Wii Warm Up: Unleashing the fun

With the latest on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, it sounds like the fine folks at Lucasarts have managed to do something no other developer has done: create a Wii port of a multiplatform title that actually sounds like it could be better than the other versions available. Come on, ripping off turrets and using them to fire at people with your mind while you cut down countless enemies with your lightsaber? That sounds awesome.

What do you all think? Does Star Wars: The Force Unleashed sound like fun to you? Do you think the game will be as endearing as some of the better Star Wars games of the past?

Joystiq tests Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Just like you, we're dying to get our hands on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It looks like a good Star Wars action title, one that might even stay with us long after we've completed, just as Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II did. Thankfully, our cruel overlords at Joystiq got to enjoy some time with the game, taking care to write down their thoughts for us all. Their verdict? You're probably going to want to pick this up.

Virtually Overlooked: Star Wars (Famicom)

Star Wars games aren't always great. In fact, sometimes they're Masters of Teras Kasi. Sometimes they're Super Bombad Racing. They suffer from the same fate as any other licensed game: the developers put the universe before the gameplay, and insert whichever popular genre of game they feel like into a Star Wars framework, knowing that enough units will sell regardless of quality.

Namco's Famicom Star Wars game is the worst, and the best. It deviates from the source material not just to fit the genre (Super Bombad Racing required the existence of karts, for example, though in this case the game just shouldn't have been made), but seemingly at random. Somebody on the team may have heard of Star Wars, maybe. Even Soul Calibur IV, which actually isn't a Star Wars game at all, makes more sense as a Star Wars game than this.

Unleashing the Force is getting easier

IGN took in a preview session of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and found that it hasn't been abandoned in favor of Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels, the new hotness in yet-to-be-released lightsaber games. In fact, work is still being put into the controls, to the game's benefit. The control scheme uses motion controls effectively, delivering the experience of slashing in a direction and seeing the big shiny sword on screen do the same thing.

"It was easy to throw characters into one another, lift a baddy up into the air and then saber throw," said Mark Bozon. "The lock-on camera worked great for bosses, and even the 'tilt to the side' block with the Wiimote worked every time we wanted it to." Pointer integration has been added as well, allowing players to point and click around the environments.

They were able to test the controls in several single-player levels (including a Jedi temple) as well as the Wii-exclusive one-on-one fighting mode. That mode is also the subject of a spate of new videos, one of which can be seen above. Knock him out the box, Luke, knock him out!

First glimpse at Star Wars Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels

While most debut trailers are full of pre-rendered cutscenes and CG, we're glad to report that the first glimpse at Star Wars Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels actually has quite a bit of gameplay in it. And, based on what we saw, it looks like the action is going to be spot-on. The timing looks good and the speed of combat seems intense enough to warrant our attention. We're still not crazy about the game's look, though.

What do you all think? Looking forward to taking out the Sith trash? Going to crush the Jedi order?

Wii Lightsaber Games Episode II: The Clone Wars [update]

IGN's interview with LucasArts producer Ken Fox offers the first gameplay information (and screenshot) of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The one-on-one lightsaber fighting game, developed by Krome Studios, makes heavy use of Wii Remote motion controls to simulate swordfighting. You know, just like that other Star Wars Wii game coming out. Strangely, Fox's discussion of this new game seems to omit The Force Unleashed -- which is also a Star Wars game developed by Krome which features a duel mode. "The promise of a Wii lightsaber game has hung in the air since the Wii hit the shelves," Fox said. "We think this is the game that delivers on that promise."

Sort of implies that the other one isn't going to deliver, doesn't it? Is LucasArts trying to shift focus away from The Force Unleashed? Should we be worried about its quality? We only say this because since its reveal, The Force Unleashed has been positioned as The Wii Lightsaber Game.

[Update: another screen now available after the break.]]

Lucasarts talks story in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Lucasarts is pretty serious about wanting you to like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Considering all we know about the title so far, it seems to combine just enough of the new with the old to get fans pumped.

The latest attempt at getting you excited for the game is in the video above. It provides more information on the game's story and shows some plot spoilers. If you're looking to go into the game pure, then you may not want to watch.

Ugly new Star Wars game on the way

The back cover of the Lego Indiana Jones manual has revealed a new Star Wars game headed to Wii and DS: Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This new game will be based on the CG movie and animated series coming out later this year. It's actually the second Clone Wars game: a Clone Wars title was released for the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube back in 2002. Of course, the new show is also the second Clone Wars TV show, because people love the prequel trilogy. In general, we hold much lower expectations for this game than the massively hyped The Force Unleashed, despite knowing nothing at all about it.

For one thing, it's going to look at best like the CG Clone Wars movie, and you can see from the image above how that's working out. In addition, The Force Unleashed has been in the works for years, and seems designed with gameplay at the forefront. This ... is going to be a licensed game.

