First4Figures' new toys feature pre-attitude Sonic

First4Figures, the company responsible for all of those extravagant Nintendo figurines, has turned their attention to classic Sega for their next release: a line based on Genesis-era Sonic the Hedgehog. The collection is designed to represent Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as they appeared back in the mid-'90s, before their extreme redesign -- before Knuckles started rapping.

For now, the set includes Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. The best part about this period in Sonic's life is that there aren't really any more ridiculous characters to base toys on. No Big the Cat, no Cream and Cheese, and certainly no Shadow. Maybe Robotnik and a couple of mechanical Sonics later, but this collection is safe from the sidekick parade that has ruined the series.

The approximately 5-inch-tall toys will be released around the summer, for a currently unspecified price. Don't be surprised if they're expensive -- this is First4Figures, after all!

We dream of preorder bonus figurines

We so wish we could get one of these NiGHTS figurines. The game may be about jumping through hoops, but there are just too many non-game-related hoops to go through before we could get this. We can't exactly go preorder a copy from a Japanese store, and we wouldn't be able to play it if we did, but ... look at the thing! It's so adorable.

This is apparently the first item in Pepper Shop's PaPETCH line of figurines, which means that we may see more game characters released in this simplistic, rounded style. And then we can report on not being able to get those as well!

Well, somehow the miracle of a NiGHTS sequel has happened; maybe if we bug Sega enough, we can get this or a bonus like it in the U.S.

A very different look at Wiis and projectors

This week's excellent Revolutionary explored the use of projection screens for playing Wii. This item from Yujin, on the other hand, uses a projector to allow you to look at pictures of characters who appear in Wii games.

The advantages are obvious: this projector fits on a keychain and comes in packages of eight for only $23. The only setback is that it doesn't do anything but project a single image of a Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, or Wario Ware character.

Also in today's NCSX shop update: cheap ($25.90) copies of Escape from Bug Island and Alien Syndrome. For use with actual televisions only, of course.

Devil Kings 2 .s toys

We're glad Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes (Devil Kings 2) is on the way for the Wii, because it means we get to show you these adorable dot.s sets of the characters. On September 28, Capcom will release pixel-mosaic sets featuring cuuuuute versions of videogame versions of real-life Japanese historical figures Chousokabe Morichika, Sanada Yukimura, and the pictured Date Masamune.

Each one will retail for 2,100 yen ($18.30). Given that we have no idea whether the game is headed for the US, we should look to importers like Play-Asia and NCSX for the vague possibility of acquiring these little guys.

Nintendo signs international merch deal

You know, for all of us who live outside the confines of Japan, real Nintendo merchandise is pretty scarce (or a horrible knock-off). All kinds of figurines, posters and the like are readily available in just about any shop in the country (we didn't check on the validity of such a claim, but leave us with our delusions). For us in the U.S. and other regions, we must either pay the hefty price of importing or live a bland, boring existence where we can only play Nintendo games and not live them in every aspect of our life. Oh, what a cruel world!

That is no more, though, as we're happy to announce Nintendo has teamed up with Corgi International Limited to provide us with a "multi-category range of products" until 2010. The goodies we will be able to purchase are extended to "Action Figures, Playset Environments, FX Electronic Products, Iconic Game Replicas, Multi Sized Plush, and Vinyl Figures." Personally, we can't wait until they make a life-sized Link pillow that we can hold tight while we sleep.

What? Don't act like you wouldn't!

Jack Thompson goes after Wendy's

The ever-antagonistic Jack Thompson is up to his usual business of publicly decrying anything remotely connected to video games. It doesn't get much more remote than Wendy's. According to GamePolitics, Jack sent an angry email to the CEO of the company about their association with the Wii.

As we know, Manhunt 2 will be released on the Wii. And as we also know, Wendy's has begun giving away promotional Wii-themed toys. It might be kind of hard to tell from the picture, but look closely and you'll see that the toys have nothing to do with Manhunt 2.

