Miyamoto is your Time Person of the Year

We all made it happen. The man, the myth, the legend himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, has crushed the competition on the voting block and secured his rightful place at the top of the list for Time Person of the Year. Of course, this doesn't actually mean he's going to be on the cover of Time magazine, but it's good to know he's at the top of the list. If anything, this will mean that Stephen Colbert will make fun of him on his show (check past the break).

Good job, everyone. You've done your duty, soldier, now enjoy some much-needed R & R.

Miyamoto nominated again for Time 100

It's that time of year again, folks -- the point at which we implore you to help us shamelessly rig an internet poll so that Nintendo design guru and all-round hero Shigeru Miyamoto can climb as high as possible in Time magazine's list of the year's most influential people.

The Shigster is amongst 207 names to be shortlisted for the final Time 100, and currently lies in 25th spot, after coming ninth last year. At the time of writing he's sandwiched between Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (who, as a self-made billionaire of 24, we find eminently punchable) and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of the assassinated Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto.

On his profile page, the magazine mentions the usual Miyamoto achievements (Donkey Kong, Mario, father of modern videogaming, etc.), but also refers to Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit, and ponders whether the latter will help "reverse gravity for all the obese, video game–playing kids out there." If it does, we'd say that's worthy of a top five spot next year!

Wii Warm Up: Clocking time

It's been almost a year since the Nintendo debuted, and we've been faced with a number of games into which we might sink all our free time. But which one have you played the most? Twilight Princess? Metroid Prime 3? Perhaps even just Wii Sports? Maybe you have a particular thing for SSX Blur or the Godfather. No matter what it is, we want to know what's spent the most time in your Wii.

Virtually Overlooked Week: Jason's picks

You've seen it before.
Virtually Overlooked has taken over Wii Fanboy! All this week, members of the staff will be outlining their personal picks for future Virtual Console releases.

Growing up with gaming is an interesting thing these days. Many of you are part of the first generation that was quite literally born into a household with a gaming console, as I was. In my experience, if you start off in life gaming hard, you don't stop. Therefore, in the very near future, I will able to ask a random middle-aged man if he wants to go play Guitar Hero 4, and it won't be totally weird.

Who am I kidding? This isn't Japan, and that guy will probably think I am, in fact, totally weird. But man, screw those non-gamers. The hardcore, like you and I, have tons of gaming memories, and thus we frequently long for the games of yore to be released on the Virtual Console. But they have not yet appeased my feral hunger, and thus do I lay these games out in a commanding fashion for Nintendo's minions to take note.

You, of course, may gaze as well.

Miyamoto makes the print version of Time 100

We all knew that Shigeru Miyamoto would rank pretty highly on the online version of Time magazine's list of the most influential people; after all, it was people like us determining the rank.

What's surprising is that Miyamoto also appears in the print version of the Time list, which was not determined by Internet polling, but by Time magazine editors, who probably know a little more about who's influential in the world. This one isn't ranked hierarchically; the fact that Miyamoto is #92 out of 100 is only because he's categorized in the last section, "Builders and Titans." Put down your torches.

Strangely, the piece about Miyamoto is written by Johnathan "Fata1ty" Wendel, who, as a competitive PC gamer, seems pretty far removed from the fun-for-all Wii phenomenon. He's also possibly the first Time writer with a part-1337 name.

Miyamoto ends up at #9 on the Time 100

An expert team of historians and sociologists have finished their initial research, and have determined that Shigeru Miyamoto is the 9th most influential person of the year. We're totally kidding about the experts and the research-- it was just a web poll.

Rather than taking the time to go down the top 8 and make fun of them, we'll leave the baffling revelation of who made the cut as an exercise for you. You'll be surprised, and kind of confused! Maybe even a little disgusted!

Update: Shiggy is doing great in the Time 100

Behind Rain, who is a Korean pop star and Stephen Colbert, who is one of the funniest folks on television, Shigeru Miyamoto is currently holding down third place in the race for most influential people of the year, according to Time. We just felt a little reminder was in order, in case you missed our last post informing you of his presence in the race. So, if you haven't gone over there to help Shiggy out, we suggest you do so now.

Do it now, or else we'll cry.

[Thanks, Ben!]

Help Miyamoto get a nod from Time Magazine

Time magazine's website is running a feature right now where candidates are up for being included in the Time 100. What is the Time 100? Well, it's a who's-who list of influential and powerful people, a list that certainly demands to have one of, if not the most, influential game designers in the industry, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Lucky for him, you can have a say in who makes the list. All you have to do is follow the read link and give Mr. Miyamoto a rating. As of right now, he's got an average rating of 79, but we're sure that will come up. So, head on over and let your voice be heard.

First Disaster: Day of Crisis screenshot

Nintendo released a single screenshot of Monolith Soft's Disaster: Day of Crisis, the natural-disaster survival game announced at E3 2006. We now have our first indication of how the game will play-- that arrow suggests a Quick Timer Event. Whether that means an action/adventure game with occasional quick-button-press segments, or a Dragon's Lair-style game, we don't know. What is surprising even to us is that we're kind of hoping for the latter. We miss those laserdisc games! Are we the only ones?

Wii Warm Up: How much do you play?

Here's one we haven't discussed yet -- how often do you play? Are you truly hardcore, using gaming as a catch-all for all your hobbies and spare time, or do you work to fit it in amidst a busy schedule? How much time a person has to dedicate to gaming often influences the types of games they play. Do you find yourself playing minigames more than anything else, or do you have the time to dedicate to mastering every challenge you can find in Twilight Princess? Tell us all about it.

[We just love the clock.]

Wii Sports wins Game of the Year award in Time Magazine

Deserving?
Once again, Wii Sports is the media darling of the mainstream press. Time is as big as they come. But Game of the Year? Many of us may disagree. As hardened, totally awesome gamers, we've come to expect grand adventures, interesting characters, nail-biting action sequences, and wonderfully infuriating logic puzzles. (And if you were wondering, dear readers, our own game of the year award goes to Twilight Princess, naturally.) But totally awesome gamers do not run Time, and thus, we don't think they really care about such nonsense.

Still, stepping off our pedestal for a moment, Wii Sports has brought more new and lapsed gamers to the screen than any game since Super Mario Bros. Having fun with friends and family; is this not the point of gaming in general? It's an interesting question, and one akin to comparing Old School with American Beauty. One may have been an inspiring, cinematic masterpiece, but which did you have more fun watching? Which do you guys think deserves the award?