Producer talks up Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

If you're anything like us, you've been watching the original Star Wars trilogy on loop for months now, even taking time to practice your lightsaber skillz in the comfort of your own home, all in preparation for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Not only will we need to be a harbinger of sorrow for countless waves of storm troopers, but also that of our friends, as the PvP looks to be one of the biggest draws for us.

The game's producer, Dan Wasson, recently conducted a video interview on the game. Sure, he talks up the inclusion of Vader, but also goes into detail regarding the Wii version specifically. This is good, considering most of the coverage the game has received has been in relation to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

[Thanks, Chris!]

PVP video unleashed for new Star Wars game

LucasArts producer Dan Wasson stopped by G4's X-Play show to demonstrate the Duel Mode and Wii controls for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed -- in an empty movie theatre, no less -- and, while it's no Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the game certainly has its charms.

Using the force, or unleashing it, as LucasArts suggests you do, to throw everything you can at your opponent while TIE fighters float around you is a scene we have no problem taking part in. All we need to know now is whether or not we'll still be able to play the game with the Wii Light Sword attachment to further immerse ourselves in the Star Wars Kid experience. Jump past the break for video from the preview!

NMS08: Joystiq hands-on with the future of Wii

Big-brother blog Joystiq's own Zack Stern got a little face time with some of the biggest games of your fanboy future at last week's Nintendo Media Summit, and mostly, the verdict is good, even in some surprising places. We've linked all of the hands-on impressions below, but will offer a quick recap here:
  • Rock Band for Wii is not quite a complete travesty; improvements made to the original Rock Bands are present here, and apparently, there is at least discussion of how to handle the online play/DLC problem, but whether or not that will be managed as a later add-on or reserved for a sequel was not said. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows ....
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is the opposite of Rock Band, however, in that it sounds even better than we expected. Zack spent some time in the Wii-specific multiplayer duel mode, and it sounds as though the level of depth (and sheer fun!) to be found there will make Wii owners and Star Wars fans very happy. We're looking forward to it!
  • BOOM BLOX may seem like a simple game, but while we're on the subject of depth, this is another title with a lot to explore and discover, and we know a lot of you are excited about it -- so much so that you'll challenge the bloggers to steel cage matches and all. It's cool. We like to know you care.
  • Samba de Amigo both is and ain't the original. It looks and feels like the Dreamcast game, but Wii remotes just aren't maracas. We did get our wish, though you can use two Wiimotes instead of a Wiimote and a nunchuk if you want, to get your samba on.
  • Wii Fit is fun, with a lot of enjoyable mini-games, but Zack felt they might get repetitive after a while. Then again, what exercise routine doesn't? That's why they call it a routine, amirite?

Wii Warm Up: Does being able to play as Vader sell you on The Force Unleashed?

You all probably know that we're already sold on the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed from LucasArts. Last night, it was revealed that the game will also feature an exclusive level where you control Darth Vader. This undoubtedly caused much excitement for some. Are you one of those people? Or could you care less about this game?

The Force gets unleashed on September 16th

Well, folks, we finally have a date for when the gates to a paradise of exploiting Force powers in a video game will open: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will release on September 16th in North America. Hot on the heels of yesterday's big reveal on the Wii version of the game, you can imagine we're pretty pumped for this. September? Can't get here soon enough.

But, wait, there's more. While those of us in North America are getting the game on September 16th, it will arrive in Southeast Asia and Australia on September 17th and release in Europe on September 19th. Pretty sweet, eh? For once, you don't have to wait a ridiculously long time for something.

Details unleashed for Wii version of The Force Unleashed

GamePro had some time to check out the Wii version of upcoming Lucasarts game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. During their time with it, they managed to sink their teeth into the robust PVP aspect (called Duel Mode, it allows for one-on-one combat between 27 different characters from the Star Wars universe) of the game, as well as provide details on how the motion controls will work. They even took time to compare the two versions of the game graphically, showing the difference in character detail and textures between them. But, who cares about graphics? The controls are where it's at, right?

Star Wars: The graphic novel unleashed

We love Star Wars as much as the next geek, so we found the news about a graphic novel of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to be only a good thing. It's set to come out this summer, which means it will be released before the game. We suppose if you're worried about spoilers, then you should probably avoid it for a while. If you want a heads-up on the storyline of the upcoming Wii title, though, the book will probably be useful. There will be a regular novel available, too, for those who prefer straight-up words; but, as you probably know, those are neither as nerdy nor as fun.

The novel is set to be written by Sean William, who's been on the best-seller list of the New York Times before, while the graphic novel will be the work of Haden Blackman.

As you might have guessed, the story involves something about the Jedi, Vader, and the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance. Sounds good to us.
