New Mario Kart Wii tournament focuses on coin collecting in the Coconut Mall

Fans of those Mario Kart Wii tournaments that have been popping up, you'll be happy to know a new tournament will be taking place next month. Starting on July 1st, anybody who heads on over to the Coconut Mall and collects some coins (you have to play Coin Collector) will be entered in the new tourney. With Coconut Mall being one of our favorite tracks in Mario Kart Wii, we're anxious to check this one out.

Tallyho, guv'na -- UK Smash Showdown at Gamestation

If you like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and you happen to live in the UK, then this announcement might have some kind of connection with you. Twenty Gamestation stores across the nation will each be hosting a 64-person Super Smash Bros. Showdown on June 28. This is no slouchy, bored-marketing-guy tournament either. Every winner from every store will take home a 40" Samsung LCD TV and a Samsung Home Theater System, with all the DVD and surround sound trimmings.

Tournaments are great and all, but this one is really something else. The prizes are actually extremely good, and you only need to win six matches to take home the grand prize. Only one Fanboy blogger lives in the UK, but fortunately he is awful at Brawl. In fact, he doesn't even own the game. Or pants.

Register for your local tournament at the official website -- it's probably going to fill up fast, so make like a tree and hurry.

Nintendo brings families closer with Father's Day tourney

Click image to enter the gallery

Yesterday was Father's Day and there were so many ways to celebrate love for dad. One such way was to just spend time with dear dad playing games. If you're a father yourself, the same concept applies -- spend some time playing games with the kids. Though, if you're reading this, perhaps you've already done your fair share of getting the kids involved with your gaming habits. Anyway, Nintendo thought the idea was good and ran with it this Sunday by holding a Super Smash Brothers Brawl tourney for fathers and their children at the Nintendo World Store. We caught up with some of these father-son/daughter teams to see how gaming has played into their lives.

Paul and his son Samuel arrived at the tourney with a strong game plan. They set out to scout out the competition and "protect each other" when it came time to brawl. Paul himself is a longtime gamer: "I'm old school. Remember Space Invaders?" He's been playing with his son since the N64 days, and we suspect that's where that serious competitive edge comes from. Many other dads, like Larry, had never played games before or rarely did with their children. Larry's sons Jeffrey and Philip got him to go to today's event and try out a game for the first time. Interestingly, he liked it and even said he'd play more often with his kids from now on.

Out of the 32 teams, the most interesting story comes from tourney winners Dennis and his son Michael. "I'm a Zelda guy," said Dennis. The family plays games every weekend. "It's our thing. We play until we're tired." Like Paul's family, Dennis and his kids have been playing together since the N64 days, and like them, they too came with a strong game plan: "We're pretending to not know how to play," we were told. It's a strategy that worked, resulting in them beating out all other father-child duos. Dennis and Michael won themselves a Wii, a trophy, and a copy of Smash Bros. We guess that the family that plays together ... wins tournaments together. Fancy that.

Nintendads? Father-son Brawl tournament

Nothing shows Dad your life-long appreciation more than kicking his butt at Super Smash Bros. Brawl, further affirming to him that he is now a lost soul in a whole world of new technology. Well, that could be the case, but plenty of parents have proven their dedication to gaming in the past, so the chil'n may not have the upper hand.

Stroll on down to the Nintendo World store in New York City on Father's Day for an official Brawl tournament, where fathers and sons will engage in battle, bond lovingly, and question each other's sexuality upon choosing Peach or Zelda.

Save any household fussin' and feudin' for the tournament, as pent-up male rage is set to explode in an ocean of umbrellas, star wands and banana peels. Nintendo is awarding two Wii consoles, two copies of Brawl and a winner's trophy for whichever dynamic duo takes the tournament crown. All the action goes down from 1 - 4pm on Sunday, June 15.

New Mario Kart Wii tournament focuses on Toad

A new Mario Kart Wii tournament has been revealed on the game's Japanese website. And, as you've gathered from the title of this very post, the tourney will focus on Peach's little helper, Toad.

You can see, the track for the tournament will be Mushroom Gorge. Racers will need to go through the track backwards, as well as have selected Toad as their driver. For those of you who want to get their practice in, have at it. The date on this tournament says it will begin on June 15th.

What do you all think? Better than the last tournament?

Mario Kart Wii tournament provides sort-of-interesting new content

The first Mario Kart Wii tournaments were no big deal, offering pretty much the same kind of Mario Kart action you'd enjoy normally, but with more people involved. The latest tournament, which is available until the 9th, surprised us with a new level based on Super Mario Galaxy! It's ... a really boring track (in that it's just a disc), but Galaxy Colosseum is, at the very least, proof that there is still new content to be found in Mario Kart, probably on the game disc.

What's even more interesting is the task: defeating four of Galaxy's Topman enemies in a Boss Attack challenge -- a new gametype! If Nintendo keeps this up, Mario Kart Wii will have a long, healthy life online. If not, we'll just go back to being disappointed.

Got five minutes? Hudson announces Star Soldier R tournament

Star Soldier R's short-session, competitive gameplay is perfect for a tournament. Luckily for expert SSR players, Hudson agrees. They've just announced the Star Soldier R "Shoot Now, Win Prizes Later" Tournament & Sweepstakes.

