Expect more WiiWare this Monday

Konami and Hudson both spilled the beans on two major WiiWare titles, Critter Round-Up and Star Soldier R, informing us that they will be available for download on Monday. As you all know, we're dying to get our hands on Hudson's shmup and were disappointed to not see it at the WiiWare launch.

So, what about the Virtual Console? It's possible that VC fans could get the shaft again this Monday, however in Japan Nintendo has been known to release Virtual Console games alongside WiiWare games on the same day. We'll just have to wait and see, we suppose.

Nintendo reveals first WiiWare titles for Europe

Nintendo has released a list of eight games described as "launch window" titles ahead of WiiWare's debut in Europe on May 20th. Included are four games that the U.S. is still waiting on -- Dr. Mario & Germ Buster, Star Soldier R, Toki Tori, and Pirates: The Key of Dreams -- though it looks like Europe will be waiting a little longer for Defend Your Castle and V.I.P Casino: Blackjack. Frankly, we'll live without a blackjack game.

Once again, note that these are "launch window" games. How long is a launch window? No idea. "Launch window" is one of those infuriatingly flexible terms beloved by PR types. Anyway, the list of WiiWare games that Europe will be getting kinda near the launch is as follows:

There's currently no news on pricing, but we'd fully expect European WiiWare prices to match those of other regions, assuming Nintendo hasn't found a totally new and unique way to rip European gamers off.

Hudson must have been reading our diary, because Star Soldier R is coming to the WiiWare service in the United States. The news arrives via a press release that has just made its way into the inbox of our overlords at Joystiq and we couldn't be happier. We love to shoot stuff (in video games) and we can't wait to shoot stuff in Star Soldier R!

Star Soldier R will be releasing alongside the launch of the WiiWare service next month.

If you're anything like us, then the upcoming release of WiiWare is going to mean a smaller bank account total and less time on your hands. After all, there are several quality titles that will be available through the service, one of which is Hudson's Star Soldier R.

We don't know if it's the shmup fan in us or the interesting take on level structure (time-based challenges compared to the usual progression of advancing through a set stage), but we're completely smitten with the game. Thankfully, IGN uploaded some new videos to watch, which should help us deal with the waiting.

Star Soldier R video longer than the game itself

The news that Star Soldier R would abandon a traditional progressive level structure in favor of time attack-style gameplay (available in two- and five-minute pockets) wasn't warmly greeted by everyone. Game|Life's Chris Kohler criticized the title for representing poor value, while some of you sounded pretty miffed.

In his latest WiiWare video tour, WiiFolder's Josh Thomas attempts to win some of the naysayers over, playing through the game's five-minute mode, and also the (Takahashi Meijin-inspired?) Fast Shot mode. It sure looks hawt, and there's plenty going on to keep your eyes glued to the screen, but is this amount of content worth eight bucks?

WiiWare launched, impressions rounded up

While most of us were sleeping -- like a bunch of chumps -- Nintendo launched its WiiWare service in Japan early this morning. As expected, the WiiWare servers are taking a beating from thousands of gamers hoping to try out the new downloadable releases, but Siliconera's Spencer Yip and Wired's Chris Kohler were still able to grab a few games and write up their impressions, all of which you can peruse below.

A few surprises revealed themselves with the service's launch:

My Life as a King is rife with microtransactions, offering additional costumes, dungeons, and races (Yukes, Selkies, and Lilties) for 100-300 Wii Points.
Star Soldier R features three light modes -- a two-minute mode in which you play through a quick stage for a high score, a similar 5-minute mode with two levels and boss encounters, and a "Fast Shot" mode for testing your button-tapping skills.
Saku Saku Animal Panic, the only WiiWare launch title from a US developer and a game we haven't paid any attention to at all, is apparently "pretty fun!" Judging by Chris Kohler's impressions, it sounds a lot like Jezzball, minus the balls ... And the Jezz.

Now all we need are detailed Dr. Mario, Okiraku Ping Pong,and My Life as a King impressions!

Takahashi Meijin to show off Wii Ware in Japan

Hudson's Takahashi Meijin, the star of Adventure Island, will be a featured guest at a Wii Ware event hosted by Japanese cell phone company KDDI. The KDDI Design Studio will take place on April 1st and 2nd in Harajuku, and will feature playable versions of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As a King, Dr. Mario & Bacillus Extermination, and Hudson's Star Soldier R. Admission will be free. Plane tickets to Japan continue not to be.

Takahashi will participate in a "talk show" as well as game demonstrations. He rose to fame with his Star Soldier shooting skills, so attendees should expect some feats of button-mashing from the Meijin on the new version.

If there's one genre we'll never tire of, it's the shoot-em-up. Or, shmup for those of you who prefer your labels to contain less syllables. It's a very accessible genre of games and one chock full of the kind of action that never bores us: shooting everything in sight.

And that's why we're psyched for Hudson's upcoming Wii Ware title, Star Soldier R. It promises lots of shooting, without the steep entrance fee of going out to buy it in the real world. Sure, we could purchase online, but you need a credit card for that. Nobody trusts us that much.

Regardless of our credit woes, be sure to head past the break for more shoot-em-up goodness from Star Soldier R. It looks like it promises lots of shooting everything on the screen.

Slew of new titles announced for Wii Ware

Though its potential can't be denied, Nintendo's Wii Ware channel, an upcoming download service for new Wii games, didn't impress us much with the seemingly low-budget titles announced for it so far. Nintendo amended that worriment today at its Tokyo conference by revealing a lineup of impressive projects in progress, turning our "Excitement Level" knob to eleven, one measure greater than what we previously thought the mechanism allowed.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King and the Promised Land (1500 Wii Points, March), a "country-building sim," stands out from the bunch, promising an exclusive side story which takes place after the original GameCube game. This marks the fourth entry to the series and the second Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles title announced for the Wii. Square Enix has already made a teaser site for you to load up and immediately close once you've realized that there's almost nothing there yet.

Hudson, having kept things on and poppin' on the Virtual Console side for some time now, demonstrated its commitment to the new service by announcing new games like Bomberman, Star Soldier R, and Joysound, the last of which will be a karaoke title. Namco Bandai also chimed in with Mojipittan, a Japanese word puzzle game.

As for Nintendo's contributions to the Wii Ware channel, the company announced Dr. Mario (!!!), Pokemon Farm, Puzzloop for Everyone, and Maruboushikaku, all of which appearing to have some form of Mii integration. You can preview screenshots for those titles at the Famitsu links below.
