Nintendo registers mysterious trademark for 'Piktura'

Siliconera spotted an unidentified Japanese trademark application from Nintendo, registered in June. The trademark is for the title "Piktura." Of course, it could be absolutely anything, from some kind of EyeToy-style webcam to a WiiWare drawing app to some internal technology that consumers will never know about and which won't show up in Nintendo hardware for ten years.

But, as Siliconera pointed out, it starts with "Pik," and that makes it not entirely impossible that this trademark is Pikmin-related. Maybe it suggests generating Pikmin environments out of photos! The possibility of a connection to the Pikmin game that Miyamoto confirmed is infinitely more exciting than some random thing nobody knows about.

[Minor update: changed a weird joke to something less weird.]

Sega tags USPTO with Jet Set Radio trademark

Sega has already enjoyed a measure of success with two ports from its wonderful Dreamcast line-up, and now Jet Set Radio will join the likes of Shenmue on the "rumored" pile. A "Jet Grind Radio" trademark was filed over at the USPTO last week by Sega, while Kotaku heard whisperings at the ongoing Comic-Con 2008 festival that the trademark referred to a new Wii game.

Though we should emphasize the "whisperings" part of that last sentence, it's difficult not to get massively over-excited by the idea of a Jet Set Radio on Wii. The original game, now a breathtaking eight years old, exuded style and flair from every pore, with to-die-for cel-shaded visuals and a soundtrack that is played on the Wii Fanboy stereo to this day. We'd take a trip back to Shibuya-cho and Professor K any day of the week, and we'll do it with Wii MotionPlus compatibility, if you're reading this, Sega.

Wiimote triumphs over Weemote: A small business sob story

Sometimes, it really sucks to be the little guy (especially if the big guy you're up against is Nintendo). Take Forbis Technologies, for example, who came out with the Weemote (and trademarked the name in 2000) long before the Wii even launched.

Nintendo never officially refers to the Wii's controller as a Wiimote, and always calls it by the full name Wii Remote. Retailer and blog outlets such as ourselves are the cause of the problem, however, as we constantly use the unofficial nickname. Ever since the term "Wiimote" caught on, though, the Weemote's sales have "fallen considerably."

Nintendo working on an online magazine? [update]

[Update: the short answer is "Yes, they are!" However, it's the same web magazine they've had in Japan forever. Only the trademark registration is new.]

When it became clear that Nintendo's version of Nintendo Power was on the way out, there was a lot of speculation that the magazine would move online, bolstered Reggie Fils-Aime's idea of making Nintendo Power's archives becoming available on the Wii. Of course, instead of the print magazine being replaced by an online resource, it was replaced by ... an almost identical magazine.

Nintendo of Japan seems to have been inspired by the idea, however -- or by I Can Haz Cheezburger. They've registered a trademark for something called "Nintendo Online Magazine" or "N.O.M." Could this be a Wii-based magazine? The Nintendo Channel has already shown that Nintendo is willing to create exclusive video content for the Wii, along with demos. Words would be a natural next step.

New Square Enix trademark application could be Wii Ware Crystal Chronicles

Square Enix has filed two new trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for the titles Sigma Harmonics and My Life as a King. We have no idea what Sigma Harmonics could be, but it certainly doesn't seem to fit with any of Square Enix's Wii games -- it's probably not Chocobo's Dungeon, for example. But My Life as a King is a pretty good subtitle for the Wii Ware game known in Japan as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Young King and the Promised Land. We wouldn't mind the change: The Young King and the Promised Land is a mouthful, and a keyboardful as well.

Speaking of ... that game, there are some new screens at Famitsu, along with some more lovely concept art.

Nintendo registers new trademarks in Japan

Nintendo of Japan seems to have registered a few new trademarks, which makes for some interesting speculation for fans everywhere. Some are just plain strange (like Soma Bringer), while others seem pretty easy to figure out. Could the "Wii Body Controller" be the official name for the Wii Fit balance board? Mii Contest Channel is about as clear as Pikmin ... except we really want the latter and think the former is interesting, but not froth-worthy.

Here's the full list:
  • Mii Contest Channel
  • Nintendo Magic
  • Wii Body Controller
  • Mii Audition
  • Wii Handle
  • Pikmin (trademark protection renewed)
  • Soma Bringer
We can only assume that Nintendo Magic is the game of the same title that was announced for English-speaking gamers at E3, though that game was known as Magic Taizen in Japan. Does Nintendo make it a practice to trademark all title variations in all regions?

Nintendo snags more Wii-related trademarks

Nintendo sure loves registering trademarks. The latest bunch of trademarks snagged by House N has us all a bit perplexed as we can't quite figure out how they would serve the company and its upcoming console. The list reads:
  • WiiCan
  • WiiClub
  • WiiCommunication
  • WiiDiary
  • WiiHappy
  • WiiHealth
  • WiiHome
  • WiiKids
  • WiiMap
  • WiiOnline
  • WiiSenior
  • WiiWords
  • WWWii
Now, the only thing we can logically predict at this moment in time is that the term Wiican is Nintendo's entry in the Coca-Cola/Pepsi wars. We personally would've went with Ninten-Cola, but I guess it's a fine enough name. Or maybe Nintendo is trying to market the Wii to the Pagan game-playing crowd?