We may only be amateur logicians, but in addition to the inaccurate claim that the promotion of the Wii is an indirect endorsement of Manhunt 2, we think we see a hasty generalization here: one violent game doesn't mean that the entire set of Wii games (which contains the games promoted here) is violent, or that the Wii is a violent platform. Feel free to correct our analysis in the comments. We could always use more logic in our discussions of Mr. Thompson.

Wii toys served hot off the grill

Fast food chain Wendy's plans to pack its Kids' Meals with Wii-related toys soon. The new knickknacks don't look like they're anything to fawn over, but that miniaturized and muddied Excite Truck might make a nice addition to your collection of Micro Machines and Hot Wheels racers.

Truthfully, we've never been partial to the restaurant's square-shaped burger patties or its bland french fries. Wendy's chicken nuggets, however, are like the real-world equivalent to Narnia's turkish delight. Families have been betrayed and wars have been set into motion over these bits of meat. The fact that we can get a pocket-sized Wii remote with these nuggets pretty much settles our schedule for where we're eating lunch at when this promotion goes into effect.

Rumor: Another stash of Wiis coming to Toys R Us

... and another Matthew Lesko picture to summarize our feelings. Tipster HexiJosh was spot on about the last TRU Wii hoard, so we have no reason to disbelieve him now when he tells us that Sunday, March 18 is the day to queue up. Still, we're marking this as a rumor just to be safe.

He says that Toys R Us stores are getting even larger shipments this time than last time-- his store is getting a minimum of 12 systems-- and that TRU is planning to sell them bundled with Sonic and the Secret Rings. We hope these bundles don't cost full price-- bundling is only fun when there's a discount involved, and even then it's kind of annoying.

But complaining about bundles misses the point, which is HEY THERE ARE PROBABLY GOING TO BE SOME WIIS FOR SALE. Plan your next weekend accordingly!

[Thanks, HexiJosh!]

Get your Irish hands on the Wii next month

Irish gamers will get a chance to get their hands on the Wii next month at the annual Toys 4 Big Boys, which features home entertainment and electronics through a variety of third-party supporters. Nintendo falls in line as one, offering up demo stations for visitors during the show on November the 10th, 11th and 12th.

Any Irish readers planning on hitting Dublin for the event?

Another chance to pre-order a Wii?

If you're like some of us, then you're still out in the proverbial cold in regards to a Wii-orde ... no, no, it's not worth it.

In any case, some rumors are flyin' around the intertron, as they often do, and one of particular interest mentions that last bastion of childhood, Toys R' Us, taking Wii preorders on October 29th. Perhaps they'll have more than eleven units, but regardless, TRU representatives refuse to comment on such baseless grounds. The company's forthcoming "BigBook", full of awesome holiday-like sales, will spill the beans, so stay tuned for verification.

[Thanks, Matt Heff!]

Toys "R" us names Wii "hot toy"

Apparently, it's the first time that Toys "R" Us has ever nominated a video game system as one of its holiday "hot toys." We couldn't agree more; the Wii is at the top of our holiday shopping list. We know what you're thinking and no, we do not plan to blow all of our holiday gift money on a Wii for ourselves, we plan to blow all of our money on Wiis for everyone else. We're pretty sure our grandma will love it.

According to Toys "R" Us, the reason they came to the conclusion that the list needed Nintendo's console was due to it's incredible appeal across all ages. Toys "R" Us said "The Wii system appeals to young kids as well as adults," where the PS3 is "really geared to a savvy gaming enthusiast."

Progressive scan, 16:9 included in Downhill Jam

A rather excited fan of the site recently sent in an email correspondence with one Alex Ness of Toys For Bob, the developers behind Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. While this reader could've used the opportunity to pry loose release information for the console or exclusive content in the game, instead his main focus was whether or not the game would support progressive scan and include an option for 16:9 aspect ratio. According to the email, these are to be included:

"We're working on supporting progressive scan and widescreen right now and should definitely get it in before we ship."

So there you have it, word directly from Alex Ness at Toys For Bob that Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam will support 480p and 16:9. Our readers, they are the best!
