VC Tuesday: Hot Fighting History

After a week off, Japan's Virtual Console is slow to pick back up. Really slow. Only two games made it to the download service this time, both martial-arts related, and both not very good.

Konami's Yie Ar Kung-Fu at least deserves a bit of respect for being one of the first fighting games. Of course, that means it suffers the fate of all pre-SF2 fighters and isn't much fun. But at least it's better than Urban Champion. Yie Ar Kung-Fu is also notable for its deceptively banal title. Yie and Ar are Mandarin for one and two, which means that the game's title is actually the adorable One-Two Kung-Fu.

The other game is Samurai Ghost. It's not really any better in Japanese.

VC Friday: The Art of Sonic

It's another Friday, and lately, that means Neo Geo games! Plus, y'know, some other stuff, which is usually pretty pricey, as VC titles goes. But this week, European gamers get a little break with a release out there for only 600 points. On top of that, there's four games from which Wii owners may choose. Sometimes, it's good to be a Nintendo fan.
  • Alien Soldier -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points
  • Art of Fighting -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii points
  • Samurai Ghost -- Turbografx -- 600 Wii points
  • Sonic 3D -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points

VC Tuesday: Knuckular Power

It's a common complaint, but Japan gets so much cooler boxart for games (except for Sonic 3.) This boxart for what we know as Streets of Rage 3 is beautifully painted and would make a great poster for an action movie. Our boxart would make a great nothing for nothing. And the name: Streets of Rage is generic as can be, but Bare Knuckle totally implies tough people fighting with their fists-- which is exactly what is happening in this game.

The other stuff out this week in Japan is Esper Dream, a Famicom Disk System action-RPG that uses the same color scheme for its characters as The Goonies II, and Genpei Toumaden, an awkward-looking Turbografx-16 action game that we'll be getting soon as Samurai Ghost.
