Top 5: Multiplayer Experiences

As someone who writes on the Internets, I do a lot of reading as well. As just about any successful author will advise, if I want to be a better writer then I should be reading as much as possible. Thus, I tend to spend a good amount of time scouring the gaming websites and reading commentary from just about anyone. I wouldn't insult anyone by pointing out flaws in their work (as I'm host to many of my own), but it is sufficient to say that there is great diversity in the quality and other general attributes of gaming commentary. One source that I do consistently enjoy comes from GoNintendo's head honcho, known as RawmeatCowboy. Equal parts Nintendo fan and beard enthusiast, RMC has a passion for gaming unmatched by nearly anyone else in the entire industry. Whereas some journalists and commentators may give off an impression of jaded cynicism, this particular blogger is a bundle of video game-loving joy. Though he's not quite the wordsmith of a Jerry Holkins, his joy and optimism transcend any potential criticism. And after all, that should be the reason we play video games: for happiness.

Stepping away from worshipping his shrine, I'll get back on target. In a recent post, RMC discusses offline multiplayer via a get-together involving several friends of his trying out Guitar Hero: World Tour. He states that multiplayer is more enjoyable in person than online, and I find it difficult to disagree. That is not to say that online multiplayer is garbage; quite the opposite is true. Aside from the obvious pragmatics of not always being able to round up a few friends to play a game you enjoy, there's the global aspect behind online gaming. Though I've been battling people online via chess years before any major console had such capabilities, the enormous power of the technology didn't register with me until very recently. As I was connecting to an online race in Mario Kart Wii, the identification of racers on the globe really hit home. Realizing that I was simultaneously connecting with individuals from Japan, China, Germany, and England was strangely beautiful.

Despite the fascinating global implications of such connections, I remain a bit of a luddite in that I don't think there's anything better than having your friends in the same room with you while fighting with or against each other. Here's the Top 5 ways we recommend that you enjoy such opportunities.

Revolutionary: Capturing the Moment

Every (other) week, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

Segueing from last edition's topic: you've just built a sick Smash Bros. Brawl level, and you're ready to share it with the world. You upload it to your website and throw up some pics from the game's handy built-in photo mode. Everybody can see your creation without needing to first go through the trouble of downloading the level, putting it on an SD card, and loading it up on their Wii. Of course, your level looks like so much fun, they won't be able to resist trying it for themselves. But what if, like so many other games, there was no photo mode? How would you display your masterpiece? Or maybe seeing a still pic isn't enough to really sell the dynamics and spirit of your build. Then what? Read on as we delve into the art of video capture and photo composition -- for games!

Dojo update: Get your taunt on

Taunts may be more or less redundant, but they still littered our Melee sessions, and we expect the same will be true of Brawl. Today's dojo update gave us a first look at how we'll be able to goad our opponents in the game, so we see Link giving his sword a nonchalant twirl, Mario spinning his hat "whimsically," Snake hiding in his box, and Sonic giving us a quick shuffle of his feet.

Each character has three different taunts, all of which can be executed by pressing certain directions on either the d-pad, or the Wii Remote's 1 and 2 Button.

Dojo update: Little Mac

Oh man, why couldn't he have been a playable character?

We guess we can't be too upset, considering he still made his way into the game. This is something we've been dying for since the first game on the N64.

Little Mac has two different attacks, his swift jabs and his special move, the uppercut. In fact, now our thoughts are drifting toward a resurrection for the franchise on the Wii.

When fanboyism goes too far: Smash Bros Brawl in real life

Hey, we're fanboys. But, sometimes you have to know when to ... well, curb your enthusiasm. If you think it'd be a good idea to go down to your local park, dress up like characters in the game and act out the brawling, you might want to stop and think for a moment. You wouldn't want your video posted on some blog where people might make fun of you.

