Korea's Wii controllers are a steal

As if Korean Wii gamers weren't lucky enough, what with all the preorder incentives publishers have been handing out over there, apparently, shops in the East Asian country are selling Wii remotes, nunchuks, and Classic Controllers at hella cheap prices.

Blogger Nuck Rumas shot the photo above of a Korean Lotte Mart's Wii shelf, and, in addition to the Wii system's foreign packaging, you can see some surprisingly low-priced accessories. Wii remotes are marked at ₩28,000 (approx. $27) -- compare that to the $40 stores usually charge in the U.S. Of course, compared to Wii remote prices in several other territories, $40 is a bargain, too:
  • Japan: ¥3,800 (approx. $36)
  • Canada: $44.99 (approx. $44)
  • Australia: $69.95 (approx. $67)
  • New Zealand: $99.95 (approx. $76)
  • Europe: €39 (approx. $61)
  • UK: £29.99 (approx. $59)
Also, Classic Controllers and nunchuks in Korea both sell for ₩15,000 (approx. $15), compared to the $20 U.S. retailers ask for them. That might not sound like much of a difference, but keep in mind that shops in Korea don't charge an extra sales tax at the register. It all adds up!

Wii Wheel MSRP not $15, after all

If you were worried that you'd have to give up your first-born child (which we at Nintendo Wii Fanboy calculate is worth about $15) for the Wii Wheel, we have some reassuring news. Although GameStop recently posted an ad which gave us the impression that the Wii Wheel would retail for $14.99, Nintendo Power has us thinking differently. According to the scan seen above, the wheel's MSRP will actually be five dollars less, costing a more reasonable $9.99.

So, if you're planning on getting a few extra of these, we recommend doing so at stores that don't charge above the suggested retail price.

Deca Sports price announced for NA

Hudson is being smart about the company's new sports game, Deca Sports, which will hit North American Wiis on May 13th. Since the little white console already comes bundled with Nintendo's game, the bigwigs at Hudson probably knew they couldn't price Deca Sports too highly. That's why we were pleased to hear of the title's $29.99 price tag. Just ten dollars higher and we would have been a lot more hesitant about this game, but $30 hits our sweet spot.

Where's your sweet spot on this title, though? Do you still wish it cost less, or would you have payed even more to try out Hudson's sporting events?

Wii Wheel pricing leaked by GameStop

According to a recent weekly ad from GameStop (pictured above), the Wii Wheel will end up costing $14.99 in the U.S. (Note: Although this price for a standalone Wii Wheel has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo, GameStop tends to be accurate about these things.)

That seems like a lot of money for a plastic shell, don't you think? It's true that the Wii Zapper costs more, but at least that comes with a Link's Crossbow Training pack-in. Plus, we don't think we're being too hypocritical, considering we haven't bough ourselves a Zapper, either.

Mario Kart Wii will come with a Wii Wheel, so if you find the experience of playing with it to be incredibly awesome, you might decide to fork over the extra cash to buy some more. Being the cheapskates we are, though, we'd much rather get used to playing with the Wiimote alone, or just hook-up our GameCube or Classic controllers.

Wii Fit will strain Australian wallets in May

Australians only have fifty-eight days (approximately five hamburgers, two milkshakes, eight orders of fries, and seven chocolate bars) before getting glute guilted into buying Wii Fit. Nintendo announced today that the fitness title, which is meant to imbue healthy lifestyles, will be coming to Australia on May 8th. That's just in time for you Aussies to give it to your mums for Mother's Day, but then again, a present like that has the potential to make any woman cry.

You'd also have to really love your mom to spend $149.95 AUD ($139 USD) on her, assuming that she already owns a Wii. Even the thought of spending that on yourself is daunting for a nongame, although the pricing isn't completely unexpected -- after all, the UK and European prices equate to about the same.

Does that make it okay, though? We suspect the answer to that is a resounding "no."

Wii Warm Up: Virtual Console

We've shared some of our not-so-secret desires for the Virtual Console with you, and every week, we revisit the topic, thanks to our own JC Fletcher -- but how do you feel about how the VC is shaping up? It seems likely that there's at least one game you'd like to see that isn't up there yet (hi2u, StarTropics, insert frowny-face, etc.), but overall, there is a pretty good selection so far, with more to come. What we want to know is: how do you feel about the line-up so far? What about pricing? The selection of systems? Are you enjoying the VC more or less than you were months ago?

