Wii Warm Up: The others

We usually use the Wii Warm Up to discuss and dissect Wii-related minutiae, but today we want to know more about your non-Nintendo gaming habits. Which other consoles do you own (current-gen or otherwise), which is your favorite (after the Wii, naturally), and what did you last play/are you currently playing through?

Former Sony boss predicts Sony and Nintendo tie at end of current gen

If one was to make an estimation as to the end of the console race today, it would appear Nintendo has things on lock. But, the future isn't always certain, so some folks don't mind coming up with their own guesses as to where we're headed in the years to come. The latest person to toss their 2 pennies into the fountain is former SCEE president Chris Deering. He thinks that come 2011, the Wii and the PS3 will be in a dead tie.

How can this be, with the monthly NPD numbers and weekly Japanese sales figures showing Nintendo selling truckloads of its hardware? Well, for Sony, Deering predicts that combined sales of its PS3, PS2 and PSP devices will be around 240 million units, which he also predicts for Nintendo, but they'll have done it with only the DS and Wii. For the Xbox 360, Deering predicts it will have a base of 40 million units.

240 million units, though? That's just lunacy, in our eyes. But, hey, if anyone can reach that figure, it's Nintendo. As for Sony doing it, well, there are a lot of PS2 consoles out there ...

We guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Rumor: Play PSP games on Wii before they're ported

The portbuster may have arrived -- according to the French TeamShift site, they've created an early version of a PSP emulator for Wii. Normally, we wouldn't report on such a thin rumor (there's only a single suspect photograph and a statement), but the idea of surpassing the flood of ports and going directly to the source is actually pretty amusing.

But, since it's probably fake, the whole issue is likely moot.

Blazepro Classic Controller: Dude, get your own design

The Blazepro Classic Controller claims to be the first third-party Classic Controller, which isn't exactly true -- the Hori Fighting Stick works as a Classic, and plugs into the Wiimote in the same way. But as far as we know, it's the first traditional-style third-party Classic Controller. And it should be a hit among Monster Hunter fans.

The product description at SuperUFO says that Blazepro's controller "is looks like a squareness, but the function has no difference between the origin one." It doesn't just looks like a squareness -- it looks exactly like a PSP. As in "somebody made a mold of a PSP as the basis for their controller." It's even got an area at the top that looks like the UMD slot!

Wii Warm Up: From PSP to Wii

Here's one that sure to result in some early-morning bile: are PSP ports an insult to Wii owners? Even though we claim allegiance to another handheld, we're big admirers of the PSP's hardware, which is pretty impressive -- but it's still a handheld for all of that. And we're not even getting some of the best games, either, but years-old titles and multi-platform schlock.

Of course, we've seen a lot of PS2 ports, too. Which is worse?

About the worst camera work ever: Super Smash Bros. on a PSP

While the idea of a portable Super Smash Bros. has us all tingly in our everywhere, we find this video only makes us nauseous. Not because the game is being played on Sony's PSP system, but rather because the person filming this apparently had an epileptic seizure whilst doing so. It's a shame, really, because we would've liked to see how this played. Oh, and heard, as well. The video has no sound.

Crush developer open to Wii sequel

Crush, the PSP's 2D/3D puzzle platformer, may have waggling in its future, according to an interview with Paul Mottram, senior producer at Crush developer Zoë Mode. We're talking faint "may" and distant future, since this was all idle speculation on his part.

When asked the weirdly pointed question of why they made a PSP game instead of putting it on a Nintendo platform, Mottram responded, "There is no reason why it couldn't be transferred to multiple different platforms especially the Wii, DS and PS2 and this is something we are thinking about."

He went on to describe the level editor they wanted to include, but couldn't. That definitely sounds like something well-suited to the DS or Wii, right?

New Manhunt 2 trailer grabs the web by the throat

We do so love the smell of violence in the morning, and the new Manhunt 2 trailer definitely offers a sweet taste of what's to come. But what this trailer really does is get us excited about the story. Jack Thompson may want you to think Manhunt 2 is nothing but a murder simulator, but this trailer tells a different tale. The collection of disjointed images is jarring and loose, like broken memories plucked from nightmares, and we can't wait to see some of these full scenes play out on screen. Hit the jump to see for yourself.

