of lemmings, but, thankfully, the mice move just a bit faster.

Born for Wii: Katamari Damacy

Katamari Damacy rolled onto the gaming scene in 2004, bristling with the unanticipated fury of a budget title with mass-market appeal. Damacy's success and popularity in the United States, where it has quickly achieved a devoted cult following, is remarkable for a game that's so distinctly ... Japanese. However, anyone who's played the game can instantly grasp the appeal -- a delicious layer of charm coats the inner goodness of straightforward, addictive gameplay, and that's why Katamari Damacy is this week's game that is Born for Wii.

When the irresistibly alluring, slightly fruity King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys the heavens, his solution is a novel one -- roll up piles of junk and send them skyward to replace the fallen stars. Fortunately for us, he's far too lazy to do the grunt work himself. And that's where we come in as the tiny Prince, charged with the daunting task of restoring the stars to the sky with the aid of a magical ball (a katamari, of course) that sticks to damn near everything.

Pyroblazer lights a fire in the future


The trouble with first impressions? You only get to make one. They good news for Candella? They managed to put together a pretty fancy show, and Pyroblazer looks like an interesting uber-fast racer for the Wii.

In actual fact, the speed of the game seems to be the only disappointing feature so far. You can't come to a Nintendo system, peddle your futuristic racer, then expect uproarious support when it isn't up to our existing standards of speed. Fair enough, this is only the first trailer, so we'll wait until we're cruising through New Aperion before complaining that the game might have been designed by senior "safe" drivers.

Along with the trailer, several screens are available at WiiHD. The catch? There's a PC version in the works, and apparently the media is drawn from that. The graphics are good, but surely nothing the Wii can't handle, right? Guarded optimisn, thy name is Pyroblazer.

Born for Wii: Panzer Dragoon Orta

You plummet down a dark, twisting tunnel, barely registering the lights that flash past because you're too busy juking one moment and jinking the next, avoiding death with a flick of your wrist. As enemies crowd around you, spewing missiles from every direction, you expertly guide a stream of deadly fire, targeting your opponents with a steady hand and an uncanny precision that, within seconds, leaves you and your dragon alone, hurtling down an empty passageway toward destinations unknown.

Or at least, that's how it could be. Welcome to the inaugural edition of Born for Wii, a new weekly column looking back into the annals of gaming for titles that could be adapted for the Wii in new and exciting ways. Wii Warm Up: Do you want Resident Evil Zero localized?

We were talking about Capcom and the Japan-exclusive Wii port of Resident Evil Zero yesterday, so we figured the question is valid. Sure, we all would like to see Capcom's newest entry in the series, Resident Evil 5, ported to the Wii, but what about this GameCube remake?

Do you want the game localized to your region? Big Resident Evil fan? We are, so we're usually quick to pick up a title even if it just has a new coat of paint on it. What say you all?

Wii Warm Up: From PSP to Wii

Here's one that sure to result in some early-morning bile: are PSP ports an insult to Wii owners? Even though we claim allegiance to another handheld, we're big admirers of the PSP's hardware, which is pretty impressive -- but it's still a handheld for all of that. And we're not even getting some of the best games, either, but years-old titles and multi-platform schlock.

Of course, we've seen a lot of PS2 ports, too. Which is worse?

Rumor: Ryo Hazuki to enjoy capsule toys on Wii?


We don't normally see any reason to post rumors from the GameFAQs forum, but this time there's a magazine scan involved, so that's ... marginally more plausible. GameFAQs poster Saikobooru found a blurb in the Swedish magazine Gamereactor (or at least a convincing-ish fake of a scan from Gamereactor) stating that, like other Sega classics NiGHTS, The House of the Dead, and Sega Bass Fishing, Shenmue will make a return appearance on the Wii.

According to this rumor, the new Shenmue will be more like the House of the Dead on Wii than NiGHTS: in other words, ported versions of the two games rather than a new game, with some new minigames added. And now you can commence the inevitable debate about whether Shenmue is boring or the best game ever.

Rogue Trooper serves a cold dish of revenge on the Wii

Reef Entertainment recently announced that a Rogue Trooper game will be headed to the Wii, subtitled The Quartz Massacre. If you haven't heard of Rogue Trooper before, it features a bad-ass, blue-skinned soldier who likes to take revenge on people that mess with him and his comrades. He can also assign himself the skills and "personalities" of fallen friends, thanks to a spiffy futuristic biochip.

The plot for The Quartz Massacre is the same for that of the 2006 Rogue Trooper releases (available for the original Xbox, the PS2, and PCs), leading many to reasonably speculate that this Wii version will be a port. Reef promises that the Wii's controller will add more immersion to the third-person shooter, though (à la Resident Evil 4, we assume), and Rebellion is also reported to have added tweaks and polish its last-gen endeavors.

We have mixed feelings about this game: on the one hand, the console could use more shooters of this nature, but on the other hand, it already has a full plate of ports. Since we didn't play the well-reviewed, last-gen iteration of Rogue Trooper, however, we're willing to be open-minded. If Rebellion can pull off a fun and polished game, we'll have no qualms.

Okami got a face lift (comparison video)

Already having Okami for the PS2 is the most valid excuse for not buying the game on the Wii. If you fall into this group, you're probably still tempted to make the purchase because of the added motion controls. Should that not be enough to get your wallets in action, though, you might want to check out this side-by-side comparison video. We already knew that the Wii version looked better, but seeing the two compared with each other shows just how much.

The colors are much more vibrant on the Wii, and for a game that's main draw is its beautiful artistic style, that's kind of big deal. The 16:9 support doesn't hurt matters, either. Have any of you played both Okamis and noticed the difference for yourselves?

Wii Fanboy Review: Baroque

I'll be frank -- when I first started Baroque, I hated it. Being thrown into such a strange and ugly world with the barest of backstories was completely disorienting. I had no idea where to go or what to do, and didn't have the luxury of taking my time to explore because my vitality meter was plummeting from the get-go. One character (known as the Coffin Man) kept yelling "goddamnit!" at me, and when I finally got to the place where I was supposed to be, it wasn't long before I died.

If I hadn't been reviewing this game, I probably would have quit right there. But, since it's (clearly) considered bad form to write a review after only twenty minutes of playtime, I trekked on -- and I'm extremely glad that I did. Once I delved deeper into the world of Baroque, I realized that first impressions aren't always the best impressions.

Now that you've kindly read through my personal aside, let's move on to the actual review, shall we?
