The hype for any given game generally dies down about a week after release, unless, of course, it's a really big game. The problem is that, unless it's one of those really big games, few people beyond those really excited pick up a game immediately, which means that many games get missed in the whirlwind surrounding the next set of upcoming games.

When do you think we should stop showing off media for a particular game -- right around release, or a few weeks after? When do you usually pick up new releases, on average?

If all the recent rumors are to be believed, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will be releasing awfully close to one another. Of course, that alone is reason to think that at least one of those dates will change (and our money's on Mario Kart), but in the event that they come out within a few weeks of one another, will you just suffer and be broke ... or will you choose? If you must choose, which one wins?

1UP, like some other sites on the Internet, put an article up about Wii Fit's mega-awesome performance in Japan. It includes the requisite Photoshop suggesting that Shigeru Miyamoto is flush with wealth, of course. But their writeup of the news has a little something extra: a release date. If the information casually dropped in the post is accurate, we will be stepping onto and off of things as soon as May 20th.

We're confused and frightened by the lack of any official release information regarding this game. Nintendo hasn't even announced a year for the North American release. Wii Fit is kind of the "next big thing" in expanded-audience Wii gaming, and thus we assume that they plan to, you know, sell it. We find a potential release date soothing. And why would 1UP just pull a date out of nowhere like that? The specificity lends credibility to the claim. Anyway, May seems as good a time as any!

Wii Warm Up: Will you get fit?

We're getting closer to "early 2008," which means it's almost time for Wii Fit. Are you squirreling money away for the fitness program and balance board, or are you waiting? Time has dulled our excitement a little; after all, we've had a few months to get used to the idea, though once it gets closer to release, we may perk up again and start bouncing on our toes (or balancing, in preparation). Are you similarly on the fence, or have you made up your mind one way or another?

I personally think it may be a fun (and quiet) way to help shed that baby weight in the coming months, but since I can't see my feet at the moment, we'll have to see how things go when we get there!

Wii Fit set to make your New Year's resolutions easier

When Nintendo said Wii Fit was set for release in early 2008, it looks like they meant it. Online retailer Amazon has the game-and-board bundle listed for January 1, just in time for all those weight loss resolutions. As rumored, it seems you can pick up the happy fun-time fitness aid for $69.99, which is considerably less than most pieces of multi-use workout equipment.

At press time, Wii Fit is hanging around at #75 in Amazon's video game rankings, just ahead of the $600 80GB PS3 bundled with Motorstorm.

We assume that those of you who believe Wii Fit will singlehandedly kill the gaming industry and deliver its headless corpse to nongamers will be skipping this one, but anyone else interested? This blogger must admit that it seems like a nice supplemental workout tool, especially if extra space is fast becoming a hot commodity (as is the case in our house).

Not long ago, we asked you if you were picking up Metroid Prime 3: Corruption; this was not long after the clarification came down about the lack of online multiplayer, and a lot of feathers were ruffled. But a month has passed, we've seen more from the game, and the hype train has left the station. If you were planning on simply renting or borrowing the latest Metroid -- or even skipping it altogether! -- have you changed your mind? If you were already planning on picking up the game, are you getting it today, or waiting a while?

Manhunt 2 trims down to Mature rating for October release

The New York Times called this one -- a slimmer, sleeker, and we can only guess happier Manhunt 2 will hit shelves, appropriately enough, on Halloween. The ESRB issued a new rating for the game, lowering the Adults Only tag to Mature, which clears the game for release.

The game's fate in Europe, where it was banned in several countries, is as yet unknown, but we expect to hear some news on that front soon.

The entire debacle, though cleared up, is still disheartening. With the number of adult gamers increasing all the time, and comparisons between game and film content demonstrating the vast difference in standards, we hope that someday, something in the system will change. For now, however, it seems publishers and developers, and indeed, all of us, are at the mercy of the ESRB and the standards of Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

EU GameStop list filled with placeholders, excitement

Did we miss an official announcement for Red Steel 2? Apparently GameStop didn't, because they have it down for a fall release in Europe. Of course, it's listed on a placeholder date, but the mere fact that it is there is what piques our interest. GameStop may have a lot of faults, but making up games is not something they're known for.

Are we ready for another Red Steel? Some of us found many redeeming qualities in the flawed title and are excited about a sequel, but we hope for a lot of fixes in the meantime. Ubisoft has apparently been working on the sequel since wrapping up the first title, but we can only hope they've taken enough time this go-round. But enough about that -- let's talk about the rest of the list, which you can find after the break. Wii Fit in February? That sounds about right, though the actual date is probably a placeholder. But the best news for European gamers is that it looks like a lot of these titles aren't suffering from the massive delay that so often plagues releases. That can only be a good thing ... for everything except your wallet, that is.

Super Papier Mario folds effortlessly across Europe on Sept. 14th

After only a five month lag since its U.S. and Japanese releases, Nintendo announced today that Super Paper Mario for the Wii will be released across the continent of Europe on September 14, 2007.

In case you haven't had a chance to pick the game up, it's quite delectable and well worth checking out. One of its strongest points in the American version was its witty, tongue-in-cheek localization courtesy of head translator Nate Bihldorff. Given that Final Fantasy and other relatively text-heavy games often take far longer than this to translate into one language (English), it's rather impressive that NOE can ready this game for release in at least five (UK English, French, German, Spanish and Italian) in as many months. If their work can stand up to the quality of the U.S. localization, Europeans should be in for a tasty treat, indeed.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets release date

Poll: WiiWare's real launch date

Nintendo's "early 2008" prediction for the launch of WiiWare might seem like a lifetime away, but we're still not convinced that the company has given itself enough time to turn the Shopping Channel into a vehicle for new downloadable game content. Nintendo isn't exactly known for its punctuality -- one need only look to the DS's delayed WiFi Connection implementation or the GameCube's nearly-nonexistent online service for examples of stalled promises.

What're your thoughts on the possibilities of WiiWare arriving on schedule? Does early 2008 really sound feasible? Or does it sound like a bunch of duck tales (a-woo-woo!)?

Flight and fight fans will be getting their fix this week as the Wii will see a pair of new releases. The duo may not be what you're looking for in a new game, but at least we're getting more than we did last week. Here's what we're getting:

This week sees the release of only one game, although for puzzle and franchise fans, it's a good one. Sure, Wiimote controls might not revolutionize this franchise, but fan favorites will still find a lot of appeal in this title. Available this week is none other than:

Gamestop visits the future and brings back a list

Feel like planning your game purchases for the rest of the year? We can help, with this list of release dates and prices from EB/Gamestop's point-of-sale system.

There's some reasonably exciting stuff on there, like Manhunt 2 (August 1st), Dewy's Adventure (September 3rd), and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (October 1st), as well as stuff that is slightly less mass-appeal, like Escape from Bug Island and CSI 4: Hard Evidence. There's a large cluster of EA stuff marked as being released on November 1st, but we suspect that date is a placeholder. For that matter, don't take any of these release dates as ironclad.

The full list is available for browsing after the break. It's still useful even if you don't plan to go into Gamestop for some reason.

We've all been waiting for what seems like forever to get our hands on this game and, as it ships from the warehouses to our game stores and homes today, we wonder how we'll kill that last bit of time before we're able to play something that is guaranteed to be worth our time.
