Wii Warm Up: Nintendo's next big Wii game

With Wii Fit almost out, our radar will soon be lacking in any kind of activity, as Nintendo has no titles on deck to satisfy our need to play the Wii. We've been thinking what their next big title will be and if, like Reggie said, it'll be available at E3 to play.

So let's start tossing around ideas on this one. What do you think Nintendo's big game reveal will be at the show? Will they be pushing Disaster: Day of Crisis, or will we see something else? What do you hope to see? What do you expect to see?

U.S. WiiWare not on the same monthly release schedule as Japan

When WiiWare launched in Japan on March 25th, the service offered nine new games. Then, no new releases at all (except, of course, for My Life as a King and Lonpos DLC) until almost a month later, when Minna de Puzzloop showed up.

According to a Wired discussion with Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America is going to take more of a Virtual Console-like approach, in which everyone complains that each week's new game isn't Earthbound two or three games come out every week. That means that all the games that were previously announced for launch, like Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, Pop, and Major League Eating will be spread out across the first month or so.

Reggie: Big Wii title coming this holiday, revealed during E3

Reggie had a lot to say to GameTrailers TV host Geoff Keighley, as the interview between the two back during GDC has finally aired. In it, Reggie drops a few bombs on all of us with a soft spot for The Big N, commenting that great content is on the way for Wii during the second half of this year, but we won't be hearing about it until E3.

He does tease us, though, commenting that this "great new content" will maximize "all of our key franchises." But, the biggest bombshell of them all is that there will be one "big game for the holiday that gamers will want." He says it's going to be something appealing to both the hardcore audience and the new expanded audience. Let the speculation begin!

Nintendo rubbishes Brawl delay claims

According to Nintendo, yesterday's news that Brawl had slipped to a fall release in Europe was nothing more than "pure speculation and guesswork."

But hold on, we hear you cry, wasn't Reggie Fils-Aime himself the source of this news? Well, yes, but it looks as though his comment was taken in the wrong way. Instead of saying Europe would be getting Brawl in the fall, Reggie simply stated that the game had been removed from the winter/spring release window. In other words, it was all a simple misinterpretation!

Here's EGM editor Shane Bettenhausen to sooth our fears: "Reggie did tell me (and the other media present) that the release had been pushed out of the winter/spring timeframe due to the amount of localization required to get the game up and running with all the various European languages. But Reggie did not say when Europeans will get Smash Bros., just that it would be at a later date than the US."

Phew! So perhaps now we can all stop shouting and angrily throwing stuff about (we've replaced the two posters we tore down, but our Chocobo plush is a goner).

Reggie on catching Xbox 360, Balance Board support

If serial name-taker and ass-kicker Reggie Fils-Aime has his way, the future is already looking decidedly grim for Nintendo's opposition.

In interviews with Bloomberg and IGN respectively, the Nintendo bigwig has discussed how he hopes to see the Wii overtake the Xbox 360 in North America by June (currently, Nintendo's console is outselling Microsoft's by a reasonably slim margin each month), and has promised that "over ten games are in development that take advantage of the Balance Board."

We already know that Family Ski will be making use of Nintendo's wobbly slab (in conjunction with the Wiimote and nunchuk, which quite brilliantly double as ski poles), but that means there are still nine Balance Board-compatible games out there, waiting to be revealed. If you're listening, 1080° Snowboarding, now is the time for a comeback!

GDC08: Ubisoft treated like an internal Nintendo team

Apparently, developing a "strong, obvious, and accessible" game for the casual crowd will get you treated like an internal team by Nintendo.

GameDaily BIZ reports that Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata, two of the biggest Nintendo bigwigs out there, showered praise on Ubisoft for My Word Coach. When the game was still in development, Fils-Aime told the French company, "You got it. You guys got exactly the type of game we want for this machine." It was Iwata, though, who told Ubisoft that they would be treated as an internal team from now on.

While we're happy for Ubi, we're not sure what to think about Nintendo's enthusiasm. Yes, we get it, they love the casual gamer. But how about us crusty, old, core gamers? Show more developers some appreciation for creating great, non-casual games, please -- or we might just get a complex.

Gamestop officially announces 'raincheck' program

Reggie Fils-Aime may not have promised us Wiis, but he did promise us rainchecks. Now, Gamestop is delivering on the promise by launching the "Wii Certificate Program" (as it's officially called) on December 21st. These rainchecks can only be gotten on the 21st, which means that Reggie was wrong on some of the details. However, since he could probably crush us with his pinky finger, we'll forgive him.

So, here's how it works: When a customer pays $249.99 (plus tax) on the 21st, they will reserve a Wii console for pick-up in the same store by January 25th. Then, Gamestop invests the money to make a pretty penny or two until the system becomes available. See, everybody wins! Except, of course, for the kid on Christmas who opens up a paper-holding DVD case with Mario on the cover saying, "Happy Holidays! Your Wii is on the Way!" Oh, and the people who don't actually manage to get one of these limited reservations. But who cares about all of them?

