Wiimote enables amazing doodling device

Johnny Lee, last seen letting his fingers do the waggling, is back with more Wiimote mods that put Nintendo's own work to shame. Using the Wiimote's infrared camera, an IR light attached to a pen, and some custom software, he created a virtual whiteboard system that allows him to control a computer touch-screen style using either a projector or an LCD.

If you have an LCD and something capable of emitting infrared light (or have access to a Radio Shack), and if you can Bluetooth your way to Wiimote awesomeness (which we unfortunately cannot), then really, you should be messing with this right now.

Up your Wii Sports immersion factor

Want to get the most out of your Wii Sports experience? Well, if you don't have a handy movie theater at your disposal, you can always try the same solution our own Mike Sylvester favors: hooking your Wii up to a projector. From the photos at Flickr of Wii Sports on an Epson MovieMate 72, we can't help but think that would make for some nice games of golf or bowling. If only there were more photos! Click through to see this one in all its full-sized glory, and check out the others here. The colors are just maddeningly rich. Now we're kinda feeling like throwing down on a game or two ....

Wii Projector does not inspire confidence

Okay, we'll start with the good news: this projector, while compatible with everything with an A/V out, was designed with the Wii in mind. It even includes a Wii composite cable in the package. And it's white, which is the universal sign of "this thing is made for the iPod Wii"

The bad news (which sounds like good news at first): this projector is cheap. We appreciate it when things are inexpensive, but $170 is suspiciously cheap for a projector. Even one that doesn't display in HD. Of course, we aren't sure we'd trust sensitive equipment like this from the same company that brought us the dashboard sensor bar stand at any price.

According to the website, it displays in a resolution of 960*234, which is definitely a mistake of some kind. We hope it's a mistake in the product description and not in the product design. Check after the break for a screenshot from Ghost Squad, resized to 960*234. We didn't use a widescreen game for this exercise, but at a vertical resolution of 234 pixels, it wouldn't be much better.

A very different look at Wiis and projectors

This week's excellent Revolutionary explored the use of projection screens for playing Wii. This item from Yujin, on the other hand, uses a projector to allow you to look at pictures of characters who appear in Wii games.

The advantages are obvious: this projector fits on a keychain and comes in packages of eight for only $23. The only setback is that it doesn't do anything but project a single image of a Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, or Wario Ware character.

Also in today's NCSX shop update: cheap ($25.90) copies of Escape from Bug Island and Alien Syndrome. For use with actual televisions only, of course.

Revolutionary: Super Size Mii

Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

It may be time for Nintendo to concede that we've entered the HD-era. Anyone looking to buy a new television will have an increasingly difficult time finding a "classic" SD tube amongst the pristine plasmas, elegant LCoS, lavish LCDs, dazzling DLPs, and (soon-to-come) sexy SEDs. And the technologies behind today's televisions are benefiting greatly from economies of scale, making it easier for consumers to consider going big on their next TV purchase.

For too long, big screen gaming had been confined to dollar-munching arcade machines and reruns of Silver Spoons, but more and more people are finding out what it feels like to have a truly super Mario kicking gargantuan goombas across the Mushroom Kingdom. If you haven't yet been bitten by the big bug, today I'll make you feel the itch.
