Nintendo missing out on $1.3 billion because of shortages

Did you know that every time someone can't find a Wii console to buy, God kills a kitten? Okay, maybe not, but the shortages are definitely costing Nintendo a lot of money. The total adds up to an estimated $1.3 billion, which we're sure Nintendo would like to have in its pocket.

Analyst James Lin of the MDB Capital Group believes that Nintendo could sell twice as many Wiis as it's making each month. Since 1.8 million consoles are produced on a monthly basis, that means Nintendo might be missing out on a heck of a lot of sales. Just because it's not making as much money as it could be, though, doesn't mean that the company is hurting for it. In fact, we think Nintendo will be just fine.

Nintendo says they're making 1.8 million Wiis a month

Hey, if they are, we haven't seen any of them.

Store shelves are barren, with only a fine film of dust to rest atop their usually proud selves. Online retailers often respond to requests to purchase a console with nothing more than a "404 - You're boned" or "Ha Ha." All searches for the console have come up fruitless, often leaving one in such a sad state that suicide is not only considered, but seen as a better fate.

Well, apparently Nintendo has been manufacturing quite a bit of the beautiful white console that could. George Harrison, who is due to call it quits anytime now, said that the company is pumping out 1.8 million units a month, commenting "We're at a rate now worldwide of about 1.8 million Wiis produced every month, and that's going to sustain itself until we get on top of this." He adds that Nintendo analyzes supply distribution every few weeks, citing that it is an "embarrassment of opportunity."

Wii will fail to meet demand this holiday

As hard as Nintendo is trying to quench the thirst of the market by upping its production of Wii consoles, things don't look good for the holiday season. If you have someone on your gift list that is asking for a Wii console, your best bet is to pretend you never knew them. Or, tell everyone you know one of their most intimate secrets in the hopes that they will no longer be your friend. It's the only way you're going to get out of the difficult task ahead of those brave enough to attempt picking one of the consoles up this season.

In proper spin fashion, Reggie is quick to claim that it isn't merely a production issue, but that the demand for the system is just ridiculously high. Regardless of how he spins it, we know it's a production issue. And, given that how hard it is to meet the demand, isn't it better for a company to not be able to keep up with demand than that of the demand being nowhere near the output of the company?

Nintendo has to delay production increase

According to Taiwan component manufacturers, due to the short supply of chips, Nintendo's plan to up the production of Wii consoles worldwide will have to wait until some time later, which will be next year, most likely. Originally thought to alleviate the console drought during the second half of this year, Nintendo is now forced to stand by and wait before kicking their production into overdrive. Regardless of shortages, the Wii has still sold over 10 million worldwide.

Iwata: Expect more Wiis in stores this month

The whole text of Nintendo's financial results briefing is worth reading (and would be mandatory if we could assign homework), but we'd especially like to point out this quote from Satoru Iwata: "As this month's production will be sold in the worldwide markets by the end of the next month, a small increase is expected at the retail outlets from next month." We knew that Nintendo was looking into expanding production, but could we already see results?

This report is from the end of April, so "next month" probably refers to May. We hope the statement is accurate and that the supply of Wiis increases from none to some very soon!

Nintendo decides to make some more Wiis

Not sure if you guys have heard about this, since it doesn't really get much press, but apparently it's been hard to purchase Wii systems in stores. We know-- we're surprised too, but it seems that Nintendo's supply hasn't been sufficient to meet demand.

In a statement given to GamesIndustry.biz, a Nintendo representative said that they are (finally) going to increase global production, with a goal of producing 14 million systems in this fiscal year. Hopefully they don't all end up in Japan! If this bears out, and Nintendo finally does get around to speeding up production, this may mean the end of availability as we know them.

Nintendo searching for more Wii manufacturers

Nintendo has struggled to meet the Wii's demand in every region, so much so that retailers have accused the company of planning "strategic shortages." Four months after the console's initial release, it's still unlikely that you'll be able to find a Wii on store shelves.

Up until now, Foxconn Precision Components has been the sole manufacturer behind the Wii's assembly. Nintendo hopes to increase its production by taking on an additional manufacturing partner, researching offers from Asustek Computer, Compal Electronics, Inventec, and Wistron.

It's great that Nintendo is looking to increase the amount of systems it ships out, but how long will it be before we see the benefits of this partnership? It was already evident that the Wii's supply was constrained months ago -- why didn't Nintendo bring in a new manufacturer then?

All kinds of crazy Wii production

Work it!According to some silly subscription-only news service (briefing.com, for the unabashedly curious), Nintendo has completed production of some 2 million units in Q3 alone. Nintendo, remember, had only promised 4 million by the end of the calendar year, and 6 million by fiscal year's end (March 31st). But with all of October and half of November to roll out the units, the figures may jump up even higher. The report claims that Nintendo has at least 7 million planned for Q4 production, and even up to 9 million seems feasible. That's potentially eleven million Wiis by year's end.

It seems that the later-than-expected release date of November 19th was not a result of hardware shortages, but rather to give software developers a chance to properly finish their titles. While all these consoles sitting around, having tea and just waiting for the 19th is a nice picture, it's also important that Nintendo maintain the image of must-have and hard to find. It's a delicate balance, to supply the demand and yet seem like you can't ... hopefully, Nintendo can pull it off.

Broadway chip production well underway since July

IBM announced that their custom-designed Broadway chip for the Nintendo Wii has been sitting in Nintendo's hands since July, resting ever-so-silently, poised to strike like a Puma silently stalking its prey. Ron Martino, director of IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions, commented that production fears should be nonexistent as "We have been shipping well within this quarter (July)," and going on further to say that "In fact, we have shipped a significant volume in this quarter."

All well and good, but what about you, the one craving the Wii so bad you've been drawing pictures of it in your notebook, perhaps encapsulated by a red heart with a cartoonish arrow sticking through it reading "Nintendo & Chad 4 Ever?" What does it mean for you?

First off, don't ask how we've seen your notebook. Second, you should be thinking "Well, if Nintendo had these chips since July, why haven't they been manufacturing Wiis?" That last one, we really don't have an answer for.

So would Nintendo go the way Sega did with the Saturn, springing it upon gamers much like that Puma in the first paragraph leaped upon its prey? Probably not, but it makes that event coming on the 14th that much more interesting.

Nintendo says Wii production going smoothly

Earlier this week, rumors started cropping up about possible delays in the production of the Wiimote. Yeah, we know. When those little scamps get together, they're worse than a sewing circle. But Nintendo took the time to answer this one.

"The reports are entirely rumour and speculation," a rep told GamesIndustry.biz. "I can confirm that the Wii is very much on course for a Q4 release." And we're glad to hear it.