Wii bundles do not make Reggie a happy bunny

See that look? Yeah, well jerk, that's the exact look Reggie Fils-Aime is giving you right now, should you happen to be one of those retailers forcing consumers to buy bloated Wii bundles.

Chatting to Reuters, Reggie stated that Nintendo was "not [a] big fan" of the practice, and pointed out that bundling the Wii in such a manner "masked" the price advantage enjoyed by the console over its rivals. Not that high prices seem to be putting many people off, but we certainly see his point.

Reggie also said that retailers had been informed of Nintendo's displeasure over the matter, before ominously adding "We don't have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers." You tell 'em, Reginald.

Online voice chat a possibility for the Wii

Reggie sure had a lot to say today, didn't he? He may have crushed our hopes for online features coming to the Virtual Console, but in the process managed to dangle another carrot (a voice chat flavored carrot, that is) in front of our faces. To quote the man himself, "I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system." He also stated that the Wii has the capability for voice chat, it was just a matter of making a peripheral.

That's definitely better than some of the outright "no" statements that we're so used to hearing.

Virtual Console: Online features are for suckers

During the same conference call with Reggie, the notion for online features in Virtual Console games came up. And, like a huge megaton hammer, Reggie came crashing down on the notion with enough force as to completely shatter each and every dream we'd ever had, from ridiculous to surprisingly plausible. It's a shame, because it wouldn't be that hard to give us something so small as online leaderboards.

For those of you looking forward to updates to these past titles, much like the norm on the Xbox Live Arcade, grab a box of Kleenex and sit with us. It's just not going to happen. It's okay, cry. Let it out. We're here with you, doing the same.

Nintendo to offer 'Wii Rainchecks'

In an effort to help dull the impact of the Wii supply crunch, Reggie Fils-Aime has announced in a conference call that Nintendo will make "Wii Rainchecks" available to those who pay in full for a system on December 20th and 21st (but don't actually get a system). The rainchecks will be available at GameStop, and Reggie says they have plentiful supply of certificates, not to mention a large supply of actual Wiis heading out to stores including but not limited to GameStop.

Who wants to bet they'll run out of rainchecks?

Reggie on TV listings channel, development costs and shortages

Speaking at the Dow Jones Consumer Technology Innovations Conference, Reggie Fils-Aime talked about some upcoming Wii-related topics, including things other than how great Wii Fit will be. He discussed Japan's new TV Program Schedule Channel briefly, but only to mention that there are no plans for a U.S. release of such a service. Then, to answer the question proposed in the CNet article's title "Will the Wii be a set-top box?": no. Look to something like the Xbox 360, with which you can already purchase TV shows and movies, for something like that. The TV Program Schedule Channel is a neat convenience designed to get people messing with the Wiimote. Reggie mentioned that future channels "... may look like games. They may not look like games."

Other topics included Wii and DS development costs, which are obviously lower in comparison to other systems', meaning that a game can sell fewer copies and still make a profit. For Nintendo, of course, who is aiming at the biggest mass-market audience they can, this doesn't necessarily mean experimentation, but ridiculous profits. He also went on to talk about shortages, calling them "missed opportunities".

He also talked about how great Wii Fit will be.

Reggie: MS and Sony are hobos, living in cardboard boxes

Well, not exactly, but imagination can be fun!

No, Reggie in fact thinks that his company's competitors have boxed themselves in this generation. Why? Because they chose to invest heavily into cutting-edge technology. The decision to go with photo-realistic, HD graphics is going to be bad for them in the long run, Reggie thinks.

Sony and Microsoft have "gone down the path with building expensive machines that they lose money on. They've gone down the path with games that are hard to develop," he adds. And, if you want to look at sheer profit-per-console, then Reggie is right. And, if you want to look at total consoles sold, then Reggie is right again. Microsoft and Sony have yet to turn a profit on their divisions, while Nintendo has been enjoying the cash money for quite some time now.

But, he makes a valid point: if Microsoft and Sony are already producing crazy, high-end graphics for their games, where will they go from here? Nintendo has innovated how games are played without the need to produce these expensive visuals and been incredibly successful.

Reggie named Grand Marketer of the Year

Brandweek magazine, which we suppose we'll have to get familiar with if we want to continue pretending to know something about business, named Reggie Fils-Aime their "Grand Marketer of the Year" for 2007. The magazine celebrated Reggie with a long article about how awesome the Wii is, and how his strategy and competitiveness helped put the (awesome) Wii in a gazillion homes.

Reggie is given a lot of the credit in this article for Nintendo's unusual Wii marketing, including the "Wii would like to play" commercials and the Wii ambassador program (in which popular bloggers in non-game fields were invited to Wii parties in fancy hotels). Whatever role Reggie has had in the adult-focused marketing of the Wii, it's paying off.
