Jawa gets less mysterious through boxart, new screens

Fresh screens and the Japanese boxart have dropped for Spike's Jawa: The Mammoth and the Mysterious Stone, depicting the young caveman protagonist (you can also play with your own Mii) going about his usual business. The boxart, which is pictured to the right, actually kind of clicks with us. We know, line-ups are totally boring, but there's something about this line-up that just resonates with us. Maybe it's the huge, tusked Mammoth that's chilling behind the clan, soaking up the sun. Or, maybe it's just all of those darn dinosaurs going about their business in the backgrounds. That's probably it. Dinosaurs are pretty awesome, you know.

Head on past the break for a look a pair of new screens from the game.

Jawa: The Trailer and the Mysterious Battle System

If you're among the elite crowd who has spent precious seconds thinking about Spike's Jawa: The Mammoth and the Mysterious Stone, you've probably wondered two things: first, why the heck it's called Jawa, and second, what they're trying to push on us, here. This R2 unit has a bad motivator! how those rhythm-based battles work.

From the trailer, it appears to be a call-and-response type of system: the game shows a motion or button press right before you're to attack, and then a successfully on-beat press of the correct button connects. It's somewhere between Simon and a Quick Timer Event, or something.

Between the rhythm-battle system, the communication elements between players, the dinosaur-raising, and the animal-riding, there seems to be a lot going on in Jawa -- much more than the simplistic style suggests.

Jawa: kinda like Caveman Crossing

Some gameplay details have come to light about Spike's Jawa: The Mammoth and the Mysterious Stone, which do a lot to continue the Tail of the Sun comparison. Of course, the simplistic (but different) graphical style and the caveman theme go a long way in that direction, as well. But the game veers from Tail of the Sun in a few ways.

Like Tail of the Sun, the game centers around the survival of a small tribe of cavemen. Hunting and gathering food is important, and as you get stronger, you can expand your search area without succumbing to fatigue. However, Jawa takes more of an action-adventure game approach, putting you in control of one character and allowing you to ride animals to traverse the area. Battles use a rhythm-based Wiimote-shaking method.

This game has more of an emphasis on communication and (asynchronous) multiplayer, as well. Up to four players can occupy the same settlement and send each other messages. It's just like Animal Crossing, except you hunt and eat all the animals!

Escape from Bug Island evades price gouging

There's got to be someone out there waiting to get their hands on Eidos' Escape from Bug Island-- someone very weird who either doesn't care about the quality of their games or, perhaps, collects awful games. That's cool with us; we can support weirdness.

After having to put up with a delay, Bug Island die-hards are getting a small reward in the form of a pre-release price drop. Escape from Bug Island will be priced at $30 when (and if) it finally comes out on the 24th. Europe has to wait until September 14th, but at least the game will be the same price.

More Dragon Ball Z on the Wii; TV show continues to be old

Even though the series started in Japan back in 1989, and ended in 1996, the tie-in games just keep on coming for Dragon Ball Z. Atari has announced Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for the Wii and PS2. Like the previous installment on Wii, this is part of the Dragon Ball Z Sparking series in Japan and is developed by Spike.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will include improved Wii controls and over 150 playable characters, which is a lot of big-haired dudes and blonde versions of those same big-haired dudes. The stages will include day/night versions, which opens up a transformation ability for many characters. There's a teaser animation on the Japanese website, but no screens or anything yet.

What did you all think of the last DBZ game on Wii? Are you enthused about another one? Has the series been run into the ground?

New trailer pops up at Necro-Nesia site

When we reported awhile back about Spike's Necro-Nesia, we were excited about the launch of the site and the premise the game presented. Seeing it in motion, we're a little more excited for the game now. With the survival-horror themes and different scenarios using the Wiimote in interesting ways, Necro-Nesia could very well be one of the Wii's must-have titles. Obviously, we'll have to see a whole lot more before making that decision, though.

In order to access the trailer, you'll need to move the cursor over the cabin, click it, then once inside the Gallery section, you'll want to click on the top right box to access the videos section.

A pair of scans for Spike's Necro-Nesia, teaser site launch

To be honest, we're survival-horror junkies. We loves the tension brought on from games of that variety, so upon catching these two scans with our wide-reaching, ever-electronic internets, we raised our left eyebrow in a totally intrigued way lacking any kind of obnoxious commentary and began to ever-so-softly stroke our chin with interest. We might have even had a corn cob pipe in our mouth.

Also, upon further digging through the mess that our internet caught, we discovered that Necro-Nesia also recently opened a teaser site. There isn't much there unless you're able to translate ancient Japanese text, but does keep our interest alive with the promise of a real site launch on the 2nd of October.

Anyone care to translate the story and introduction pages for us? We swear we'll love you forever!
