The VC Advantage: The men who would be Kings

When The King of Fighters '94 introduced the concept of the three-person team to side-scrolling fighting games, it simultaneously introduced the idea of the joke team. While the other teams consisted of martial arts champions, mercenaries, and wielders of ancient powers, the American Sports Team was a group of three American professional athletes:

Wii releases this week: SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 edition

Remember how we told you to stay away from all of those NEO-GEO games that released on the Virtual Console these past weeks? Well, this is why: SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1. Within this disc, you'll find plenty of old-school SNK titles, which, when compared with their Virtual Console counterparts, fetch a much cheaper price of admission.

This week's retail releases include:
  • Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
  • SNK Arcade Classics Vol.1
  • Order Up
  • Chess Crusade
So, who's picking up what?

VC Friday: Neo Geo duo

This week's muscle-bound PAL Virtual Console update comes exclusively from SNK's sleek, black beast of a console.

Art of Fighting 2 makes its worldwide Virtual Console debut, though if you own a PlayStation 2, Art of Fighting Anthology is available cheaply, and should be coming to the Wii ... at some point. Also worth noting: it has some of the most brilliantly awful voice-acting ever (go past the break to see some footage). Sidescrolling duff-'em-up Ninja Combat completes this week's offerings.
  • Art of Fighting 2 -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points
  • Ninja Combat -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points

Virtually Free: King of the Contests

Earlier this week, we profiled the latest Virtual Console release -- King of the Monsters (Neo Geo, 900 Wii points/9$) and declared it good, but not enough to spend money on. That makes it just perfect for this week's edition of Virtually Free, since the whole idea here is you don't have to spend money. All you have to do is leave a comment and you've got a chance to win!

To enter, just leave a comment here (with a valid e-mail address!) and tell us about any other currently-available Neo Geo games you'd like to see us give away. You must be a legal resident of the United States with an American Wii (sorry, Canadians, we have to leave you out of this one; blame the gifting system and not us!) and 18 years of age or older. You may enter once per calendar day between now and Monday, July 14; the contest comes to a close that night at 11:59 PM Eastern time, and we'll select a winner in a random drawing the next day. Questions? Check out the official rules.

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 7/7/08

This week sees the Virtual Console receiving only one game, but, thankfully, it's a good game. Never played King of the Monsters before? Well, hit up the video above for some gameplay footage, then head past the break for more.

VC Monday Madness: SPOGS and King of the Monsters

There's two items for download on the Wii this week, as we receive one WiiWare and one Virtual Console title in North America. This week's Virtual Console download is an old favorite, so without further delay, let's get to the goods.

This week's WiiWare release is:
  • SPOGS Racing (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
This week's Virtual Console release is:
  • King of the Monsters (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

With only one title available for download this week, we were quick to dive in and check it out. You can see some gameplay clips above and head past the break for the text and image show that we usually tuck past there.

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 6/23/08

This week sees the Virtual Console receiving not one, but two games. Well, we've had enough time to play them and have produced the video you see above. Check it out then head on past the break for the rest.

The VC Advantage: Samurai Letdown

Consider this a sort of anti-VC Advantage, because it covers cheats that don't exist. If you're reading The VC Advantage and you own (or plan to own) the new VC release of Samurai Shodown, it's probably occurred to you to head over to GameFAQs and look for additional content that can be unlocked. If you've done so, you'd be pleased to find codes to unlock three additional characters.

You'd then be disappointed after trying them, because they're in error. The Shiki and Zankuro unlock codes originate from Samurai Spirits! on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, and the code to unlock the Kuroko judge character is from the Neo Geo Samurai Shodown II. It's easy to understand how the NGPC codes got mixed in: search engines and other automated systems wouldn't be able to tell between Samurai Spirits! and Samurai Spirits (the Japanese title for Shodown), making mixups easy.

You're free to use those saved five minutes however you please!

The VC Advantage is a weekly look at the secrets inside games -- not just cheat codes, but assorted trivia and oddities. We aim to bring back the feeling of the hint columns from game magazines, except when we do something else.

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 6/16/08

Only one Virtual Console release this week, but it's a good one. We won't waste any more time talking about the game, so hit up the video above. If that's not to your liking, head past the break for more.

VC Monday Madness: We could get used to this ...

Another week means another double dose of downloadable goodness. We get two WiiWare games this week, along with one Virtual Console game that is likely to put a smile on your face. So, let's check out what's on offer:

Anyone like what they see? Planning on giving any of these a download?

Plattchen, King of the Monsters rated by ESRB

Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint was the first WiiWare game announced, back in July of last year. According to the ESRB, it's (at least eligible to be) twisting 'n' painting its way to the Wii Shop any time now, having been officially rated. Also rated: King of the Monsters, SNK's totally great Neo Geo monster fighting game, which was released on Japan's Virtual Console two weeks ago.

It's impossible to predict when these games will actually show up on the VC and WiiWare, but we're hoping that King of the Monsters will appear soon. It's been too long since we controlled a rock monster throwing tanks at a giant guy. Too long.

VC Friday: Back on form

If you think we've already forgiven Nintendo for totally neglecting the PAL Virtual Console last week, you can think again, sunshine. Nope, Ninty is officially in our bad books, and no amount of sweet talk, flowers, weekends away, or singing telegrams can let the company out of the doghouse right now. Frankly, we've never felt so unwan -- eh, what's that you say? Five games? Two of which prominently feature ninjas? Oh, go on then.
  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World -- Master System -- 500 Wii Points
  • Fatal Fury 2 -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points
  • Ninja Combat -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points
  • Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points *
  • Nebulus -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points *
* Unavailable in Oz, we're afraid, but look at the bright side: footage of all five games is past the break! Actually, we're not sure how that's meant to console you, or how those two facts are even related. Ridiculous, really.

Neo Geo VC games to be redundant in Europe as well

Happy times are ahead for European gamers who bristle at the thought of spending 900 Wii Points each on Neo Geo games. Ignition Entertainment has just announced plans to release the SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 disc in Europe. The PSP and PS2 versions are expected in August, with the Wii release some time later.

If the mockup boxart seen here turns out to be what is really used, Europe is getting a way better package than we are in the U.S. Of course, it'll probably be more expensive, but still cheaper than buying the available games on the VC (all 11 of which are on this disc). There's still the matter of emulation quality -- hopefully this collection will get the ports right.

Slew of SNK titles, along with Dig Dug, get rated by ESRB

Fans of SNK and the Virtual Console, you'll be happy you're reading this post today. A couple of titles, Fatal Fury 2 and Art of Fighting 2 both popped up on the ESRB website with Wii listings, as well as Samurai Shodown and Samurai Shodown 2. Not only that, but classic title Dig Dug also popped up.

Now that's what we need! Some new, non-shooter titles on the Virtual Console are a welcome addition to the Wii's catalog.
