Rumor: Valve to put out a Wii game around 2010?

Apparently, people at the Valve offices have been dying to make a game for the Wii. A game that will allow those with families to enjoy gaming with their young ones (Valve's games are usually on the Mature side of the ESRB scale). Well, despite Valve liking the Wii platform, if it were to happen, it's years off.

This isn't a confirmation (we're treating this as a rumor since JeuxFrance, you know, doesn't source anyone), but the word seems to be that around 2010 we could see a Wii title if Valve is down. We guess they're busy with a sequel to Portal or something? Yeah, that must be it.

Valve likes the look of Wii

Valve's take on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360? They're not massively keen. But what about the Wii? Nintendo's console is rarely mentioned by Valve bods; indeed, it's fair to say that Valve and Nintendo may not seem like an obvious partnership, given the former's reputation as a developer of PC games (and a damn fine one, at that). Then again, marketing director Doug Lombardi seems to think the Wii might be worth investigating. Doug, we totally agree!

Chatting to videogaming247.com, Lombardi revealed that Valve would be more likely to develop for the Wii than either of its more powerful rivals, thanks to the fact that "it's growing, there's already a huge user-base, and it's fun." What's more, Lombardi reckons that getting Source (Valve's proprietary 3D game engine) running on the Wii would be realistic: "Source is really scaleable. We can do that."

Oh, man. Half-Life 2 or Portal with the Wiimote, anybody?

Portal's 'Still Alive' done in Mario Paint [update]

If there's one thing the internet sorely needs, it's more Portal. Jokes about cakes and lies, maniacal AI, and the above song have been the driving force behind the internet fascination with the game. Oh, and we hear some folks enjoyed playing Portal, as well.

The above song is taken from the end credits of the game, however it lacks the spoilers since there are no lyrics. So feel free to give it a listen. It's scary-close to the original.

Update: It appears the song was made in Mario Paint Composer, a program for your computer. Thanks to all of the commenters for pointing this out! It's still an impressive video if you ask us, though.

Revolutionary: GlovePIE v.30, The Great Equalizer

Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

So you've tuned in to Revolutionary expecting to see the dramatic conclusion of the Controller Showdown. Well, as I was evaluating games to use in the matchup, I found myself revisiting old scripts I'd put aside, and building new scripts for games which wouldn't be fit to judge the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote and SIXAXIS. I realized that because of the recently updated build of GlovePIE, my passion for scripting has been re-ignited!

You see, the latest version of GlovePIE supports the SIXAXIS, Xbox 360 control pad, and standard PC control pads, on top the already robust support for Wii Remotes and attachments. There's also a new function which allows you to easily write scripts for any and all of these controllers universally. So, before we commence with Round 2, let's take a look at the GlovePIE update that will figure heavily in the big battle.

Super Mario Galaxy gets a few GDCA nods

It's nice when your peers recognize your work. So, Miyamoto and co. must be beaming with happiness to hear that Super Mario Galaxy got the nod in several categories for the Game Developer's Choice Awards. If our opinion means anything (it doesn't), we liked the game a lot.

Overall, Super Mario Galaxy gets its hat tossed into two categories, although many* might consider them to be the best two categories: Best Game Design and Game of the Year. It's up against some tough competition, however, as undersea romp Bioshock and Portal, which has seemed to help pie's ugly cousin cake propel itself into the stratosphere of popularity, will undoubtedly give Mario a run for his coin (or stars).

Head past the break for all of the nominees.

Dude, where's my Portal?

We don't know where this rumor came from, but there have been whisperings of a version of Valve's cake-pushing (it's a lie, we hear), environmental puzzlefest involving some kind of weird gun making its way onto the Wii. In true baby-punching* fashion, Valve has shot down rumors of the title's release on the Wii, as rep Doug Lombardi stated that it's "an extremely interesting idea, but there's nothing in product."

Of course, as with most of these gaming rumors, it just won't be taken out back and shot like a certain yellow dog. Doug added "not yet, anyway," at the end of his quote there, leaving us all wondering if this could happen. And, if it did, wouldn't it be the perfect Wii Ware download?

*Nobody at Valve punched a baby, to our knowledge. What they do on their own time is their business.

Possibility of some Valve action on the Wii

Looks like the folks at Valve are a little late to the Wii party. We can forgive them; after all, they've been busy crafting some of the best games ever. But in this new interview with GameTrailers, Valve's Director of Marketing, Doug Lombardi admits that they didn't really get the console's potential. "I'm just going to be blunt with you -- we missed the Wii," he said. Well, at least he's honest. While Lombardi said they have no plans at the moment to develop anything for the Wii, he did add that he "wouldn't be surprised" if someone came up with an idea they just had to pursue. Well. At least now we have a candidate for today's most vaguely optimistic news award.

He did assure us that they are all "super big fans" of Nintendo over there at Valve. We're certainly reassured. Now get in the studio and build us some games! We've included the video after the jump, though the Wii-relevant information is all the way at the end.