All you have to do is sign up on the website, and then be as awesome as you can between today and June 24th in the game's five-minute mode. The top scorer will get Hudson's "Top 5 Wii Games" and a massive 16,000 Wii Point bonus. Wii Points will also be awarded to the 10th and 16th places -- in honor of "16shot" Takahashi Meijin.

A random drawing will also award prizes to ten players. That means that as long as you have Star Soldier R or don't mind entering tournaments for games you don't have, you could win! But if you do enter, why not go for the big prize? We're going to start practicing not being awful at shooters.

New Mario Kart tournament opens for Wii Wheel users

Fans of the Wii Wheel, take note: Nintendo has opened up yet another Mario Kart Wii tournament catering exclusively to you and your primary control scheme of choice. As you can see above, the tournament takes place on the GBA Battle Course 3 track, but you better hurry because this tournament ends on the 24th of this month.

So, who's getting down with this? Just another disappointing tourney to you?

A Crystal Brawl for a tournament winner

Daniel Jung probably already has a Wii, since he had enough interest in Super Smash Bros. Brawl to attend, and then win, a tournament. But he's about to have another one -- this time, with stuff glued to it.

As a prize for his victory in the New York City finals of Nintendo's Brawl tournament, Daniel will soon be awarded this crystal-bedazzled Wii, designed by CrystalIcing.com. It features Mario against a silver background on one side, and Bowser against a blue background on the other (picture after the break).

It was somebody's job to form the shape of Bowser out of Swarovski crystals and glue that shape onto the side of a Wii. That strikes us as pretty surreal -- although our job is to write about the act of gluing a Bowser-shaped constellation of crystals onto a Wii.

Brawlers throw down at the York, PA Gamestop

Well, folks, we've just returned from our local Gamestop's Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. The competition was fierce, but the general atmosphere was very light. Jokes were made, winners congratulated losers on their participation in epic battles and just about everyone agreed that this game is amazing.

For some pictures of participants enjoying the game and employees dressed as Wario, hit up our gallery below.

Canada gets its own Brawl tournaments

Oh, great! Another series of Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments -- even farther away from Texas! Even so, many of you will be happy about this: Nintendo is holding Brawl tournaments in Canadian EB Games stores, located in multiple stores in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Halifax.

Qualifying rounds will be held April 4th-6th, 11th-13th, and 18th-20th in each of these locations, followed by regional semi-finals. Nintendo will fly the finalists to Toronto for the final round and a shot at a trip for 2 to New York City (and the Nintendo World Store). It's a shame that these tournaments won't be pre-launch like the U.S. ones, but that just means more time to practice!

Play Brawl early and maybe win stuff

Nintendo is holding Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments in four locations across the U.S., giving American gamers their first chance to attempt the hilarious glitch ... or compete, or whatever. The first competition will be held in Los Angeles' Orpheum Theater this Saturday at 3 PM. They're only letting the first 256 people in, so bring your tramplin' shoes. Tournaments will also take place in San Francisco, Boston, and New York City on the following weekends, with the New York event also serving as a midnight launch party.

The participants in each tournament will receive $10 Best Buy gift cards, and the overall winner will receive "a custom-designed, crystal-covered Wii, a home theater system from Best Buy and other prizes." Check the press release at the link for specific dates and locations of each tournament, as well as descriptions of the prizes for runners-up. And ... prepare for Video Armageddon!

Have a pint and a go at Wii Sports

Now, if we were combining beverage time with Wii time, the product would probably be what you see to your right there. We have horrible coordination and the combination of alcohol into the mix would mean that we'd either spill our drink into our Wii or fall on it. That's just how we're built.

You folks in England, however, have a bit more in the alcoholic coordination department, as playing the Wii has become the new "it" activity in the pub. It has inspired Team Europe, a company who manages Poker tournaments in pubs, to start up a similar tournament across pubs for the Wii. And, you can even find some tournaments going on right now, on a regular basis in London, should you be the type of person who enjoys immediate action. In fact, one such pub hosts a Wii tournament every Wednesday and enjoys a lot of support from the 30 or so players that show up for the event.

This is just another example of the wonderful social aspect of the console, if you ask us.

Real bowler schooled by Wii bowler

Despite its look and feel, Wii Sports: Bowling isn't exactly a true-to-life game. Sure, it may feel like you have a sound style of delivery down, as you are awarded with numerous strikes during your career as a bowling champion on the Wii. But, it turns out that even experience does not govern performance in the game, as in the latest tournament at the 3000-resident Riderwood complex in Montgomery County, Maryland showed underdog Nancy Davies bested previous champ Hal Winters in a tournament with a score of 202 to 182.

Guitar Hero National Championships next year, world records on the line

By now, all you virtuoso Guitar Heroes (and from what we hear, there are quite a few of you) will have had a couple of weeks in the company of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. So, if you possess digits like these, and have a certain knack for the plastic axe, you may be interested to know that the first ever Guitar Hero National Championships are "just" six months away, giving you oodles of time to perfect those high kicks.

The event is being staged at the sixth TooManyGames conference on May 4th, 2008 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and will be presided over by video game world record keepers Twin Galaxies, meaning you'll have a chance to be immortalised in Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records.

It's best to weigh up the competition first though, so hit the break to watch the most irritating child of all time casually slaughter "Dead!" by Chemical Romance on Expert (occasionally turning his back to the screen), and then have the audacity to show us the Devil's Horns. The scamp.