Smash Bros. delay could spell doom this holiday for Wii

In speaking to Chris Kohler over at Wired, Michael Pachter stated that the delay of Smash Bros. Brawl could be a very bad thing for Nintendo and their Wii this holiday season. He thinks that Microsoft might be a contender now, stating "instead of Nintendo being the clear winner this holiday, maybe Microsoft has a chance of keeping up. There's not as much compelling Nintendo content this holiday without it." Instead of it being the killer app for Nintendo, Pachter thinks their big title will now be one from Activision. A little known title called Guitar Hero III.

Even though it's releasing next month, we'd like to think that a title called Super Mario Galaxy is going to be the big hit this holiday

Dojo update: Sonic has got some moves

Following the revelation of Sonic appearing in the game and the trailer of him working his magic, today we get a breakdown on his arsenal of special moves. And, from the looks of it, he is either going to be our new favorite character, or most despised enemy. His special moves look like they may be cheaper than that of Fox's, if he's zipping around all quick like in a little ball, just running everyone over. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, be sure to hit up our gallery below for some images of Sonic performing his special moves.

Dojo update: Sonic the Hedgehog (of course)

After dropping the bomb on us very late last night (or really early this morning, depending on how you want to look at it), it's only natural that the dojo would update us with a new trailer and bio for newcomer Sonic the Hedgehog. And, based on the trailer above, Sonic's Final Smash involves him transforming into his super self. Be sure to also hit up the gallery below, where some screens of Sonic in-game await your eager eyes. And be sure to head past the break for another new trailer for the game.

Dojo update: Zero Suit Samus special moves

It's another week and that means another 5 days full of updates over at the dojo. Today showcases the variety of maneuvers Samus can perform while in her Zero Suit, which you may or may not know occurs when she lays the smack down hard. Personally, we can't wait to give her a try in both forms, so that we may see which is better for us. Considering she was our favorite character in Melee, we're sure we'll like playing as her again.

Dojo update: Enter Lucas

Yay, another new character for Smash Bros. Brawl! Unfortunately, we've never heard of him. Oh, that's probably because the game he is from (Mother 3, in case you were wondering) never released outside of Japan. Still, a new character is nice, regardless of what game he is from, so we can't complain.

Dojo update: Andross and special moves breakdown

Today is a double update over at the dojo, revealing the assist trophy of Andross (the boss from StarFox) and Meta Knight's special moves. Andross' inclusion in the game (which is quite awesome, we might add) has him taking up the role of assist trophy, as once he is summoned, he quickly retreats to the background and gets ready to spit out a stream of ploygons set to damage your opponents.

Dojo update: Superspicy curry

Today's update over at the dojo reveals a new item in the superspicy curry. Once it is eaten, the character who ingested it gains the ability to shoot fireballs from their mouth. Not to be confused with the fireflower, these are small bursts of fire that can also be used mid-combo to add some damage.

All in all, looks like a great addition to the already long list of deadly items.

Dojo update: Petey Piranha

And the final update over at the dojo for the week reveals one of the Subspace Army's (which is part of that whole Subspace Emissary thing) bosses, Petey Piranha. As you can see, he holds both Peach and Zelda hostage in their own cage and depending on which one you damage more, that's the hostage you save. But, what about the unsaved princess?

Dojo update: Yoshi's Final Smash

Today's update over at the dojo provides us with a look at Yoshi's Final Smash maneuver: Super Dragon. Here, Yoshi grows the giant wings you see above and can fly about the battlefield, spitting out a jet of fire. He can also, as you, again, see above, spit out fireballs. It only lasts for short time, however, as Yoshi then loses his wings and reverts back to his normal form.

Dojo update: Hey, it's Peach!

And our last dojo update for the week reveals none other than the princess of Mushroom Kingdom. Peach will return with many of her same moves in tact, allowing her to still utilize her Toad Defense maneuver and parasol during battle. She does look a lot better, though, as there is a lot more detail to her character design in Brawl.