Comparing graphics on Wii to PSP

Oh, those Sega Nerds are at it again.

They're taking a look at Alien Syndrome, a title that was announced mid-December. While they're quick to note that the graphics on the PSP-version of the game are comparable to that of the Wii installment, they fail to realize that both titles use the same engine. In fact, we found out during GDC that the engine itself was specifically designed with the PSP in mind.

So, does it bother you that a Wii title looks almost identical to that of a PSP title?

Playing Wii on a PSP

Looks like PSP users are so keen to get in on the excitement that is Wii that they'll even put up with a six second lag, just to get in on the action. You can't buy desperation publicity like that.

No, we kid. While we do like to poke fun at everyone who isn't us, this is actually pretty interesting. Owner of what is apparently a PSPwii combo, obiwan222222 (the extra pair of twenty-twos is what makes it original) essentially set up his PSP as a monitor to continue the quest to meld everything with the Wii. Next up? The toaster!

Check out the video on PSP Fanboy to see this one in action. We would have liked to have seen him try to actually play the Wario Wario he was spinning in the video, if nothing else. Lag would translate to a very short playtime experience there ... or a very challenging one.

Manhunt 2 marketing aims to scare

Fellow blogger (and the brunt of many Sony-based jokes here at the Fanboy) Andrew Yoon recently received a mysterious letter from the "Dixmor Hospital for the Criminally Insane." Now, mind-in-the-gutter jokes aside, Andrew was really scared because he had not only never heard of such an institution, he also never gives out his address (trust us on this one, we keep trying to mail him a better handheld system). Inside this mysterious letter were two bloodied bracelets featuring the logo for Manhunt 2, as well as a letter explaining a bit about the game's supposed protagonists, Danny Lamb and Leo Kasper.

Picture of the letter and bracelets have been embedded past the post break.

Japanese Hardware Sales: 1 Jan - 7 Jan: Movie script edition

Do it!FADE IN:

INT. POLICE STATION

Dimly lit, with a cold, dripping sound in the background. Only a table and a single chair adorn the room. Smoke wafts from a cigarette found in the mouth of a young black detective, expressionless. Off near the door is another detective, even younger. He is twin-screened. He looks slightly nervous.

Kaz takes stab at Nintendo, we laugh hard

Sony's own Kaz Hirai (Riiiiiiidge Raaaacerrrrr!) recently spoke with IGN during CES 2007 about the PS3 and Blu-ray in general. Of course, most of his time spent with the IGN folk was to talk up his hardware, however he did take a moment to speak his mind on the incredibly popular Wii by saying "a worldwide launch for any console is quite ambitious. In fact, it has never been done before. I suppose if we had simply done a mild upgrade to the PS2 and not pushed the envelope so hard, it would have been easier on ourselves. However, if we did that every time, we wouldn't be Sony."

Isn't he hilarious guys? Look Kaz, we're sorry your company decided to manufacture a system that is so expensive as to exclude the common consumer and has no fun launch games. Face it, the only reason anyone is considering buying a PS3 is for Metal Gear Solid 4. Don't be a sore loser, guy!

LGC wrap-up: How did the Wii do?

Note: This editorial is the opinion of David Hinkle and does not represent the opinion of Wii Fanboy, Joystiq, or Weblogs Inc.

Leave it to the PSP guys to be immature and bait us into an all-out fanboy war. Especially one they cannot ever hope to win. While we'd like to be the more mature blog, without a response to such a heinous act of defamation would show weakness, and you know we are anything but that. So what made these guys think the PSP had such an excellent show?

Mercury games Wii-bound

TrippyAn updated release list from Ignition Entertainment has yielded a surprising result: the heretofore Sony-exclusive puzzle series, Mercury, will be gracing Wii consoles with not one but two games come this Turkey Day. Mercury Meltdown and Mercury Type R are currently slated along with the previously announced Metal Slug Anthology to be released this November for the Wii.

Mercury has received some critical acclaim for its inventive puzzle design and play mechanics, so with any luck, the Wii will have two excellent puzzle games before long. (Author's note: actual Mercury is a deadly, poisonous liquid metal that should not be handled under any circumstances without proper supervision and care. Then again, if you're dumb enough to kill yourself with a silver blob, consider yourself eligible for a Darwin Award.)
