Robotic arm bends to the will of the Wiimote

While we've seen a nunchuk control a robotic camera and the U.S. government's experimental Packbot, we've yet to see anything as sophisticated as this. With the video being past the post break (sorry, but it autoplays and we can't be having that on the main page), we'll save the narrative introduction of describing what this thing is and why it does what it does so well. Just know this: it's pretty awesome.

Cruise past the post break and check out this Wiimote-controlled robotic arm and see for yourself.

Friday Video: Nunchuk camera hack

This one is fairly old, but pretty darn good. Well, good if you like robots. And nunchuks. Odds are if you're reading this site, you do. Success!

Anyway, the video may be lacking in the "how to do this" area, but it is certainly not lacking that cool factor. We can imagine a million different uses for a robotic camera such as this. Let us list a few:
  • Finding loose snack chips that fell behind the sofa
  • Powerpoint presentations (just attach a pointer to the camera's head)
  • Spying on your ex-girlfriend or boyfriend
  • Creating your very own Roboquad

New weapon against bomb threats: waggle

The U.S. government is apparently experimenting with using the Wii remote to control a bomb-defusing robot. They've adapted Packbot, made by the company that built my vacuum cleaner, to accept commands from a Wiimote -- we assume that includes motion input as well, otherwise there'd be no point in using the Wiimote.

The idea behind the experiment is that the Wii's "more instinctive" controls allow for better maneuvering of Packbot and thus more effective (and less dangerous) bomb disposal. As long as nobody on the Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz team is involved with programming the controls.

We're a little bummed that we'll never get a chance to play with the exclusive "Bomb-Defusing Robot" peripheral, although we know the accessories would get expensive, and also we'd probably die.

Nunchuk robot coming for your soul

So maybe Charlie isn't really coming for your soul, but he is awfully cute, and since he needs only a Wii nunchuk, a transmitter, and a little attention, he's pretty awesome, too. Creator frank26080115 designed the RC robot to work in a variety of ways with the nunchuk for control; he can use the joystick to move the little guy around, or with the Z-button depressed, the scheme allows for full motion controls. Using the C button, he can control Charlie's head. Better still? There's code and more available for all you robot aficionados at home, so you can get to work on your own version.

THQ handling game duties for upcoming Pixar film

With THQ handling duties on previous Pixar films' game adaptation Ratatouille, it comes as little surprise that they're taking care of business regarding the upcoming game based on the soon-to-release film WALL•E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class). The story follows a small robot (WALL•E, natch) on a journey of self-discovery.

The movie is currently scheduled for a release this summer.

E307: Mainstream press loves WiiFit, constructs Wii robot as tribute

Though the gaming press's reactions to Nintendo's E3 media briefing have been, for the most part, lukewarm, mainstream publications are very positive about WiiFit's debut. Here are a few headlines that enunciate the differences in perception between the gaming hardcore and the general public:
The Mercury News went so far as to fashion together an automaton (see image above) out of coils and Wii scraps in order to illustrate Nintendo's domination. We'd be too scared to even compete with the company, knowing that this ED-209-esque villain could break into our houses and stamp us out at any moment. Jump past the post break for a better view of its hulking figure.

Giant stompy Gundam scans

These may not be the newest Mobile Suit Gundam MS Front 0079 scans, but they are big and beautiful ... much like the mecha themselves. In fact, it seems to be the full set from last week, but now that we can get the full picture, along with the gameplay footage we've seen, we're starting to get a little excited. We feel a powerful need to slice and dice, and not in the Cooking Mama-sort of way.

Rock 'em sword 'em robots

It's a Gundam!! Namco Bandai has launched the official site for its recently-announced Mobile Suit Gundam MS Front 0079 title. Set to hit Japanese stores this July 28th, the 20-plus-year-old franchise shows no signs of slowing down with its second game for the Wii console in just a few months.

We spotted footage of the FPS in action at the teaser page, and have embedded them for your mecha-loving enjoyment after the post break. The barren setting looks unimpressive, but the videos give you a good idea of how the Wii remote will be used for melee combat and aiming with ranged weapons. Judging by what we've seen so far, Mobile Suit Gundam MS Front 0079 might be our first chance to finally wield something resembling a lightsaber on the Wii!

Student creates robot controlled by Wiimote

We can picture it now. A bleak, cloudless sky that shelters the approaching robotic horde, set to lay waste to our last living city. All controlled by one madman, who's only wish is to eradicate humankind holds in him a fiery rage and his hand one sleek Wiimote. Raising it high to the heavens, his scream is strong enough to further crush the rubble at his feet as he syncs the Wiimote to his army. As he is ready to go, he is forced to wait the 2-3 seconds it takes for the Wiimote to sync up with the robots.

Well, maybe the Wiimote fantasies we concoct on our break asleep at the keyboard aren't exactly the best, but we still fear ambitious projects such as that of these college folk who, for their Electromechanical design class at the University of Michigan's Mechanical Engineering department, designed the Wiimote-controlled robotic arm. We've presented the video of this integration between the two in motion embedded into the post past the break.

Lego robot designed to bowl perfect game, actually does

Maybe we're the only ones who fear a robot uprising and the enslavement of all humanity at the cold, metallic hands of cruel, unfeeling robotic overlords? No? Well, then why are people dying to build robots that perform human tasks? Bueller?

And, in case you didn't follow all of that, the embedded video past the post break presents a robot designed to bowl a perfect game in Wii Sports: Bowling. Whether the credit belongs to the robot or individual who made the robot is anyone's guess. We're going to go with the individual, however, since we hate robots.

Please do keep the human resistance informed of any new developments in the robotic community, won't you?

The WiiBot will totally cut you

Get ready to welcome our new WiiBot overlords, because robot plus sword always calculates out as world domination. Also, this latest creative use of the Wiimote kinda makes all the other hacks look a little, well, lame.

"Check this out! I can play World of Warcraft with my Wiimote!"
"Oh yeah? Well, I can cut you with my Wiimote-controlled machine of death."

WiiBot is just a pocket full of win, and it comes complete with hilarious video footage. We're truly living in a golden age.

Mario and Luigi take vacation in Vice City

The guys in charge of Robot Chicken, adult swim's stop animation show featuring action figures that takes stabs at pop culture and the gaming world, have shown that when they set out to make something funny, they often succeed with ease. In last night's new episode, their next targets were the Mario bros. and they showed us a much darker side of the brothers than we are used to seeing. Check the video out, which has been embedded into the post after the break.