In Defense of the Virtual Console's pricing

We've surveyed your irritation with the Virtual Console's rates and even had you calculate the exact amount of Wii points you've been swindled out of so far, but VGamp's Chris Sinclair argues that the game downloads aren't expensive at all. Chris listed eleven reasons to support his claim, even admitting that he would be willing to pay more for the retro titles. While he might come across as an inflexible apologist, some of his points make sense.

According to Chris, you're getting a deal whenever you make a purchase on the Shopping Channel. For example, let's say that you put out the cash for Soldier Blade, a title that sometimes sells for $50+ on eBay. You're scoring a discount on a relatively rare game that's guaranteed to work decades from now, and you don't even have to pay for the TurboGrafx-16 console or the controllers to play it with. As an added bonus, many of these emulated games look better than they ever did before.

Alright, so we're still not entirely convinced that Altered Beast is worth the 800 Wii points Sega is asking for, but we can see where Chris is going with this. What do you think? Does the pricing seem justified after considering his points, or do you still feel like you're being fleeced?

Virtual Console cost calculator

According to the poll results we posted earlier today, 70% of our readers think Nintendo's Virtual Console pricing is way too expensive. If you're anything like us, however, you didn't let that get in the way of purchasing a few retro games anyway. Gunstar Heroes? The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? Overpriced or not, how are we supposed to pass on that?

We spotted an online calculator that adds up the total amount of Wii points you've spent or can expect to spend on the current Virtual Console lineup (Sorry, North American releases only!). If you have some Wii points saved up, the application will even display how much more points you will have left or will need to buy.

So how much has Nintendo robbed you of so far? How many more Wii points will you have to shell out in order to complete your dream collection? Drop a line in our comments and let us know!

Japanese Wii event confirmed: September 14

Call in the rumor patrol, 'cause the triumvirate is complete. Nintendo has scheduled press events for Japan and the United States for September 14, and Europe the following day. Three major regions, three events -- there's little doubt that this, finally, will be the information we've been waiting for. In just two weeks, we should finally find out when we'll all be lining up on Wii-volution day.

The trio of press events comes a week before the Tokyo Game Show. As anticipated, it seems Nintendo wants their announcement to stand out, rather than have it come as just part of the announcements from another show. So here it is, folks! Last chance to make your predictions. The clock is ticking.

[Thanks, DerekJ!]

Europe gets Wii pricing ... sort of

In an interview in Leipzig, Bernd Fakesch, head of Nintendo's German operations, let slip an important detail about Europe's Wii. He said that the console would cost -- are you ready for it? Less than 250 euros!

Doesn't that sound familiar? Yeah, we thought so. The only real newsworthy bit from this interview was rather off-the-cuff: Fakesch said pricing "has not been decided" yet. My, cutting it a little close, aren't we?

[Thanks, Adrock!]

Virtual Console titles a virtual bargain [Update]

One of the biggest concerns outside of what kind of content we would be seeing on the Virtual Console was just how much that content would cost the gamer. Well, Iwata has finally revealed the pricing and you'll be able to download these titles onto the Wii for less than $10 US. Pricing titles at ¥500 and ¥1,000, or $4.50 and $8.99 US, makes these games very affordable, and should bring more profits than the classic NES releases we saw hit the GBA for $19.99 US a pop.

In offering product at a very close price to what the average game download on Microsoft's Xbox Live service is costing, Nintendo could very well dominate the downloadable market if they release more games on their service than the competition, something very possible thanks to the help of Sega and Hudson.

[Thanks Spambot!]

[Update: It appears the pricing here is for NEW GAMES, not Virtual Console titles. We blame less-than-perfect translation software online and beg for your forgiveness.]

Rumor: Get a Wii for free

A tipster sent in some information on what he believes Nintendo's Wii pricing will look like to Infendo yesterday evening. The tip says that the prospective Wii customer would essentially get their Wii for free if they succeeded to purchase either 4 games for the console or 3 games for the console and an extra controller with the nunchuck attachment. Obviously, without official backup we have to assume this is all lies, but it would be an interesting way to "sell" the console and the proposed cost of $199.99 falls in line with current predictions of pricing.
